đŸ”¶ Focal Elex

1 week later: Still hurt my head, but im committed to power through
they just sound so nice :sob:

My main issue was I was not used to the weight of the elex. The HD 660s are much lighter and seem better for me since I wear my headphones daily. I’m at my PC a lot

Yeah, I’m coming from a pair fo Sony Z7s and i could wear those things for 12+ hours through work calls, music, games, whatever. I’m sure its just a matter of getting used to to, but advil should be sold as an accessory with new headphones

660s are cool, how’d you like the Elex coming from those?

I actually really enjoyed the sound from the elex. Sounded a little more clear and open. The bass sounded deeper with a little more punch then the HD660s unfortunately that imbalance was driving me nuts. It wasn’t major BUT it just made it sound like the vocals were coming from the back left of my head and it followed the pad when I swapped it to the other side. I just opted to go for a refund even though I did like the sound signature of the elex.

How long does it usually take for new headphones to break in comfort wise? I really really want to keep these but i can’t wear them for more than 45 min or so

What problem are you having with comfort, the focals tend to feel unbalanced, that you get used to.
But not a lot else it going to change.

Pressure on top of my head, the headband takes 100% of the weight but isn’t padded in a way thats comfortable. I tried adjusting it out a bit, but the pads never take any of the weight really.

You could try something like a ZMF pilot pad, or Dekoni Nuggets, I never really had an issue with them.
I’m assuming you’ve tried tilting them forwards/backwards, generally headphones are supposed to be positioned with a slight forwards lean.

I’ll mess around with position but yeah some 3rd party pads or something might be the right move. Thanks for the suggestion, i didn’t know ZMF had a headband wrap.

Strange.
I might use em like 3h and don’t notice comfort issues.
Well it’s bit on the heavy side compared to more plastic ones but weight goes ‘away’ pretty soon.

Focals have been great to me comfort-wise too. Elex, elegia. Only issue is that my left ear touched the metal gril. That kinda distracted me lol

I pulled out the HD660s out tonight. All the detail was gone, just a wall of sound compared to the Elex. Dam, I might get another Elex or Clear and sell the 660s.

I got the Clear and 660s at the same time, among other headphones, and the 660s are the only ones I’ve sold because they seemed like the Clear but just lesser in about every category. Not bad by any means, especially at the price I paid, but couldn’t justify keeping them when the other cans I got did some things better and different.

I look at the 660’s as a type of “palate cleanser”.
I find the Elex’s both addictive and intense, the Grado’s a little bright and the Cascades booming.

I find the 660’s very neutral and transparent. I find they are a very nice break from the more coloured headphones. I wouldn’t want them as my only headphone, but they definitely bring something unique to my collection.

I’m just really enjoying the whole experience of using the 660s. They are so light and comfortable. I had the Elears for a while, and I enjoyed them, but they are big and heavy. I have the LCD2 PF sitting right next to me, yet I keep grabbing the 660s. I don’t feel like I have to baby them. I’m not afraid to take them some place or move around my house with them (because they are easily powered with a portable amp/dac. Honestly, I hardly even notice they are on my head–I just listen to music. I’m surprised that these don’t get more love. They are just good and simple.

These will definitely be my recommendation to anyone who isn’t an “audiophile” but wants to get a nice set of headphones.

I don’t have elex, but can imagine! Amazing songs, well recorded and vocal talent among the best. A fan for a long time. (They sound great on my Sundaras, too, lol.)

hi guys, im really looking to buy the elex, as i was reading here i noticed a lot of complains about drivers unbalanced or headphones dying after a year, should i wait and pull the trigger on the clear ? i know the price difference probably not justify it but i don’t want to buy the elex just to find out they are defectives, I’d like to hear you opinion, thank you all !

No one can assure you that you won’t get a bad set, but they do have a 2 year warranty. I can tell you first hand, they put my HD660s to shame
I’m enjoying the schiit out of them.

With the new Clears coming soon, I would wait and see if you can get a Clear on sale soon. My Elex died and Drop was a nightmare to deal with. Clears also have a 3 year warranty too!
