Interesting
Well I am not gonna buy aftermarket pads, not a fan of pad swaping or modding headphones

Honestly the current focuspad a is just fine imo, those also work better with glasses too, it’s just a preference thing, but I think the 4xx sounds more refined with the focuspad a, and more fun with the focuspad
It is a matter of taste, but I thought the HD58X was head and shoulders above the HE4XXs. I am not normally a big Senn fan, but I think these are the best bang for the buck headphones around right now. I even tried X2HR
s since then and the Senns edged them out in vocals, although the X2`s had more bass.
I think the Senns are a great all round `phone, at least for music.
Why would you say the 58x where better than the 4xx, if you could dive a bit into the sound to say why that’d be helpful
The quality of the sound overall. Several people have suggested that I had a defective pair. I suppose that is possible, but they seemed fine when I got them.
The vocals were NOT clear. The bass was muddy, woolly, whatever you want to call it. It was the opposite of clear and I tried it with several amps. I kept them for about six months, trying different amps and rotating them in and out of the rotation. They just sounded worse every month that I owned them. I always try to get some context when people are throwing out opinions, so, here is mine:
I like rock. More new than old, horn jazz and blues. LOVE female vocals and vocals in general. My preferred headphones are Grado GH2, Beyer T5p.2, Meze 99 Classic, Koss E95X system and Senn HD58X.
On the upside you can buy the HE4XX so cheap now you won`t take much of a penalty if you move the on. With the price drop, I lost about 50% when I finally (it took months!) sold mine.
I see, thank you for your input, I wanna get more opinions on this as frequency graphs are useful but people’s experiences of actually having heard the headphones are also really helpful.
I honestly could care less about a graph, I always just judge based on how it sounds to me or someone else I trust.
The key to reading graphs is knowing what certain frequencies do when boosted or lowered and which affect you more or less.
Yeah graphs are important. especially if youre trying to EQ a headphone.
Shane how do you like the meze classics? i heard they were dark? the master list website loves them. did you get them in gold or silver?
I Love the Meze 99 Classic’s! I find them very clear for vocals and a nice amount of bass. They are super easy to drive and work great out of my LG V30 phone. I have gold and they are beautiful. The only time they ever disappoint me is right after I have been using open backs. But I find that with all closed backs.
I have a pair of Fostex TH-610’s on their way to me and I will be curious to see how they compare. I think the Denon D7200’s and the CFA Cascades would both beat the 99’s at what they do. And they should for double the price.
Right now my 99’s are my little bass monsters, until they are dethroned.
i recently got the fostex ebony and i’m really impressed with that. have you heard it?
That would be somewhat close to the th610 that he has on the way
I have never heard any Fostex headphones. Just about every review I have read about the 610’s since I bought them has been negative.
Makes me even more curious.
What do you like about yours?
The 610 is more neutral responding than the x00 as well
hmm… interesting strategy, if you dont like it can i have the cups lol? jk, those cups are awesome in dark walnut.
Mine has this great bass and fullness to it. but im not really a basshead. i like how it doesnt go too far with the bass. it sounds great, was gonna ask how you would compare them to the 610
When you live in a smallish city on the east coast of Canada with no audio shows, only two shitty dealers and no audio meets, you learn to buy blindly.
I spend WAY too much time online reading, watching and learning. To give you an idea how that works I will cut and paste from Head-Fi:
Current: Koss ESP/E95X, Sony ZX300, SMSL SU-8, Cavalli LCX, Schiit Loki, Burson Fun-Classic/Vivid, Liquid Spark, Schiit Vali 2, SMSL SP200, Meze 99 Classic’s, Grado GH2’s, Beyerdynamic T5p Gen. 2’s, Senn HD58X’s, Shure 1540’s, Fidelio X2HR’s and FiiO A5.
(And I am currently trying to sell three of these)
PAST: B&W P5’s (gen 1), ATH-M50X’s, Oppo PM3’s, Sennheiser HD6XX’s, NightOwl Carbon’s, Senn HD598C’s, Grado SR325e’s, Sony MDR-Z7’s, Sony NWZ-A17, HiFiman HE4XX’s,Topping NX3s, Loxjie P20, and iFi micro iCAN SE.
So, it’s not working great for me.
Back on subject…i just want a good strong bass. I don’t do EDM, Hip-hop, etc. I am not a basshead. But when someone is kicking a drum I want to hear and possibly feel that sound.
meant to take these measurements yesterday but I fell asleep when I got home the 58x at max comfortably stretched roughly 27 cm. and if you really stretch it it is roughly 33 cm across.
the 4xx calso managed to do 27 cm but when really stretched was about 30 across. I took these measurements from edge of one pad to the other edge and did not compensate for the pads compressing against your head.
Thanks thats really helpful but kinda makes me worry now
The HyperX Cloud that I have extend for 30 cm (headband circumference, fully extended) and that’s too little for me
Why am I cursed with this huge head !!?
damn I thought I had a big head finding hats and beanies are an exciting event for me cause ine that fits well is rare for me
Well this is sad, I knew that the Sennheiser would fit me since they have oval earcups and have quite a bit of extension but it’s sad that the 4XX are too small for me since they supposedly sound better.
