Thanks Andrew. Are you gonna get a pair of gl850s on your hands too? Would love to see your take on it
I think it might be the same conclusion. Iâve seen the FR and itâs not encouraging. I worry that a certain point my reviews are going to be âsounds good with EQâ, and thatâs the end of it. Which is less interesting haha. But AMT is interesting of course. I think the issue with a lot of these âemergentâ headphones is that theyâre kind of like product exploration for tech demos, without much thought given to the tuning. Kind of like âcan this transducer do X?â, and then packaging them in a marketable product. Manufacturers really stand out and withstand the test of time when they put a lot of effort into getting the tuning right (think Sennheiser, AKG, etc.)
Very good point Andrew. Kind of reminds me of when Tesla first came out with the Model S. It wowed everyone with its acceleration, but the feeling of the suspension and response of the steering did take a while to sort out, and is still behind a BMW. Since GoldPlanar was just manufacturing drivers before this i would imagine that they are just dipping their toes in tuning headphones. Tuning actually isnât that hard in my opinion. Some times just using a filter like Dan Clark Audio does or fixing the pads can help a lot
Thanks for dropping by and giving your thoughts.
I think this depends. Your reviews are generally very thorough and informative (keep it up! I enjoy them!). EQ can be overused and homogenize sounds too much. It also can be used as an effective tweak to increase the enjoyment of music. I think as long as youâre clear about why you EQ - and you probably have to make the case in each video - you can establish a baseline that makes your reviews useful because you EQ everything. My sense of you as a listener is that timbre/tonality is one of the, if not THE most, important aspects of sound to you. EQ can be used to enhance timbre, or it can be used to minimize the differences in timbre between headphones. I tend not to EQ very much because Iâm seeking headphones that have different tonal characteristics for different reasons. But, Iâm more of a melody-first listener. Other listeners are rhythm-first listeners, etc. [To be clear, being a melody-first listener doesnât mean that timbre or rhthym arenât important to me - far from it, I canât stand shouty mids for example and that timbral inaccuracy takes my focus off the melody and other things. So itâs also true that being a timbre-first listener doesnât mean that melody and/or rhythm arenât also important to you]. If youâre consistent about how and why you EQ - again I hypothesize that for you itâs because timbre and tonal balance are so important (you use those terms A LOT) - your reviews are still useful. A tuned-in viewer should think âHow much did Andrew have to adjust this to get to his desired tonal quality?â and use that to compare to their own listening habits. That is whatâs useful, IMO. Anyway, food for thought. Thanks for doing what you do and donât be a stranger on HFG!
Yeah I think thatâs a good way of putting it. I also generally prefer to do as little EQ as possible. Like⊠if something doesnât ârequireâ EQ to sound good, then Iâll be happy to get into whatever flavor it provides. But there are a lot of examples (like the older Audeze stuff) where it was completely necessary.
I think where I draw the line is indexing so hard for measurements that tonal balance and THD are the only things that get evaluated as they redound to sound quality (you guys know the folks who do this) - and for this reason Iâm not an objectivist who only looks at measurements. Iâm still just reporting my subjective experience, which allows me to lean a bit harder into the qualities that weâre not analyzing frequency response or other data in terms of yet.
At the same time, I do think the general goal of my project - to a certain extent - is to help people make sense of FR, so that they can get an understanding of tonal balance descriptions, and at a bare minimum know what they wonât like, so they donât have to rely on reviewer biases that we all have.
I generally donât EQ them at all but they are VERY amp dependent. You just have to find the correct amp for the sound you want.
With my AD18 they were painful to use. With my BTR5 they sounded off. But with a hybrid tube they sound perfect.
Hey do you mind including this in the mod/tuning thread for GL2000? Like with images and stuff? This is my first time modding headphones!
Iâve finally gathered the courage to do the mod you shared in that thread. Just to be sure, weâre supposed to remove both pieces of filter paper right? One between the mesh and the driver and also the one glued to the driver?
Youâre absolutely right, it does remove the nasal sound in the vocals and open up the sound! However I would prefer if we could tame the treble a little, as Iâm very sensitive to treble, itâs a touch too bright for me. So would really appreciate if you include this in the mod/tuning thread too!
yeah i ended up leaving the outermost mesh to protect from dust and i pulled the pad adapters off and cut a piece of felt the same shape as them and put it in the pads between the pad and adapter to calm the treble down a little.
The pad adaptor, do you mean the cut out piece of felt between the pads and drivers? Do you cut the felt in the shape of the driver or the pad adaptor? Do you mind taking a photo of the felt youâre using? Just want to see how thin the material is. Itâs my first time modding and I have absolutely no idea how the felt is supposed to look or fit. Really appreciate your help!
you can use the pad adapter that screws on with 6 screws as a stencil for the felt and then just tuck it between the pads and the pad adapter. i traced the shape and then cut just inside the line so it wouldnât be too big.
Got it! Thanks for the explanation! How thick is the felt youâre using?
I tried 2mm and it was buttery smooth but started sucking the crisp detail away. Ended up sticking with 1.6mm and itâs where I want it now.
Where do you buy 1.6mm tuning foam?
You know, the more I use these, the more I start thinking, the GL2K is a lot like Zeos. A lot of layers but its just shoved in your face and you take whatever sounds its giving you and its a lot but I strangely enjoy them. You just get everything whether or not you like it, doesnât matter, it is what it is. But I guess theres always EQ.
Maybe thatâs just me though. Kind of weird to associate the GL2K with Zeos because I can only imagine a small naked Zeos Pantera clinging to my head in the shape of headphones now.

The heft of these headphones feel different, now that I cant get the image out of my head.
âŠand another reason to never read this thread again.
Hi guys
Seriously confused between Gl 2000 or Aeon 2 noire,
from where i am gl 2000 are very hard to get even if i have drop or linsoul luxuryâs sites, the cost of tax and duty cost will be 3 times of the headphones
so one of my trust worthy local audio sites have finally imported Gl 2000âs and i am afraid they are in limited stock
i have heard from many people that they are just fine but the legendary Z reviews (and others) says its kind of a endgame for him. He also admits hearing other Gl 2000 are not so good compared to what he owns. Aeonâs are easy to get around here.
so at the end should i or should i not
anyone any comments on this will be really helpful.
Thanks.
