šŸ”¶ Beyerdynamic DT880 600Ī©

that sounds interesting thank you. the 6xx vocals do stand out a lot and i feel it over takes the details in a song so maybe thats where im coming from. So im using a tungsol for the front and a sylvania for the back

Ok, Iā€™m running Sylvanias in both spots with a VT-231 as the driver. I see what you mean by detail now. To my ear thatā€™s not a tube problem. I think the 6xx mids can get overwhelmed sometimes and break mid timbre. It doesnā€™t happen often but there are tracks where there is more going on than the 6xx can handle. Iā€™ve never noticed this with the 880, though.

Wanted to chime in on here since I ran a test since last friday. I was wondering what is up with the black edition vs this edition 600 ohm. Noticing there was a 600ohm that popped up in black as well but not labeled ā€œlimited editonā€ ordered that and the 250ohm special edition black for some comparisons. The black 600 ohm sounds just like the edition 600 ohm just ever so slightly warmer and not as bright, going to assume this is the pads as this is exactly what happens when you switch off silver pads to those black pads. As for the 250 ohm special edition black that is most definitely a very different tuningā€¦ I sat down and tried changing them to the silver pads and it was still different. Itā€™s like a mix between the 880 and 990 somewhere in the middle which is honestly weird. Black edition seems to loosen up the bass and it doesnā€™t sound very well extended but it is definitely more elevated with potentially a touch more body mids sound warm now and sounds like the trade off was some clarity and the treble now also has a warm tone to it with an obvious difference as it doesnā€™t have that very blatantly obvious peaking treble sound to it anymore. Like a more Fun version to the edition perhaps? How odd, I wonder why beyer tuned this differently perhaps people thought the 880 was a bit too analytical or something. It sounds very similar to my tygrs but with more treble, though granted tygrs have more body and sub bass

Since i got my 880s today i gave them a bit of listening time. No full conclusion now, but i think they are pretty amazing, especially for the 120ā‚¬ i paid for them new.
At first i noticed a treble peak that pierced my ear a bit. A few hours later, im still listening and the piercing sound is gone. I mean, its not gone, but my brain has adjusted to it i guess.
I can run them off my Magni 2 or my Darkvoice. While the Magni is really not bad, i like it much more on tube. It gives everything a bit more body i would say. Definetly a lil bit more low end and probably the tubes are smoothing the treble a bit.
I have tried the 770 and the 880 Pro 250 in the past. Ah and the MMX300, which i sent back immediatly (not a fan of closed).
This one is definetly the first beyer i really like. i guess way more listening experience than 2 years ago has something to do with it.
I have the ā€œeditionā€, not the pros and the clamp is ok this time. The other beyers were a bit too tight.
Its a very pleasing experience listening to them
Im very happy with my purchase. My desire to try new things is a bit more satisfyed now  :joy:

Itā€™s a sweet headphone! IMO, itā€™s at least a must try for anyone starting to explore audiophilia.

Agree with you. Have to try other tubes with it. My darkvoice humming is gone again, thats its a good side effect of having something new for the darkvoice

Definitely one of the better neutral-bright headphones and great for itā€™s price tag. Glad your enjoying it

What headphones were you using where you noticed the DV hum? I donā€™t hear a hum on my DT880 but do on my 6XX. I might get around to doing a Fitz mod here at some point.

Thereā€™s a guy on Head fi selling a 880 modded with a 4 pin xlr connector for balanced support. Might be good option for someone who doesnā€™t the hassle of modding them yourself.

Iā€™ve had my eyes on the DT880s for a bit. After Zeoā€™s review I thought that thereā€™s no chance of them going on special in the near future and pulled the trigger on my purchase.

I have a Fiio K5 Pro and on high gain with foobar at -10db with the volume knob at 1 oā€™clock with heaps of loudness. Iā€™m currently watching Paul Mcgowan on Youtube at medium gain at 11 oā€™clock.

To be honest, Iā€™m still pretty new to this but Iā€™m having trouble figuring out where to put my ear inside the cup. Then again I only have some SHPs to compare them to.

With my 6XX and yesterday I had it in the beginning with the 880 too. It was a lot more quiet on the 880. Yesterday evening the hum was gone, but I had this in the past and it came back.
Have an 6sn7gtb tung sol (new version) in it at the moment and this one has the most hum. My other old GTB doesnt do it and the standart tube a lil bit. I have another one on the way, I will see how it is with this one than.
But yeah, I guess I have to do the Fitz Mod aswell till I get a crack.

Ive been looking at a lot of single ended amps for this headphone. ive also got the 600ohm dt900 and the 250ohm 770ā€™s. Ive checked the Magniā€™s, Liquid platinum. Atom. El amps. Topping amps. SMSL amps. Aune. Drop and Monoprice THX amps. Geshelli, i actually had to send him an email and he said his amps are 215mW to 240mW. still under the Asgard at 300 for 600ohm.

So these headphones being single ended really limits them. most headphone amp manufacturers put the power into balanced amps not so much single ended. most come out to 100mW for 600ohm or lower. So unless you want to Mod this headphone (which i dont care to do) or get a BIG speaker amp (ie Emotiva a100, which is still unavailable) and mod the headphone port or get into more expensive amps. it looks like the Asgard is the best amp for these 600ohm headphones.

Next step up would be the 500$ amps i think. Unfortunately the RNHP and Gilmore amps dont have much power output for 600ohm. But a really nice headphone amp for this at 480$ is the Lake People G111. it comes in at 600mW for 600ohm, twice the power of the Asgard!

I agree with this. On top of not being able to run them balanced out-of-the-box, the stock attached cable is a pain in the ass generally.

I agree. I know it is 500 but the Lyr 3 is pretty great with them.

@Antpage2 Is that two 1/4 inch jacks on the front of the Lake People?

yes i believe so. not sure. ive always been curious as to why theres 2

They do that a lot. Reason being there is rarely just one person listening to the mix in a studio.

Interesting, i guess its more a pro studio amp. I wonder if it was made for headphones like the 880. since their for pro studio use also. thats a lot of power going into 600 ohm

My chord hugo TT2 has 2 jacks for the same reason

It would be cool if there was an option to flip a switch to make the 2 outputs a L/R balanced output. A man can dream.
