In those regards, I would not have a strong opinion on what stands out enough.
I would have said the HE6SE V2, but that was before I had these all side by side. The soundstage did not stand out enough for me in this comparison for the soundstage to stand out as special. The tuning differences between the gear was where my interest mostly steered toward.
Just watched your Hifiman video, out of interest what was the source gear that you were using with the headphones for the comparison? I can imagine that the he6se would react differently to all the others to the usual desktop amps.
Listening to the comparison, the two I’ve heard before sounded quite different to what I remember Like I don’t remember the 4xx sounding like that, it was nice to me but quite boring sounding personally
Yea I’m actually bored by many things too that play things safe. Where each of us connects to a headphone can be very different.
I still don’t know if I should really rank the 4XX highly because…yea…I’m not sure if it excites me on an emotional level - even though it sounds better to me than the others. And actually, I’m kind of leaning back on the X4 perhaps. It seems brighter in a nice way.
The amp I used for the demo was a Drop + THX 789. It for sure imparts a different sound than my Xduoo TA-30, which is the other amp I play around with sometimes. The THX is actually warmer, which is not something most people expect. It’s often been described as sterile or too analytical, but in my Xduoo comparison video, it was warmer than the tube amp!
There’s just so many amps out there with who knows what impacts on each of these headphones. It’s a bit unfortunate that there could be an amp that each of us might love but never experience
I hope to explore more amps to help everyone find that special amp for them.
Ah fair enough, the 789 is one I’ve kind of actively avoided personally based on views from users on here mainly I used my 4xx, Sundaras and HeK off of my old Asgard 3 and it ran them pretty well, I did find personally that the higher I went in price the more enjoyment I had. Although I did really like the sundaras just wasn’t using them enough to justify keeping them.
I’d be interested to see the comparison done with a higher end amp to see how they scale in the future, could be an interesting video idea
Absolutely. I would love to try more expensive amps.
I reached out to a company asking for a review unit but haven’t heard from them. Hopefully as the channel gets bigger I can get more loaner units sent my way.
Took me about 15 headphone amps to settle on the soloist and about 20 speaker amps to settle on the parasound a21+. It’s almost irritating how much of a difference it can make and all I want to do is listen lol.
Despite a limited budget, I just had to order the next big thing…
The Tanchjim Prism ($600) is on the way!! Coming this Wednesday! Real excited to share impressions and see how it compares to the Tanchjim Oxygen ($270).
First impressions are pretty good actually, on technicals. There’s a depth to the sound. Comparing the Prism to the Tanchjim Oxygen, they’re both warm but the Prism is more open sounding. It sounds like it is indeed more expensive.
Compared to the Mangird Tea, I actually prefer the Prism’s technicals, even if the warmth is not usually my taste. The Tea is brighter, but it seems a bit flatter in presentation.
The vocals on the prism are my favorite aspect. They sound forward and nice to my ear. The vocals hit the spot. But instruments are at times warmed like the Oxygen was. Off the bat, I’m thinking the Prism is a strong A rank IEM. Up there with the Xenns UP. I think it could be higher for some people’s tastes though. But I still lean more for brighter sets.
I’m looking forward to doing a full review/comparison of the upper ranks once I’ve had enough sampled.
Video out! In short: I like them better than the Mangird Tea (at about $300), but I think I prefer the Xenns UP for now. It might depend on music…I need more time to know for sure. But technicals do seem more textured on the UP.
