šŸ”· Beyerdynamic DT770

I completely agree, the 600 ohm 770 ā€œEditionā€ circa 2005 is an exceptionally different sound, much more refined and also extremely rare to find now. Note that there is also an older 600 ohm version from the 80s. From what Iā€™ve heard, itā€™s missing the bass port that the newer 2005 one has, and lacks bass because of that.

Iā€™ve owned my 600 ohm 770 since 2013, these were my first set of HiFi cans. I bought them used and I didnā€™t realize what I had then. After buying my first tube amp, Little Dot MKIII, I still felt like these were just OK cans. I moved on to the DT 990 / 250 and then other models and brands of headphones. I had even foolishly tried to sell these a few years back thinking they werenā€™t a big deal.

It wasnā€™t until I started on my vintage amp journey last year (thanks @JDM_WAAAT) that I realized these are the best cans Iā€™ve owned, past and present. They just need more power than youā€™d ever expect. Once properly driven, the presence finally compliments the unbelievable soundstage for a closed can. The instrument separation and detail is remarkable, the mids are present like the 880, bass is tight, extended, and detailed, and (despite what JDM says) the treble isnā€™t nearly as sharp and piercing as any of the other 770 models. In fact I donā€™t find it to be sharp at all, but some may. After realizing all of this, if I ever ran across another set of these, I would not hesitate to buy them.

Iā€™ve been daily driving these for about a year now, and I still love them!

TL;DR - 770 / 600 (2005) is the best of the 770s (and the best of the entire 770/880/990 trio imo), but only when given a lot of power. If you like the Beyerdynamic house sound, these are it.

Slapped some amiron/tygr filters into the dt770 600 ohm and threw it on and compared them to my dt770 250 ohm on the ares II and Lake people RS-08.

Initial impressions,
The filters cut back the possible sibilant highs. Much easier to listen to for long periods compared to the stock tuning but ymmv. There is an added warmth to the sound and the vocals lose that bright and thin presentation replaced with thicker mids that donā€™t sound as recessed compared to stock but still recessed. Bass gets a boost and sounds thicker and slams a little harder with a little more rumble.

I would say this is how I wanted the dt770ā€™s to sound like when I bought them back in the day. Big improvement imo if the stock tuning is a bit too bright and lean sounding for the listener.
Adds warmth, cuts sibilance, mids are less recessed, vocals have weight and thickness compared to stock and maybe a little more width to the soundstage but loss of depth. Sounds forward, warm, and less v shaped.

These on the bottlehead crack really smooths out the vocals a little more, adds body, and thickness. I enjoy these with the amiron/tygr filters more than stock on the tube amp. Stock dt770ā€™s on the crack were a bit too aggressive but the filters solved that and now I enjoy the dt770ā€™s a lot more on crack now.

Further listening with the dt770 with the tygr foam disc filter, mids were still a bit thin and not very smooth.

Ive found switching the pads to dekoni sheepskins have gotten these closer to a pair I could enjoy more.

The sheepskins seem to smooth the sound out a bit. I like the dt770s with sheepskins without the disc filter so im glad they still help out.

Sometimes it feels like, im just polishing a turd. But I like this turd and ill keep the polishing rag out a little bit longer to play around.

Thatā€™s exactly what I experienced when trying it out, too. The filter fixed the sibilance, which somehow bothered me the most of all beyers Iā€™ve owned, but the mids were just not there.

I just canā€™t handle the DT770s various dips and spikes without EQ. I ended up with my dt770s with dekoni hybrids using oratoryā€™s eq for that combo, its the blend of comfort and sound I found I can live with and enjoy.

Exactly what I was looking for as well when doing all adjustments to the 770s.

Out of all the beyers the 770s hurt me the most with the sibilance as well. The 990s come in second.

Ive had the 770s for so long. Im just glad i can get more life out of these after so many years of listening to them stock.

Any watermelon headed baldies out there with these cans? These are the only closed backs I have at the moment and the pleather/whatever creates a hot spot on the top of my head that is nearly as irritating as the treble spike, except I canā€™t fix headband fatigue in EQ.

Iā€™ve thought about scooping a V out some of the foam from the middle of the band to relieve some pressure or folding/cutting an old stocking cap into a yarmulke type thing, but both of those seem like kinda silly ideas. Iā€™m not a fan of springing for Dekoni nuggets on 'phones that are about to be relegated to backup duty.

Maybe try one of those knitted headband covers for them ?

Something like this? This looks super comfy, easily reusable and not excessively goofy lookin. Thanks!

Jopp just what I meant  others also had success with Velcroing a replacement hd 650 headband foam onto a headband

Oofā€¦ I donā€™t think itā€™d fit my big ass head like that. Iā€™ve bent em to where itā€™s 90% clamp holding them on my ears, which is super comfy with Dekoni pads. I wouldnā€™t recommend it with stock.

Iā€™m tempted to get the 6xx/650 band for my 600s though. Unfortunately thatā€™d look reasonable instead of hilarious

Threw my T1.2 pads on these and wow, not only do they look awesome but theyā€™re incredibly comfortable and sound fā€™ing amazing

I listened to these infamous babies today after a long long time. Had to share my thoughtsā€¦ Iā€™ve been using my Sundaras for a while.

So at first I was pretty disapointed. Weird timbre, harsh, grainy, bad bass, aggressive.

But after a little while I remembered all the really good qualities these headphones have. They are IMO not a headphone to have as your main one as they have no chill. They are not great for every genre either.

But if you play a song they like they will reward you handsomely. Ive found this mainly with acoustic stuff.

The treble can get very enjoyably sparkly with lots of satisfying details everywhere. Imaging is just super good. Most impressive of all is the sound-stage, very good and expansive with great separation.

Itā€™s just a killer combo with the imaging.

But ofcourse its very aggressive with the details and the vocals just forget about them unless we are talking high pitch.

The bass I just canā€™t enjoy it after listening to Sundaras for a while.

Also even the 80ohm ones are very power hungry.

One small detail I really like on this 2022 DT770, there is this tiny little notch that makes its super easy to swap out the padsā€¦

You can see how easy it is on this video by UK custom cans:

Is it just me, or is there very little coverage/interest about the DT 770 Pro X Limited Edition? I know it just came out, but I was expecting supply to disappear quickly due to the popularity of the DT 770 Pro. We know that headphones were sent to reviewers ahead of the releaseā€¦ I guess I thought thereā€™d be more interest.
