@Tonytex_Teixeira Review of ThieAudio Elixer

The way I took it wasnā€™t about ā€œbetterā€ as much as to taste because Elixir is just darker than all the others. But yes, itā€™s not as technical as the others. So if that is a main criteria, than it wonā€™t be better

I guess a $200 USD Dark Magician is a big ask.

Iā€™m really glad Mark of Superreviews does a visual ergonomics check. There is no way that crescent shape would work for me, Mele/Olina are already a little too much towards that style of fit.

That great but at the moment

There does not seem to be an all around winner or even a top 2 in the 1 dd especially since they changed the Dark Magician

What is your experience with single DD vs multi-BA IEMs in case of external noise isolation? Is there any correlation between the passive noise isolation and the driver type or the only things that matter in that regard are tips and how deep the insertion is in case of a particular model of IEMs?

Just got the Sennheiser IE300. Love the way these things sound but holy God they should be embarrassed to include this kinky cable with a $200 product. Iā€™ve bought $20 IEMs with better cables than this, and the fact that the connector has a proprietary recession that means you canā€™t easily use aftermarket MMCX replacements with it adds insult to injury. Shame on you Sennheiser or Sonova or whoeverā€™s responsible for this!

Now I have to figure out how to pry the bits off so I can use a proper cable with this thingā€¦

DD items have a vent so the driver can ā€œbreathā€ so it works properly.
BA drivers donā€™t need that and even benefit from a closed and controlled environment.

So full ba sets tend to feature a better isolation than DD sets. They provide such a seal that they can create a suction effect on your ears.

depends more on the shellā€™s design if it has vent holes etc

This is what I experienced with the Canon which was my first set with BAs and I didnā€™t like it. I had to switch to foams to get rid of it

Wondering if anyone in here could help me out? Having been through a boat load of IEMs Iā€™ve finally come to what are easily my favorite four. Iā€™ve graphed them here.

My issue is Iā€™m trying to identify what it might be about them. I know charts donā€™t tell the whole story. I just canā€™t help but look at the four and see some similarities. Most apparent in the 5k-8k range. With a similar lift at the 10k. Which treble is usually the main issue that turns me away from what might otherwise be great IEMs.

Iā€™m thinking that this is the key area that decides if I like an IEM. Question is what is in this region and how would it effect the tuning? Just looking for general thoughts that can help steer me for future purchases. Most notably because Iā€™m eyeing the Vulkan, when itā€™s released, just noticed it has more a peak in the areas mentioned. Worried it might not be a good pairing for me. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thatā€™s a similar dip to the Serials and I remember in HBBs video for the serial he says thatā€™s an upper harmonic cut so maybe you enjoy that depression? They all look to have relatively mild treble energy with decent extension. The mids and bass actually look similar as well minus the Moonlight.

Outside of that I got nothing haha

A lot of it depends on what your hearing can and canā€™t reproduce. For example, I listened to a sine sweep and I struggle to hear anything much above 11k without turning the volume up to dangerous levels. Iā€™ve learned my biggest sensitivities for treble are between 4-8k but also that anything around or above the Harmam curve from 2-5k is too much energy for me to find pleasant if the bass/lower mids arenā€™t a little boosted to compensate (bass alone canā€™t make more treble tolerable. So I can stand for a 1-2.5db boost in the mids from 500-1k for more weight (and to balance out more amounts of treble in general). But it sounds like your preference is similar to mine but an even more pronounced sensitivity from 4-8k

There are tricks to diminish the problem, and you can kinda get used to it after some time, but yeah, suctionā€¦ Wellā€¦ Sucks.

One trick I use on my dt300 is :

  • installing them
  • pull the bottom of my concha
  • push the iem upwards
That way, te seal breaks and the compression created by the insertion goes away

Yeah I have tried those before but even that doesnā€™t completely remove the pressure for me. I never experienced the same problem with the Olinas

I do agree: the problem never really go away.

The olina being single DD, they are vented so you donā€™t have pressure build up.

Some full ba sets have vents though, so you donā€™t have to rule out every full ba sets.

The Canons do have a vent but I just donā€™t think it was enough for me. Youā€™re right that I shouldnā€™t rule out all sets with BAs based on a single experience but it definitely makes it harder since I canā€™t actually try these IEMs anywhere without buying them and it seems like these things arenā€™t as big a deal for others so I donā€™t hear them get mentioned in reviews.

Canon not all about bas it is a hybrid. I have had hybrids, single dds and a planar. I have not experienced this but I do not have a Canon. I think some people are more susceptible to this because all our ears are different. I probably stay with dds .

the driver doesnt matter at all when it comes to isolation. Majority of it is due to the shell itself (vented/non-vented, size, shapeā€¦) and then tips (silicone vs foam for example).
