AFUL Explorer 1DD+2BA Hybrid In-Ear Monitors

Need to be ready for colonoscopy for ears :joy:

I think we need to wait to see what they’ve done with so many BA drivers especially considering their 01 BA wonder Magic One was so good.

Fit is my only concern for now.

I usually don’t get too excited by marketing hype alone. I look at a company’s previous releases to see if they’ve been consistently good. If the new release also offers something innovative, then I start to get excited.

I don’t think the Doscinco is a higher-tiered version of the Explorer, per say. But, I have both and the Explorer feels like a baby Doscinco regarding bass and mids. Doscinco is way more spicy and fun, I use it only for music sessions and the Explorer for all day use at work.

Thanks! I’ll check it out.

Any idea about the pricing of Cantor ?
P8 is around 400 I guess , so it should be more.

That’s exactly why I went for the Explorer. Lower pinna is so good for longer sessions where fatigue can be an issue.

And the small shell, and the long and not so big nozzle, and soft cable… perfect for long hours.

Agreed. The Explorer is all about smooth sound, and has the most comfortable shell I have worn.

I always think the best comp on the Doscinco is the Tea 2, but with more air in the treble region. The Doscinco is a bit more V shaped, but the extra bass is offset by the extra treble, and the bass has more impact as a result.

My guess is that most people that like Explorer will also like Doscinco, but not because they similar tunings. Doscinco has way more treble by comparison. It is more about people that enjoy bass, and both are very good at delivering it.

I am assuming double of that.

super bummed im gonna be returning these, S’s and T’s even at low volume are just piercing, but im glad i tried them. Bass is satisfying but something with those certain peaks for me just dont work and at way lower volumes even. Tried Spinfits and Dunu SS’s, even Rinko’s. At least its one i can check off the list but man it scares me going off graphs now…
@domq422 i know you have this right, im not sure what to do from here, especially graph wise, S08 treble is almost perfect (non fatiguing) i just want a dope tribrid or something with techs, but louder listen for electronic but semi all arounder, feels like im looking for a unicorn

That’s both unfortunate and really surprising; I’d almost wonder if you got a bad unit(s) somehow? I don’t suppose you have a rig or means to measure them? If not I agree that returning them is the best bet but that just doesn’t sound like you were listening to an Explorer…
Regarding a Tribrid that matches your wants, it’s WAY more expensive than explorer or S08 but I think Prestige LTD would fit that bill. I haven’t had the chance to try them but the Oracle MkIII may also fit the bill at a more reasonable price.

trust me I’m super bummed after reading all the positive reviews for the price, and yes first thing i thought was bad unit, the BA’s sound grainy and super sharp for some reason ive used a BTR15, Muse M4 and my desktop THX DAC/AMP even at low volume and just piercing. Prestige LTD has been at the top of my list for so long i just wanted to try different sound sigs at lower cost to truly get my preferences right, feels like i should just take the plunge

I almost wondered if you have EQ turned on that’s emphasizing something that shouldn’t be, but if you’re using multiple sources that definitely eliminates that possibility. What other sets have you tried in the past that didn’t give you the same issues? Assuming that it’s not a bad unit, it may help if you can figure out which part of the FR is giving you that unpleasantness to ensure that you aren’t going to end up putting down vastly more money on something that still doesn’t mesh with your ears…

Im mostly planar iems, Timeless, S12, S08 and Hook, the only other hybrid i have is the Thieaudio Legacy 2, none of those bother me like this one did at volume, Hook occasionally, it could be im just super sensitive to BA timbre but i even compared graphs of my planars and they graph with way more treble

Jesus is Guy fast with the replies

But I have to agree, it doesn’t sound like you’re listening to a pair of Explorers, brother. But it could also just be your HRTF, man. It happens. It all depends on the fit and your ear canal’s shape. It could just be creating this weird resonance that’s emphasizing 4, 5, or 6k. Those areas usually are to blame when it comes to consonant harshness.

I’ve tried the S08 as well, and I mean, they were just fine for me, but I absolutely prefer the Explorers, and it came down to dynamics. The S08 sounded flat as a board. The tonality and timbre were fine—I may even say good—but the fact that the Explorers have that DD inside made the bass come off as way more punchy and hard-hitting regardless of what the graph says. That’s just my theory though.

no trust me i love the dynamics, thats why im looking for a non planar, i feel i have that covered now its just that thick bass dynamics and refined treble with techs that im missing now. Techno and most electronic as you know is really missing with planars so thats what im searching for. just wanted to check some at lower prices before commiting you know, thanks for the reply

I’ve got the Doscinco that sounds really good for Techno and hip hop.
Bassy balanced I would call it because it stays from being too muddy because of the pinna gain and the upper treble not being rolled off.

For tribrid the Thieaudio Origin got the thumbs up from HBB and he compared it to Prestige Ltd but cheaper.

There’s also the Fatfreq x HBB Deuce and an upcoming Ziigaat x HBB Arcadia.
