I feel like I also need to mention that I currently own 22 headphones and 4 iems, and I have multiple DACs/Amps. I’m not in @M0N territory yet, but I’m not terribly far removed with the variety I like to have on hand. I’ve followed the general advice to focus on different headphones vs sources, but I’m getting to the point where I will be looking at going for endgame sources vs obtaining more headphones (still going to be getting more headphones, but please pretend I’m not. I am pretending that is the case).
Of everything I own, I would say the best performance I get off of any source are as follows in ascending price range: HE4xx < HD6xx < MK3 Argons < HD600 < TX00 Ebony < Ether CX < E-Mu Teak < Aiva < LCDXC < Elex < HE6 < Clears < Empys.
I own others, and these rankings would change daily depending on my sources but this is how I’m feeling today

Get ZMFs. I have Blackwood Aeolus coming and I but the bullet and ordered Verite Opens even though I want the Closed as well
edit: I don’t own or have even heard them yet, but dammit if they don’t look worth the price. I love Fostex, but already own the Ebonies and E_mu Teaks, so I kind of feel like I know what the 900mk2 will sound like since I have heard the Denon 5200 and 7200s.

I should have the Aeolus and Verite in the next 2-3 weeks. I’m sure I’ll like both for different reasons based on literally everything I’ve ever read, but if for no other reason I will have 5 different pad swaps to choose from between the 2

I also decided to go all in and get the $500 pure silver 4 strand cable upgrade for the Verites. Not saying my opinion will influence anyone else’s, but I will be able to test it on the Verite, Aeolus, and LCDXC. I really like the Audeze cable that came with the XC so I should be pretty critical if it adds anything other than visual appeal
Edit: using the Audeze cable on the Empyreans as well. The Empyrean silver cable is $250 and should also work for all of the headphones I mentioned above

Ah yes, the selling something beloved game to get a new loved item. I have been playing this game too. I have a pile of much loved seldom used items i am dusting off and preparing to throw into a pelican case to ship off in order to add to my current audio addiction. I’m open for trades in the future and have solid MAN toys to trade with.

I like using my tube amps, and the 600s are really awesome when run off tubes. The Argons are great though, and I was drinking last night. If I ranked my headphones again next week, I’d probably have a totally different list. I left out a bunch like the 95x I’m noticing as well.
Most likely no. I’d imagine it would be minimal even if I did. The Verites are one of my endgame headphones though, so I figured I may as well go all in on the cable. I like the fact that I can use it on at least 3 other headphones I own, so if it does make a difference, that’s a bonus.
Welp, I just picked up the verite on sale so I will have to see how it fairs

yeah it does. If I ever end up picking up an Auteur I will hold off for that or Bubinga. I’m tempted to get the Eikon in Viricote. I like the dark woods the most from his offerings. I have the blackwood Aeolus coming, and I asked for a darker stain on the silk wood Verite
