đŸ”¶ Audioquest NightHawk

Currently chilling in the office listening to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Nobody complaining yet! Probably forces me to be more responsible with my listening volume anyway. Loving the soundstage and separation that I’m getting with these compared to all my closed backs. The sound is definitely different when you first put them on, like you want to turn it up, but then you listen for a minute and it’s fine. The best words I have to describe the sound so far is “natural” and “smooth”. The detail is there in the songs it’s just super laid back. I now see why people have a hard time describing these. The bass is also nice, like you can really feel the vibrations of the driver sometimes. I left them playing all last night to help speed up the burn in process. Curious if I’ll be able to really tell a difference in a few weeks.

My friend who sits next to me at the office also likes good audio gear. I let him listen to these for 10 minutes. He asked how much they were, I told him, and he immediately went and purchased them.

Lol, recruit more into the nighthawk gang, we will become stronger :muscle:

Yeah! Nighthawk gang! You should invite him to here lol.

These must be just about the best bargain in audio at the clearance prices you can find them at. It’s a shame Audioquest pulled the plug on their headphone as they displayed a lot of clever and original thinking with these.

They did come out when the brighter “hifi” signature was popular, but now since the trends have shifted to favor enjoyment over technicality it would most likely do well in the market. But only if it were to be at like 300 ish

Although the KSC75 are imo the best bargain in audio if you like ‘bright’ headphones. Only $13 for HD650 tuning besides the bass. Not the same timbre, but still

Indeed, I think Audioquest tuned these for enjoyment and musicality. I think they are a good example of the importance of understanding use case when considering things. These would be a terrible headphone if you needed accuracy and detail for critical listening but they are a joy if you just want to relax and enjoy the music. On the other hand I have a pair of Adam SP5 headphones which I know Zeos hated but I actually find them to be excellent and very well made but cheap feeling headphones if I need to listen for details and need accuracy over smooth musicality (they are not a million miles from my Etymotic IEMs but brighter). I wouldn’t necessarily recommend the Adam headphones as they also seem controversial but they have a place.

Well I mean so are the nighthawks to some lol

Oh you have Etymotic IEMs? That’s cool.
True. Which honestly is why I am in this hobby. Whatever helps me enjoy the music in new and different ways that make me smile. And these do this the most for me.
I also honestly think they are okay for competitive gaming and really good for laid back gaming. I enjoy them a lot for movies especially.

I love my Etymotics, I commute by train and fly a lot and find the ER4 SR offers noise isolation at least as effective as active noise cancelling headphones with a much cleaner and accurate sound. Initially I did find them dry and boring but now I really appreciate their accurate and neutral sound. In a way the Nighthawk and SP5 are at opposite ends of a spectrum but I like both and with plenty in between. Some seem to look for the perfect tuning but I find that different sound profiles do different things and that it is not about “best” but what works for particular purposes.

These are a great deal right now because they were obviously engineered, built, and sold as a premium product. When my friend ventured a guess at original retail price he said $1,000 based on the overall presentation and feel of the product. Now that doesn’t mean anything if they don’t sound good, but these sound great! The premium materials and accessories are just the icing on the cake.

I mean they retailed at 700 USD so he wasn’t far off

They are really nicely made and one of the most comfortable headphones I have ever tried. They are quite the bargain for 200-250 USD.

I couldn’t stop listening to these today. Kept having to lean over and ask Mr_Makua (we’re coworkers) if I could borrow them for another few songs. The dark warmth greatly complements some of my favorite artists, Steven Wilson, Kings of Convenience, Fleetwood Mac.

I’m definitely looking forward to having a pair of my own in hand in a few days!

Lol, well glad to have you here, hope you enjoy them :+1:

Great to hear you like them! They are my favorite headphones. There’s something quite special about them.
Also, welcome! I hope you enjoy your stay here. Feel free to ask questions or if you need help with anything. There are a lot of friendly people here.

I’m wondering how similar the sound is with the nighthawks and the obravo cupids (IEMs). Seems both of them are notorious for having a weird yet lovable tuning.

I think the weird thing with the Cupid is the imaging. These do also have some interesting 3D like imaging to them in some ways.

Hmm. Interesting 3D imaging in what way?

My interest to the nighthawks / the cupids was definitive piqued. But I wonder what makes the nighthawks so cult following worthy.
