Moved over to my Lehmann Audio Linear amp today and the bass is more noticeable!
Started the day on a Violectric V220 amp, but wasnât feeling it after an hour or so. I think the Vio is a little too warm for them.
The Linear amp really brought out the bass, or at least freed up the headphones to do what they do.
Been a blusey kind of day with Marcus King, Bywater Call, Altered Five Blues Band, Kenney Wayne Shepherd and a nice mix of music from Alligator Records (Blues Essentials, Vol. 1).
I find there is some great, clean bass, but theyâre not nearly as thick, dark or bassy as the CFA Cascades or the Aune FT5âs.
@ZeosPantera The last couple of days Iâve been using the Eris to listen to classical music for enjoyment, and a little critical listening too.
The Eris do very well with classical music in my opinion. The highs arenât too harsh when violins are playing, in fact I find it smooths out some violins that were recorded harshly. The mids are warm and present, while the bass is excellent. The Eris seem to bring out the best of celloâs, and double basses.
I have the Eris paired with a Geshelli Erish and a Cambridge DACMagic 200M.
I bounced around today and ended on some Jazz with Nubya Garcia. Her new album sounded great.
Chain was Laptop to BF2 to Lehmann Audio Linear amp and then Hart component cable to the Eris.
Nope, not yet. I find the sound nice and large now. They are better than I expected. I am usually a âyou get what you pay forâ type of guy, but these have been a nice surprise.
Today I am starting my comparisons. I pulled out the FiiO FT5âs, CFA Cascades and Grell OAE-1âs.
I will be sticking with my iFi Pro iCAN amp in SS mode with all sound effects turned off.
PS: Up here in Canada, with a sale, my landed cost was over $400.00, with taxes. Well worth it in my opinion.
I find that if you get used to Eris after a few weeks, putting them in staging mode sort of refreshes that specialness to the soundstage. It also helps with sibilance if people find it too trebley.
Just received the Eris today (bought on Hifigo since it was the cheapest).
What Iâve been listening to, testing the Eris:
Imaginal Disk - Magdalena Bay â Killing Time especially tickles my brain on this album
Lost in The Dream - The War on Drugs
Uzumaki - Softcult
GNX - Kendrick Lamar
Number One - Shiru SAGISU
Run Away From Me - DotEXE (Ephixa Chilled Remix)
The Used (Self Titled) - The Used
At first they felt a bit stuffy like I have seen a couple folks describe, but my gosh they are so much freaking fun even right out of the box. Maybe my ears are broken, but Iâve A/B tested these vs a handful of my favorite headphones (6xx, r70x refine) and I find myself just straight enjoying these.
Vocals are a reduced yes, but they are by no means completely out of the mix. Absolutely happy I purchased these Zeos, I am finding myself going through all my music to give it a listen through these. Canât wait to break them in and see if I notice even more differences like has been suggested.
Well, I just spent almost two weeks with the Eris headphones and it was a Very happy experience! I love the bass and that it comes with a pretty good amount of clarity. Also the headphones are very light and comfortable. These will definitely be a keeper. They are thick/bassy enough that I really didnât enjoy them with my Violectric V220. They were very nice with my Vali 3 w/GE 5 Star tube. I would definitely like to roll more tubes down the road.
My amp of choice was the iFi Pro iCAN. In solid State mode with no sound effects. And these are so easy to drive that I stayed in low gain and couldnât go much past 9:00 on the dial, except for some old jazz and Motown. I listened to this combo for hours and hours and hoursâŠ
I was so impressed with this headphone I wondered if shiny new toy syndrome was out of control?
I should note here that I have Not had a great year in buying Audio gear. I was aiming for affordable and it didnât go as well as I had hoped. Nothing came within a mile of my favourites (I love my Grado GH2âs and Focal Clearâs. I really like my CFA Cascades and Senn HD660S2âs with foam deletion)!
I have found my FiiO FT5âs thick and bassy since I got them. Against the Erisâs, they just sound thick and will be sold in the near future.
Grell OAE-1âs seemed very cool at first with a funky sound and a lot of bass. I have not really been hearing that funky sound recently and they have very little bass compared to the Erisâs. They just sounded weak and unnecessary. They will be going up for sale soon.
I figured the AR5000âs would be another easy win for the Erisâs, but it wasnât. The two are VERY different headphones! After a month of not using the ARs I had remembered them as being a bit bass light, but they are not. They are a very balanced headphone with adequate/enough bass for a lot of people. They are Awesome with jazz! Kind of like Gradoâs, they skew towards the higher registers, but are not treble killers. And I havenât mentioned that they are super light and comfortable. Kind of like the R70Xâs. A keeper.
A huge disappointment in 2024 was a used set, the Meze 109 Proâs. Didnât care for the bass or the treble. Very comfortable and beautiful though. Went to sell them after a few months and ended up trading them for a 2020 set of HiFiman Arya V2âs. While I prefer them over the 109âs, they donât do a lot for me. They will be moving out too.
So, I LOVE the Erisâs and will be moving out at least three sets of headphones.
I also sold one amp last week and might be putting another one up for sale soon.
Good work Zeos! Cheap and I love them. That almost never happens for me.
I am far from a beginner, but decided to scale back this year.
Pretty happy with the whole collection right now, but several items are hitting the sales rack.
Just got my pair today and initial listens have been fantastic. I swear I saw someone post photos of their pair where they scuffed/textured the glass bits.
Are the glass panels on the cups and headband removable? Thinking of doing a bead blast to see how they turn out.
When I took my pair apart. the glass was glued to the plastic. which meant I had to damage the coloring on the back to remove the glass. If you want to give this a try, take the cup apart. There are screws that hold the aluminum retaining rings on from the inside. Once youâre there, you can make an. make an attempt at getting the glass off⊠But if itâs glued, I donât have a lot of hope. However, removing the aluminum rings might be enough exposure to sand the glass to the edge while itâs in place.
So after doing some playing with EQ on the Eris, I feel like the midrange is a bit problomatic on these. Filling in those two dips in the graph makes a pretty significant improvement to the vocal timbre and presentation when I A/B them. And they still maintain the big soundstage and everything so there doesnât seem to be any benefit to having them, IMO.
Also did a bit to tame the treble. With this filter they maintain pretty much everything positive about this headphone while fixing some of the issues, IMO
I also personally flattened out the bass bump to be a more linear rise into the sub-bass and then I think they do actually become VERY good in a way thatâs special. They still have plenty of body and texture to the mid-bass, but they do not overpower the lower-mids nearly as much. I really enjoyed them a lot more like this, honestly. My two cents. But I would consider this change more subjective.
Hereâs a good track to show the improvement in the mid-range in this filter. Adoâs voice just really comes to life and sounds a lot more proper and natural, IMO. It is the intended focus of the track. Without the filter applied her voice just sounds odd by comparison. Again, I donât really think it takes away from the positives from this headphone either. Maybe with a V2 the mid-range can be fixed and adjusted. Or do a DSP wireless version with some fixes to the mid-range through DSP. It would be killer IMO. With the filters, itâs a really good fun headphone, IMO. Nobody really makes headphones like these anymore, either⊠Itâs like a much better version of the old Sony big bassy headphones with the fat earmuff pads they no longer make.
Hereâs a final look at the filter for the Element 4. If you decide to try it, you can try with and without the 190hz filter that makes the mid-bass more linear. Also, Element 4 does automatic adjustments to the gain, but for manual setup, I think -7 to pre-amp gain should be okay. -10 if you really want to be safe. These are easy to drive, so it should not really be a problem.
Can you share the link that JDS provides so I can try this without punching in all the numbers? I think you need a JDS account but you can just share a short URL here.
