Congrats to @JeffreySJY for being listed on MusicTeck!
I’ve finally got a chance to setup and spend some time with the Horizons on the new SMSL H400. And I can say that it satisfied what I’m looking for in terms of powering the Horizons while leaving some headroom. I can now also apply one of the PCM filters on the DO400 to feed the H400 without feeling anything is lacking.
I find that the SMSL offerings suit my preference for planar magnetic drivers for headphones and IEMs. In another lifetime, I had a competition car audio system running horn dynamic load drivers… So I’m no stranger to “too much” and fatiguing equipment.
Nice, I am glad that you found a pairing that works well for you.
SMSL has been trying to differentiate themselves from the likes of Topping over the past few years (based on reviews and impressions I have read). To me that is a step in the right direction as I am not a big fan of the Topping sound (dry as Death Valley). Granted that those who have tried some of Topping more recent offerings might disagree with my statement, but Topping is decisive in audio forums (love it or hate it status). Hopefully SMSL continues down the path they are currently on.
Keep in mind I am a Schiit Head, so I don’t like dead neutral gear.
most recent I tried was the A90D which I thought was leagues better than the A90.
I also prefer warmer gear for music but can appreciate a well done neutral (especially for my gaming setup lol)
it was like Topping was trying to emulate Fiio for a bit and now is going even warmer (based on what I’ve seen on reviews)
Does anyone know the difference between the “Au” and “Al” drivers that are mentioned on the website now?
AU is the Gold drivers. AI is aluminum.
I think he sold out of the Gold Drivers so he’s rolling out aluminum. It should sound sonically similar while he’s refining and figuring more things out.
I am selling my Moonlight in Rosy Grey. If someone in Europe is interested, please leave me a PM.
Ngl part of the original appeal was the gold drivers . I’m not sure sonically how much of difference it makes, but boy does it feel fancy. Sorry sometimes I am that shallow.
I did everything to make sure there are close to no differences. The improvement with Al driver is it’s more efficient which allows more amplifier options.
My dude, I totally understand why you made the change to Al drivers.
Buuuuuut part of the fun is that they are hard to drive, and inhabit the same realm as the HE6 and Tungsten . How else am I going to justify my overpowered headphone amp investments.
Here is a sneak peck at the Horizon Closed.
I’m working on more projects and will be bring them to Socal Canjam.
Horizon closed??? Oh gosh, can I just trade it in at this point?
FWIW, I guess, I’m really loving my Umi Silvers as a great addition to my small collection. They’re a really nice complement to my DCA Ether 2s on the one hand and the ZMF VC on the other. I’m not a fan of the stock SE cable, so I’m using a Corpse Cable Mogami XLR cable to connect the Umi to my amp (A70 Pro or Jotunheim 2).
Will the closed Horizons be called the “Labyrinths”?
Lol
Welcome to Hifiguides!
Using a Gravedigger Corpse cable XLR cable on my end as well. Been using it for Starry Night v1 and Moonlight. Liked it so much that I picked up one for my ZMF AO. Then I ended up getting their XLR interconnects to match to go between my BF 2/64 and Mjolnir 3.
The Corpse cable will also be used for Horizon when I pick up a pair next year.
Horizon Closed is ready for Pre-order
