Thank you Wave and Falenkor for the warm welcoming , i love your explanations and after reading them my concerns are relieved and now Iām so excited to dive in for this cans with the said amp/dac and be prepared to be amazed lol Wave , i have been highly encouraged by your statement Falnekor that [ you would absolutely argue the asgard 3 sounds a hell of a lot better than that Emotiva amp] this has removed the confusion i got from watching that video and give hope to someone like me who is on low budget
I understand now the sky is limit for the scaling of this headphone ( may be this is little over exaggerated expression lol ) . You both have highlighted that this headphone may have the signature that i may not like , to be honest i do not know what signature i like ( embarrassing , right ? i have no reference to judge and it is hard to test headphone and speakers live , the audio stores in my country are not that great , i have to order them online , i live in Africa , this will not stop me to start my journey which Iām afraid to be addict to LOL .
One more question Guys what dac do you prefer to go with asgard 3 among the the three (magni 3, e30 or Zen DAC) ?
Thank a lot guys and please forgive my bad English
Sorry falenkor , I just I understood what you mean by [if you are treble intolerant this can lead to some issues I would recommend testing this through speakers ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦] , I have Jamo S 308 hooked up to Yamaha AV receiver ( rx āA880), I will go and read the manual and know how to tune the treble up
Iād say e30 or zen. Not a fan of modiā¦ though asgard may be quite expensive for youā¦ may need to consider alternatives like Lake People for your amp to shave some costs.
Yeah, some people have issues with treble, leading to fatigue, discomfort, or even headaches. Highly recommend you check into that first, or find a way to test the beyer headphone before purchase if possible
I like the option of Zenās bass boost. Itās done well, and the A3 and DT880 both handle it well. IMO itās, nice to add that extra low end to the 880 sometimes for bassier music. The Zen is a bit quirky at times though and has only usb input. The E30 is a really good bang for the buck dac that has a neutral sound, 3 inputs, and a few subtle EQ features. I havenāt heard the Modi 3+ but know that Schiit has been killing it with their dacs recently.
Iāll add in here that this thread is long but probably more than half of it is peopleās confusion about the power required thanks to Zeos. Consider DMS take on it, imo he was much closer to what you can expect about the stock performance.
After my own experience with this headphones , it being the one I sit at my desk and listen to , itās a great headphone once you pair it right. I never once regretted paying 400usd for the Asgard 3 lmao! I am treble sensitive and tbh this pairing mostly never bothers me. Imo the 880ās presents the recording as is. I say this because some tracks do get sibilant also most tracks seem less bassy but then there are tracks where I donāt get any feeling of lack in the bass and the highs are nice and crisp but not piercing at all. So I wonāt say itās the fault of the 880.
I say, be patient, save up a bit more and get the better electronics recommend by the guys, you wonāt be disappointed IMHO.
I love my pairing and listen to it whenever I can. I got the su-8 dac, A3 and dt880 600 ohm. I will add a loki in time but Iām in no hurry for it.
Hi Wave
Great , i will go with zen , is the usb power is good enough ? or I really do need the iFi iPower adapter (49$ ) ? can i go with aftermarket one and do not lose sound quality ?
Hi Falenkor
as you know i will be use Dt880 also for competitive gaming too , i have read that the dt880 has an issue depicting sound in 5 and 7 oāclock position , is this something i should worry about ?
what lake people model are you referring to (https://www.thomann.de/gb/lake_people_g105_headphone_amp.htm), i see the Asgrd 3 non-module is cheaper , please correct me if Iām wrong , may be Iām choosing the wrong one (Schiit Audio: Audio Products Designed and Built in California)
Thank a lot Timmeh, iām glad to hear your feedback too , it is encouging
I got by with it on a desktop computer that has an enormous PSU already. But itās not a bad idea give it its own power. The issue with USB power is that it can be inconsistent and that can affect the performance. An external power supply will help smooth that out.
No. IIRC iFi puts a very short USB-A to 5V DC adapter cable in the box (itās been a minute since I got mine so that could have changed). The power it wants is 5V and the iPower tops out at 2.5 A. Thatās the same power you get from a quick-charge cell phone charging brick. Such a brick and a usb extension cable to get the length you need should do fine.
Thatās behind you positioningā¦ no offense to who said this but noā¦ this is not an issue it just takes practice to realize the sound is behind you just like if its above or below.
G103. If asgard cheaper go asgard
usb powered plug for the amp but yea I donāt really think itās necessary to buy the power supply
Running my DT880ās through a pretty affordable amp tonight. It is a Little Dot MKIII. They take most of its power to run. My chain is:
BF2 to Schiit Loki to LD MKIII 3 to my 'phones. Even with the volume boost from the Loki, the dial is around 1:00, and with old music (60ās and 70ās), it is more like 3:00-3:30.
Sounds pretty good though.

i guess this will be my final question lol , about this matter specifically, is this applied to other headphone like dt990 ? or dt990 is more easier and more accurate to depict the sound from rear , above and below ?
thank a lot wave , i understand now
Due to the nature of open back you have an airier stage and a bigger one at that. 990 will be better at these kinds of placements but only due to the differences of open vs semi. As far as signature goes 880 doesnāt have a bass problem and can be a more enjoyable listening headphone as itās not so peaky
Would like to ask is the little dot mkii a recommended otl tube amplifier to pair with this, would like to buy a dv however the price difference in my country is about 2x of a little dot mkii. Currently running with the topping stack (which i know would be the bottom of the scale/bare minimum for the dt 880 600 ohm)
Edit: i am not knowledgeable on otl tube amplifier so pardon my mistake or tube amplifier in any regards, i am just a budding audio enthusiast trying to stem out
I say go for it. I donāt think the mk2 is technically a āotlā amp, but it has a nice smooth tubey sound with the 880 600 ohm, at least on high impedance jumper settings. The DV has more tube swapping options and probably a more robust sound overall, but the little dot is no slouch as a pairing for any high impedance dynamic, in my opinion, beating even the Asgard 3 for these particular headphones.
Considering to get a used pair, i currently have a jds atom stack, topping a50s and a little dot mkii, enough bois to feed them?
how does this compare to my stax L300 as well?
Yes. You have some upside potential, but an atom will get them loud enough.
Hope youāre into brightness a bit. EQ would be a good thing to utilize.
You have an OTL tube, and you can get a used pair for savings, hell yeah. You should try.
Canāt help on the Stax comparo.
thanks, im not sure if i need a dt880 600 ohm
