🔶 Focal Elex

I have really come to value comfort, which is where Sennheiser shines. The HD600 series are cans I can wear literally all day. And sometimes do. Beyers are just a half step behind. This is why I may never get an LCD. I’ve heard the Elex is ok.

The Sennheisers are comfortable after the initial clamps softens up a bit. I find the Elex’s very comfortable.

I work around comfort if the sound is exceptional. I use Dekoni Nuggets in my Cascades and will be putting them on my HiFiman HE6se V2’s.

Focal elex are back at $550 and I am trying to decide if they are worth it. I haven’t heard anything focal, and I am hesitant because of return policy and past poor experiences with drop (5 orders, no successes yet largely due to drop … dropping the ball)

So, is it worth the risk? or let this fish get away.

I LOVE these headphones. I am at about a year and a half and no problems. I have like a 95/96/97% success rate with Drop. And when there is a problem, they solve it quickly in my experience.

A GREAT headphone for that price! CHEAP for a Focal!

I have never seen them go that low. I paid $599.00 and happy to have paid that.

What else do you love? My other concern is the elex (and anything by focal) won’t really fit my sound desires.

These were the first headphone I heard described as W-shaped and they are that. Lots of high end, lots of mids and a surprising, to me at the time, amount of bass. They do everything well.

I know that everybody hears differently and that I am a bit of an oddball, but I rank these far ahead of any Sennheiser or Audeze headphone I have ever heard. Of course I have never heard any of their high end offerings and have no urge to.

To me they are full, rich and intense.
I have described my new favourites (HE6se V2’s) as Elex’s on steroids and I truly believe that.

My taste is new rock, classic rock, blues and jazz. And I am not a loud listener, as in never over 75Db’s and rarely over 70Db’s.

I had the he6sev2 and it is not my priority in sound. If it’s a step up over the elex, I think you probably just saved me the hassle.

Thanks!

The Elex’s are intense, like the HE6se’s. If you are looking for laid back, these are not that.

It’s just not the sound signature I want. The he6se are my favorite open back planar. But even the he6se doesn’t slam and rumble on the level of what I wanted. And its sound is still neutralish. I don’t EQ, so it’s not something I was going to fix. I also tried a bunch of nuclear reactors to power them and just didn’t feel like I was getting my money’s worth even at the common sale price available these days.

The appeal of the elex is no nuclear reactor needed. But, if the he6se is a better version of that, I would rather re-obtain an he6se some day.

It is a LOT cheaper to go with the Elex, based on amp requirements. My Elex is Awesome with my Liquid Platinum.

The LP with the HE6se V2’s goes good and loud but…
If I add the Schiit Loki, then it gets fun with the added gain and bass. But I also don’t want to have to EQ anything.

You can enjoy the Elex with several good to great amps.

I lucked out with my amp for the HE6se. I bought it used and it was still my expensive head-fi purchase ever.

What is it?

I went through a chain of amps. The right cup actually died before I was done. That’s one reason I tried other stuff as I thought that was going to be my core headphone. I liked it more than the arya and lcd-x (but not more than the lcd-xc, and drop ether cx both of which I ended up liking more than the he6se for very different reasons. but I didn’t try them until later)

iFi Pro iCAN. It masters the HE6se V2’s and the T60 Argons beautifully.

I am actually listening to the T60 Argons on this AMP right now. Miles Davis’ newest album is quickly becoming a favourite! :+1:

It sounds even better on some open back headphones, but this is nice.

I am heading toward burson if I go to that level of pricing. Though I am a huge fan of the ifi house sound. The idsd micro signature is my favorite dac/amp. If it had powered the he6se well, I probably would have been done at that point. (it sounds great with it, but bass will distort if you push it loud)

Just got a pair and the mids sound really honky to me. Been comparing to my 6xx and those sound way better than the elex. Pretty disappointed.

Do you guys think I might have a bad pair?

How long have you had them? If you are really conditioned to the Sennheiser sound it might take you a while to adjust.

I have multiple headphones and it is not always smooth sailing going through the collection. Even though I do like them all, if I have been on one set for a week or more, the change can be unpleasant at first.

Only had them for a couple of days so I probably just need more time to get used to it. Bass response is pretty nice and the treble is pretty smooth also. Very comfortable and well built.

I LOVE my Elex’s. When I first got them I played them for 12 straight days. For me it was love at first sight and that was a year and a half ago.

Truly W-shaped. Lots of bass, lots of mids and all the treble you need.

I just bought a used pair, they will be here next week, I hope I won’t have any issues with them.

Is getting an Elear with Elex pads worth it? I heard the Elear has QC issues as well and not enough people made a comparison vs the Elex to pass judgement.

Elex’s are back down to $549.00!
