šŸ”· Emotiva BasX A-100

I said it once long ago, this amp and other Emotiva products in general, offer excellent value for your hard earned money. They are well built, solid performers at a VERY reasonable price, even their ā€œexpensiveā€ stuff Offers good value.

This amp has a noise floor in the headphone output, i made a post exactly about that a long time ago, the noise disappears once you apply some volume. It pushes speakers of an appropriate price point well, plays well with allot of other equipment, and is an absolute Power BEAST when you pull the jumpers offering up a very 50ā€™s style sound signature For your headphone listening experience that i find pleasing and a welcome addition to my collection of sound styles.

I have the opportunity to pickup one of these used for $150ā€¦ thinking about it just not sure what to expect from it using the jumpers.

What headphones do you have and do you have speakers?

Hps: LCD3, LCDX, HP3, 1266 Phi Tc
Speakers: Maggie LRS

I would say itā€™s worth it to try it with that price and your setup haha

One issue with maggies is they are very inefficient panel speakers that are rated @ 4 ohms and like 150 watts. They do dip down to 2.8-2.9 ohms at higher frequencies which trigger a bunch of amps thermal production.

Do you think the BasX will perform ok below 4 ohms as the specs say minimal is 4 so that gets be a bit worried.

The abyss are 48 ohms and the BasX is rated 8.5 watts / channel @ 47 Ohms which sounds like a very appealing power amount with the jumpers on. Does anybody know if the power is somewhat clean at those level or is there a ton of distortion?

Nvm just found a post on audiogon that said the emotiva A300 failed/thermal protection on themā€¦ this just wont work with the speakers.

Long time ago but I hear ya Mon. Iā€™ve got the a-100 paired with a tube preamp buffer. I thought it a little rough also sometimes but the tubes made the sound quite refined, widened the soundstage too. Monster amp for cans and can drive desktop speakers too. Iā€™m in.

Donā€™t get me wrong I do like this amp, just like it more for speakers than headphones. I think itā€™s a good pick if you have both speakers and demanding headphones, but I just wouldnā€™t recommend it as an only headphone amp

Also with a nice tube preamp it can be pretty solid as you mention

Iā€™ve got mb42x-cā€™s as desktops. The amp works fine with speakers and headphones, IMHO.

I hope you went with it. I got mine used also for the same price, super value. I even tried to give the seller more $$, he wouldnā€™t accept. Iā€™ve been pleased over these 6 months or so. Wow.

No worries tho. No offense taken. There are better pure headphone amps no doubt, but I havenā€™t seen any with this amount of power, that drive speakers and headphones, at this price. Pretty versatile and I feel future-proofed for a while. Just gotta keep the noise down. I bought 1/4" impedance/resistance adapters of different values.

Got my a100 week ago and pretty happy with the step up from the pa3, less clinical and better bass. Thinking about adding a tube buffer to it. Also works great with my planars

No I ended up passing the sellerā€™s response was a bit sketch so figured I could buy one new eventuallyā€¦ Currently saving for a Holo Audio Dac and Flux Fa-10 amp.

Any decent ones in the semi budget realm?

I mean personally I like the little dot mk2 as itā€™s a more fun and thicker sound, and also is a cheap and good otl amp

Hmm may need to snag one. Has a pre out also?

Aimpireā€¦

Yes it has a pre out

Damn aimpire

I bought Aiyima tube a3 pro, $49 from Amazon. 6j1 tubes, ne5532 op amps (dip8), bluetooth, bass/treble controls. I figured it as an experiment, may as well go for the features and versatility. A slight treble peak out of the box but after a few days burn in it calmed down. I upgraded with GE JAN 5654w tubes and opa2134pa op amps from Mouser, it is sooo much smoother now and remains a worthy addition to my desktop system. Easy to upgrade tubes and op amps for much better sound all around.
