šŸ”¶ Beyerdynamic DT990 600Ī©

yes i think you should try the loki, the only thing that bothers me is the lack of Q but hey they made it specifically for audio so its worth a shotā€¦i was more into the Erish and Enog for desk space and his gushing, bummer, also like the design/form factor of JDS but i told myself sound first, too much to taste man

That all? oh yeah then your good. Those tygrā€™s sub bass are just what you expect from beyers and is the one thing I noticed as soon as I put them on that floored me as it has one of the best bass in itā€™s price bracket of beyers.

While I do feel it will help with the low end and mids I donā€™t feel it will fully dial back that treble enough for some peoples tastes this is completely preference to the person and I donā€™t have enough experience to really comment on this yet, one of the reasons I am considering getting a tube amp like this. I have auditoned practically beyers entire lineup even that infamous T90, which to be fairā€¦ extremely sharp and is on a whole other level in comparison to the 990s however itā€™s actually fixable so not bad but not even close to something I would recommend like ever lol.

I swear by this headphone as an audiophile, as a casual listener, as a gamerā€¦ (I will say that this headphone is practically cheating in fps competitives with analytical pads) Theres a reason I barily use the 990s and this is it. This headphone and itā€™s two cousins are phenomenal. DT 1990 is open back, T1 has three versions T1 original was the first gen and isnā€™t as high on the ohms but itā€™s not as refined T1.2 sounds great then you have the one I never tried and know very little about nobody really mentions it known as the AKT1P or Astell & Kern T1P no idea the differences on that one. Lastly, the third cousin and itā€™s brother and twin 177x GO / 1770 and T5P which the T5P if I remember right also has an astell & Kern variation. For the record, if you can afford it I would monitor the prices on the DT 1990 or T1.2 I have seen the 1990 sell for $300 last year around the holiday season. It goes for $300 min to around $450 despite being seen priced in the $600s

Definitely go with the speedball addition if you can. I have heard so many great things about that addition. Would be interesting to hear your impressions of it as someone who also owns the beyers.

I can only offer opinions and my own experience as someone who has owned or at least auditioned practically the entire lineup but glad that I can be of help.

I personally hate suede, though I understand it can change the signatures. They are rather thicker compared to velour and not as airy. I havenā€™t tried them on beyers myself but again I hate suedes so I never bother they cause far to my heat to my preference. As you seen from the graph on the 1990s those dekonis are absolutely fantastic for the 1990 but they also work on the other beyers like that too so do keep that one in mind they have some sort of magic involving the treble of the beyer lineup. I think if you wanted the 1990s to sound more like the 990s though you could also use dekoni sheepskin which I tested recently after being suggested to try them and choiceā€¦ it makes a incredibly distinctive sharp V signature though it reels in that sound signature making it more intimate and even more aggressive

now i really hate myself for not going straight to the 1990ā€™s, damnit i second guessed myself, at least i can do this test when i have it all, tygrs when they come back in stock, but yes the price increase right now on the 1990ā€™s is crazy, im assuming because of Covid, same with an interface i was looking at, all waiting on stockā€¦oh ya im going all out on the Bottlehead, crack upgrade, power cable, Mundorf caps, gonna be my first so why not go all out, the Hagerman stuff is more from me finding his guitar pedals, and his blog is just nuts, i respect that dude, but it will be a different signature for sure, more so for the Senns but the otl has me super curious for 600 ohm stuff, we shall seee

ya i felt the same about suede, i donā€™t like the hotness factor, they did look super lux and soft though, idk, im just ready to try as much as possible with this year being a bust, will definitely keep that in mind when i trial all this, hopefully i can articulate what im hearing into ideas for padsā€¦ going to research these pads and T1.2/s, thanks again for the knowledgeā€¦

Pretty much yeah, when I asked about the tygrs being out of stock that was the reasoning with their factories just not being open for production of the items at that point in time. I assume that plus the Tygrs and 1990s being in relatively high demand for very good reasons makes them a bit hard to obtain.

Yeah no worries. If you got some questions feel free to open a post or shoot me a message I will help if I can. Oh and yes, the T1.2 also responds well to those dekoni elite velours. I do recommend them if someone has plans to keep a pair of beyers they are too damn good to pass on. Only buy the sheepskins if you want a lot more bass, though I donā€™t think that to be necessary for the t1.2 at all they are better on the 1990s. If you ever pull the trigger on one of the big ones, 1990 or t1.2, let me know what you think.

Guys, what alternatives to lĆquid Spark and magni 3+ you guys recomend to power the dt990 600? Its becoming very hard to get those amps. Its been 1month long waiting for restock and nothing yet.
What do you think?

The only ones that are worth the 600 ohm off the top of my head outside the spark and magni 3+ / Heresy is probably the JDS atom though I donā€™t particularly recommend this for the 990s as I donā€™t think it will do right by that treble in particular if you are sensitive. Others may be able to help more with units. Though, maybe the IFI Zen Dac if you would be okay with a combo unit more on the warm side and should do well by the headphone well that or maybe the Schiit hel if you can get oneā€¦

If you have a nice larger budget though perhaps going with the Asgard 3 which would just be you taking a step forward. Imo much better amp. If you can afford the pairing grab the modiusā€¦ according to everything I have heard this dac should pair fantastically with such a sharp headphone as the dt 990.

hm, couldnā€™t you just use amazon, ebay, head-fi, or even post on the buy/sell thread here what your looking for? Might help ya out. Stocks have been hell due to the virus and riots

Here in europe iā€™m finding very hard to get schitt, jds and monoprice products. Import them tend to be extreme expensive.
So i donā€™t know if i should wait for re-stock ir go to another amp brand. But also i wanna buy an amp that goes well with the dt990 600ā€¦
Realy in the midle of the bridgeā€¦

Maybe the geshelli stack might do the job but you have to Import that as well all I can say is wait for schiit eu to get stuff in stock. Unfortunately covid fucking up a lot of industries and audio is one of them

Could try a violectric or lake people ampā€¦ both are highly regarded on the forum

Way out of budget for me but thanks for sugestion.

Yeah, maybe i Will have to wait for restock at some point in July. I wanted the lĆquid Spark but i think i cant put my hands on one so lets see if schiit.eu can restock the magni3+ at the begining of July.
Quite a pain to have fresh dt990 headphones and no way to use themā€¦

Thought people said those geshellis tend to make headphones brighter sounding though? Not sure I would recommend a brighter sounding setup for this headphone.

I would like to think there would be some sort of store or something around in the internet that can get you that amp.

@Falenkor @M0N @RiceGuru what do you guys think about jds atom amp with jds dac for dt990 600ohmā€¦ or the atom with topping d10?

Better than lĆquid Spark?

eh? no. Itā€™s a side grade. Nothing wrong with going with Atom stack, though I donā€™t have any experience with atom dac, though in terms of D10 if you can afford the slightly more expensive E30, and you know there also the topping stack of A30 + D30, I do think this would be quite a bit better sounds cleaner more clarity and detail to my ears. Spark + D10 + dt 990 is the setup I started with real nice pairing.

If you want to go with the Atom I think you will be alright, though the spark has been seen to be the warmer amp.

So, IYO, between lĆquid Spark + d10 (or D30) and topping a30 + d30, the topping stack is better pairing with dt990 600?
And atom stack is more like an alternative to the LS + d10 solution?

The Atom stack would be mostly a power side grade, but is a much more neutral stack than the D10+Spark. The A30+D30 stack would be more similar to the Atom stack IIRC. Pairing wise with something that has hot treble like the 990, the Spark or something like a Magni 3+ or Asgard (if you can get them) might be more treble taming options.

I would say worse less power and the more linear sound signaturelemds it to being a weaker pairing

I have these arriving today, already have the 880 600 ohm and just got the Emotiva yesterday. D50s as the dac, will hopefully get to listen tonight/tomorrow if work allows

So, for dt990 600ohm best options are Liquid Spark/Magni 3 + D10/E30(better than D10) ?

Any combination of those should be pretty solid. E30 has a little more functionality and seems to marginally perform better (slightly smoother and more natural from prior feedback IIRC), but not necessarily worth upgrading to if you already have a D10.

Thanks for info. Actualy i donĀ“t have the d10 yet. IĀ“m trying to decide if it pays buy the e30 over the d10. does the performance and sound justufy the extra pay?
