I read this same take a lot, especially on this forum, unfortunately there is big push on thx based amps, based mainly on numbers. Lots of shilling among the more popular reviewers as well, its unfortunate since amps from Schiit,JDS Labs, and Geshelli, going with the trend of this forum, sound better than thx, though i cant personally verify this, but NUMEROUS members on this forum have stated likewise. Regardless, you are not the only one to feel this way about thx, and that number is growing. That being said the VC is pretty great and they scale well, even going to a Schiit Asgard3, JDS Labs El Amp, and Geshelli Erish or Archel can be a better experience than a thx amp. Though, awesome you have a nice setup, thx is better than nothing.
Problem is I sold the schitt stack thinking the 887 to be better and am not too happy the āupgradeā. Im interested with the new schitt Jot 2, but havent seen too many reviews on that yet
Your better off deciding what you want and what you want to spend before jumping on the next bandwagon amp.
What do you like about the amps youāve tried? and what would you like to get out of them?
The VC is a very good headphone, you can get a good experience from one with amps in the 500-1000 range, but theyāll continue to scale beyond that.
What DAC are you using.
And perhaps most importantly whatās your budget.
I have only really tried it with the heresy and the 887, tbh i did like the Hersey (warm, dark background and good amt of detail) but decided a 99usd amp not doing the VC justice so i went for the 887 after the rave resviews on thx amps but its just too bright for my taste. Dac wise I am only left with the Gustard A18, which I cant fault on as I used to use it on my hifi system in the living room and imo it sounded great, but i wanted a dac with streamer function hence its been since replaced.
budget wise, Iām flexible 500-1000 but i live abroad so will need factor in accessibility, do want to stick with SS amps tho
Looks stunning @Lalawilš
Yea Iāve been told THX isnāt the best fit for VC, very interesting with the price difference though
I canāt comment on VC closed but hybrid amps have really been a sweet spot for me with ZMF at this point. You may want to look at Liquid Plat or a piece of Schiit. I run Gungnir to Mjolnir 2 and every set of cans from ZMF (Ori, Eikons, Aeolus, VO, Auteurs- itās been a hell of a year buying and selling for me) sounded that touch sweeter than it than on the SP200 or Asgard or Erish.
The THX stuff I really havenāt cared for muchā¦super clean and bright, but my brain doesnāt always that most of the time and I find it starts to grind on me after 30min to 1hr of listening.
With pad and tube swapping you really can dial in what you want to hear AND its like having several sets of cans in one.
I too am abroad (EU) - Headfi usually has LPs and Mjolnirs roll up once or twice a month at a reasonable price.
I currently have the fostex TR-X00 with Ori ear pads and emu rosewood cups. I was curious about how the VC compares. I was wonder if anybody has listened to both or one of the other woods. I really enjoy the bass rumble of the X00 and worry that the VC lacks that. Iām curious about anybodyās opinions on the two.
VC will out class your fostex on a technical and resolving aspect. The fostex may have more sub bass rumble, but the VC wins in bass detail, but still has nice rumble. The width, depth, timbre, detail retrieval of the vc bests that fostex. If you super like your fostex and want to improve further, Iād suggest you get a th900 and Lawton mod it
I have ordered above headset ZMF Ltd November varite closed *rarely maple ambrosia. I want to transfer the order to some one who interested to buy. Please do contact me. The item will be ready for delivery in 4 weeks (expected)
This needs to go into the BST thread.
noted, need your help to transfer my order of ZMF,
What portable gear are you guys using?
Need to be very good as it will mainly be used for the office. Donāt see my self rocking the VC on the go, Iāll just use the Boose QC II or wireless IEM when in regular transit
For myself I used a woo wa8 eclipse and it was a pretty fun experience, although I would bypass the built in dac if you can with a nicer dap dac perhaps, I also used a dap to a phatlab phantasy ii that was a very nice combo. Generally they had worked well with most daps I had tried at the time, something like a questyle qpm worked pretty nicely among other options
Oh wow the woo wa8 eclipse is really good looking @M0Nš good thing I donāt need to be in the office yet, cause I need to wait for Feb salary to get this one haha Iām getting so broke starting up in this hobby
Itās a pretty great little transportable that is nice on a desk, itās not that long lasting for battery power (under 4 hours maybe) but if you just plug it in at a desk it works no problem, generally running 3 tube mode with the verite itās a warmer sweeter but still technically capable sound, thatās pretty well balanced, with 2 tube mode it gets a bit warmer thicker wetter sounding and upsets the balance a bit too much for me but some might like that. It also handles iems above like 16 ohms pretty well which was a bit surprising. Also noise floor is a non issue which is good
Abyss is working on a closed back as wellā¦ They have discussed multiple times they are āreadyā with exception of the guy with glasses is still working on the chassis. He said it should be anytime now so I would guess ~ March/April release.
Will be interesting to see if Abyss can take the crown from Verite as the best closed back.
I suspect the Abyss closed back will be significantly more expensive than VC.
Weāll see I would assume the $3k starting range with upgrade options from there. I will be more but I wouldnāt say it will be substantially more. Maybe it tops out at $4k with the upgraded packages (stand + cable + etcā¦).
I disagree with the VC being a low end step up to the X00 the X00 is the low end king. I love the VC but and itās detail is great and texture is immense but that X00 with those mods is pretty much end game like a VC itās just going at it from a different angle more relaxed.
Could you clarify more? Im not quite sure how my comment relates to what you are saying. Sorry for mis understanding. But I was answering the posters question about vc vs x00, and recommended he get a th900 and Lawton mod it if he was on the fence about a vc, since it will expand on his rumble liking of his x00, instead of losing out with a vc, but on a technical and dynamic level, he would, im assuming be happy with either one, as both are a noticeable step above the x00, especially with a th900 Lawton.
