Mr. speakers/Dan Clark Audio Alpha pads work really well on the 770 imo. Not exactly cheap but might be cheaper than dekoni
nope those are expensive too.
I used brainwavz xl pleather with mine a lot when I had them. Donât quite recall all the sonic differences but it did increase the bass quite a bit and made tthe 770 pretty fun and extremely comfortable
True but those are quite a bit larger than the form fitting pads which is why I was thinking of getting an actual beyer pad or something more on the line of form fitting to the headphone.
I do have those perforated brainwavz here in XL size.
Yup fair enough, just thought they mightâve been the ones you were thinking of and theyâre pretty inexpensive as well. Good luck with your search.
My friend got these cans and he has them now and wanted an amp/dac to make things sound better for around $100, so I recommended the iFi Zen DAC. My thought was since he didnât like how bright they were I would have him use the bass boost button. Was that a good recommendation for these, or is there something better to reduce the treble? And also all he listens to is rap and hip hop.
Also a side note would it be worth for him to invest in the Dan Clark Alpha Pads?
EDIT: Big thing I forgot to add is he has the 80 OHM version
That bass boost will distort the hell out of the dt 770 on some songs or make it very muddy lol. It does roll the treble a little though as an amp so I think your alright as a good budget option. Wouldâve just gone with the fiio e10k since its only 80 ohm if I wanted to get a budget gift honestly⊠either way though works fine. If he wants more roll off he can get something like a liquid spark, or just keep the zen dac and grab the zen can later for the extra 3d mode[its not virtual surround] and extra power
My impressions coming from nothing to DT 770 80 ohm. About a year later
So I run these with a fiio A3. It does the job nicely but it seems like it would scale better with something more powerful.
Generally I wish I had gone for the 250ohm since it seems to be considered more refined.
The build is very nice and I couldnât ask for more at this price. Or maybe I could ask for a detachable cable.
Weirdly at first I found these very uncomfortable, out of the box they have a very tight clamp force. Over time and with a little bending itâs better. Still not ideal for my head.
Sound
After the initial getting used to/burn in period I started to really like these. What surprised me most is how they can actually âpaintâ a soundstage and how they can place sounds in it. Itâs not insanely big or anything but it extends form the center of your head all the way to about 10-15 cm from your ear outwards.
There is also some small verticality to the soundstage as well and an even smaller depth.
Imaging in music is decent you can really tell all the different places sounds come from. In gaming tho it does not seem that accurate.
Instruments are well separated.
Overall a very pleasant and impressive experience.
Bass goes very deep and is of high quality. You can hear different details here that I didnât expect from my past listening experiences with worse gear. You can really feel the thump, overall very pleasant bass in both quality and quantity.
I find my self using EQ sometimes to try different levels of sub-bass. It is really fun since it doesnât distort easily and for example you can have that exaggerated cinema like sub bass sound for movies.
Vocals appear very clear and detailed. Most of the time they are as present as I need them but on a few occasions I have felt like they are distant. I guess it depends on the audio played. In acoustic songs for example vocals will be close and centered usually just as you would expect them.
The highs⊠Okay so here lies a very strong feature of the headphone but also here lies its greatest weakness. In my opinion the treble sounds very nice, it packs a ton of detail. It puts a texture on the sound that I really like. Yes the sound is brightâŠ
The big weakness of the treble though is that it gets sibilant very very easily. Also a few sounds can get to the point of being sharp occasionally. These two bad characteristics can be brought to light extremely fast with a bad quality song/recording. But can also be hidden with a very good quality one.
In my opinion there is not getting away without EQ here. The problem is that as much as you try this headphone will never lose its sibilant nature. You can get it to a very good point tho if you decrease the peaks that you will find in the frequency response graphs for this headphone.
After EQ the sound keeps the high detail aspect but doesnât get sharp and will only rarely get sibilant in music. I still find sibilance in some (not all) youtube videos where people talk. Maybe I just didnât do the best job EQing. Maybe this can get better with a good amp.
To conclude this sounds like a v shaped but towards neutral headphone. Especially if you EQ the treble peaks. Very detailed but also very enjoyable. Boosting sub-bass with EQ can turn it into a total silly fun ear massaging type of device.
Overall I still enjoy using these daily for literally everything. A very good package and well worth the price. Really changed my listening experience. Next in sights: DT1990âŠ
Yeah I agree, these cans are great. I have the 250 ohms running off of a good amp and I believe they sound 93% as good as the 1990 on my setup.
I know Iâm supper late on this, but if itâs still relevant to you these are great and fairly cheep leather pads and there is a fenestrated version as well.
Those have more of the oval shape on the opening but they have some amazing reviews. I havenât heard of the company but to see them compared to ZMF like spot on quality wise is impressive. Not particularly what I am looking for though as I would prefer the more fully circular kind of pad. I ended up getting the choice leathers from dekoni for like $25
Sadly they are not QUITE as good as real ZMF pads but are still more than worth it. Iâve used them on my 770s and quite liked them. The non-fenestrated didnât change the sound much accept for a bit more mid-bass and warmth, but only a bit.
My current preferred pad for my 770s are the dekoni X00 sheepskin pads since they almost make the 770s sound like a baby X00. Adds a fair amount of warmth in the lower mids and tames the treble rather well, though there is still some sibilance distortion but itâs not as piercing as stock pads. Not as comfortable as the pads I linked since the ear hole is smaller bit they are still good for me and I really like how they sound.
Didnât think the X00 pads would actually fit. Will have to give them a shot at some point
IIRC I had Brainwavz XL pads on my old 770âs not sure if they do full leather though
Just got some fostex th900 fenestrated sheepskin pads from dekoni for a cheap price and they sound great on the dt770. Mids no longer as recessed, highs arnt as sibilant(ymmv) as they could be and the bass is nice and present but not overwelming or boomy. sounds real smooth. This takes the dt770 600 ohm out of retirement for me. Hmm probably not listening to hip hop as much with these.
Oh awesome, a 600ohm version out in the wild! Looks interesting with the pads too, thanks for your input.
Haha I only learned these were discontinued last year. Had no clue that they werenât for sale anymore in this variant. Iâve been going mobile with these up until then. These are now a home set with these pads. I would guess its sundara like from zâs pad review.
Edit- well I had to bring them out while running errands and ooh itâs like I have new headphones paired with my xd-05.
huh, I might need to get those⊠those look really nice⊠wonder how they compare to the regular beyer fenestrateds⊠They look a bit thinner than what you get for the beyers from Dekoni
The red are the brainwavz and black are the dekoni.
The dekoni th900 pads do have an angle to them. They are as thick as the regular brainwavz fenestrated. Dekoni has a slightly bigger ear hole compared to the red pads.
The brainwavz fenestrated sound softer in sound compared to the dekoni th900 pads. Less sub bass presence compared to the dekoni. Itâs still there but just softer. The dekoni sub bass is more noticably compared to the brainwavz.
Both pads brought the mids forward and made the highs seem less sharp to my ears. Bright, smooth, and forward sounding is what Iâd say they sound like. Dekoni pads with a bit more sub bass presence.
This has me a bit curious nowâŠ
So, the T1 2nd gen has curved drivers and I have been searching all over for a nice curved pad that fits⊠the fostex here will fit them and they are curved⊠aaand dekoni⊠aaand good quality⊠think you may hve just solved my search with this one⊠The regular beyer dekoni elite velours are quite a bit thicker than I would like but the fostex variant are thinner and angled to boot which may be exactly what I have been searching for, well⊠I have been looking for about a month now. I may need to get a pair of these fenestrateds and the velour to go with my T1.2 and hybrids if they got them⊠if that all works hell, I will sell the 1990 off and switch to just use these fostex pads on my T1
I did look into zmf pads but they are so damn expensive⊠I would rather not go that route honestly
