Yeah, the HD600 is insanely improved by a tube amp. I got into this hobby after picking up an amp for my HD6xx (essentially 650s) after running it from my pc headphone jack with no amp for 2 years and not seeing what all the fuss was about. Adding an amp changed everything. I wasn’t much of a fan to begin with, so I’m glad I can stop watching his videos. That’s just willful ignorance

I mean the 600 and 650 are famous for scaling with better amps lol. Not many people I know would argue against the 600/650 scaling

I don’t pay much attention to graphs for this reason. If your graph tells you the 6xx sounds identical from phone to amp and you don’t bother listening for yourself, then you’ll miss out on a lot of headphones. If I hear something that sounds really off to me, I’ll look at a graph to try to see what’s happening but that’s about it. If I relied on graphs alone, I’d own a lot of headphones I disliked, and would have missed out on many more I love

Yeah I pretty much don’t really focus on graphs or measurements at all, as imo it doesn’t really accurately poetry how a headphone will sound on your head (also kinda takes the enjoyment out of the hobby if you focus on measurements for me at least). I just take the headphone at face value

I don’t often EQ because I don’t have a preferred sound sig in the sense that I’m not treble sensitive, and don’t exclusively seek bass heavy cans because I listen to all types of music. I can see looking at graphs if you needed a specific FR for your taste, but I like the unique sound every headphone gives off for the most part, as long as it doesn’t completely eliminate part of the audible spectrum. I kind of wish I only liked one FR though, as I’d have saved a lot of money over the years if I did

^^^ X2 never EQ here…did mess with it but I came to the same conclusion…

:+1:

I really only eq for when I do studio work, and otherwise it’s pretty much just flat or a slight consistent bump in the bass

I really think most EQ’ers are frustrated studio guy’s in the wrong job? lmao

Well I would almost say eq for music production and mastering is necessarily lol, I just don’t like to eq headphones

Exactly :+1:…a studio has all the tech to provide a sound the artist and the production crew are happy with, if your headphones are disappointing then maybe your headphone choice if dodgy?

So I do eq to flat line for headphones when mastering, but that being said, I do that with some headphones and not others. I don’t do it to correct the headphone, just modify it so it’s more useful to me in that senario. I don’t have anything against people who eq, as it can be a great way to get a headphone sounding how you like it, I just personally don’t do it for music enjoyment

Should I go shoot myself or do I have to do it hara kiri? lol

I’m not a frustrated studio guy. I’m a frustrated classical musician. I just want a tuba to sound like a tuba and a flugelhorn to sound like a flugelhorn.

Well there’s a debate and a half (might need to start a new thread mate?) lol…What amp and what tubes?..can a tube amp replicate an ss studio mastered recording???

Well I personally use a decent amount of tube electronics in my mastering chain, if that means anything lol (as do alot of other engineers I know)

So why can’t #MaynardGK make ā€œa tuba to sound like a tuba and a flugelhorn to sound like a flugelhornā€?..

Honestly I am a bit confused lol, but I think GK is mainly saying he uses eq with his headphones to get it to sound correct for him and it’s just fine (at least that’s what I think)

Yep no argument here…I guess I don’t listen to stuff in a clinical studio environment…either live or through mostly ear driven devices…live wise a tuba, trumpet or sax will sound different in different in venues and environments imo…so who holds ace card when it comes to ā€œthat Soundā€ā€¦when we all enjoy the music, kit and hobby?

Well I mean I also can’t say a ton because I rarely master music for an artist, it’s more for business/commercial work, so I don’t have a ton of experience mastering something like an orchestra

Sorry to spark confusion but not clear what was confusing. Not aware of any non-DSP headphone with a sufficiently neutral FR for my needs. So far as I can tell the technology simply isn’t there yet. Since FR accuracy is important to me, I need to roll my own.

Yeah, and eq is a great way to do so if you feel the need to
