IEM discussion thread (Part 1)

You just described my take on the Serial’s bass, I hear/feel it the same way!
The bass of other sets, in this case the Canon, “coming in from on high”
:beers:

For sure my worry buying anything even if they might be better for some kind of overall tonality and technicalities, is that this is unicorn bass, and sets that graph the same are unlikely to ever “feel” the same.

How crazy ist that I also paid $379

Since the NDA is gone on the Vulkan now. I will say that I am not really a fan of it.

That’s a shame, considering it seemed to graph mostly inline with your preference curve (less a bit of Subbass). I’m definitely sitting on the Vulkan since I just got the Vernus (only room for one Dunu “V” in my life at a time lol) and I probably need to thin the herd a bit, as between a handful of IEMs and buds, I’m pretty much at my endgame until something revelatory comes out. I COULD buy it, but I definitely don’t NEED it.

EST112 beats it in pretty much every way, except bass in stock.
But once you tape it with micropore, its pure murder.

Purely graph-wise I feel like my preferences usually match to the gentle pinna slope of the Vulkan, the 5k dip, and the 8k re-emphasis.
And if the Lokahi/Hekili taught me anything it’s that the even very highest frequencies, and extension therein, can make a good impact on sound. S’all interesting to hear impressions.

that 7-8k can be an issue though.

yes, definitely. Take out your PEQ and try reducing/increasing the upper-treble, its quite noticeable what it does for the rest of the tonality.

So I played with the PEQ on my Q5K a bit and was able to squeeze out some treble. The interesting thing was I honestly didn’t need that to get back what I was missing and then when I turned off the EQ to A/B I felt like I wasn’t missing as much treble as I originally thought!

I am going to give it another day or two but I think the Serial are going to stay and the Canon might hit the classifieds

Mental or physical burn-in I don’t know, perhaps a little of each - but you’ll see clearly that in all my earlier recs of the Serial it was with a reservation that treble aficionados would be disappointed in the sometimes tamourine-y treble. Fast forward a few months, and I don’t find the treble lacking at all. It’s not a stand out strength, but I’m satisfied with it.

With 3 DDs, if physical burn-in ever had a case where it could be apparent in the IEMs profile, it would have to be hear.

That’s exactly what I feel for the Globe’s it lacks the high end zip but the vocals and bass just want me make me melt.

I want zip I put on the Obsidian OH10.

I am looking forward to hearing the EJ07M Lava from Joseph @letshouer tomorrow. :sunglasses:

You heading out the T.H.E. show? Have fun, my dude!

Actually Joseph the LETSHOUER Rep lives in Vancouver B.C. So we arranged a meet up. I am bringing my Penon Globe and OH10 Obsidian to compare.

Yep, honestly the lack of treble is less and less an issue. I did some A/Bing with the Canon and I get why it was hard to decide between the two. The Canon is a really amazing IEM and the detail and resolution on it is noticeably better than the Serial. It’s a tough decision.

Leyding is poppin, Kinera should definitely take notice, great way to present.

Didn’t realise you ordered a Moonlight @Tonytex_Teixeira! Cheers for the review! You should try the Canon!

Finally tried the well-praised IE600. Coming from a v-shaped iem, i set my expectations properly (not too much bass, more neutral presentation), but I’m surprised by the amount and quality of the bass. It hits & rumble beautifully. But it doesn’t over swing when it hits, or overstay it’s welcome when it rumbles.

“Well-controlled” seems to be the core DNA of this iem. It’s the rain that cools down the weather, but not too heavy till it flood your house. It’s the windy breeze that sweeps your hair but not too hard till blow away your pet.

The treble is sparkly, energetic but at times too hot with high hat, “S” & “T” s. Personally, I’m fine with it but i can see how it might be too much for some people.

The star of the show is definitely the midrange. Vocal are lush & velvety, string instruments shine & flourish. Rock tracks guitar strums & distorts deliciously, violin sings in angelic manner. It’s amazing.

The timbre is on point, instruments sounds how it should. The soundstage is pretty small/narrow, though still airy. It’s more “room” instead of “stage”. Not a deal breaker, just something to point out.

It’s very tips-sensitive. Using Spinfit 100/145 make it sounds very hollow while it performs best to me with Final e type. I also personally enjoyed using it with Azla Xelastec cuz it goes very deep, thanks to how small the iem is. The vocal shine even more, it becomes even more smooth and luscious, though high hats can get very hot, probably due to deep insertion.

It’s definitely worth experimenting with which tips suit u best.

Brief comparison with ie900 (brief because, well, I’m too poor for IE900😅) ,

both have similarly small/narrow soundstage, though i feel IE600 abit taller. IE600 definitely more “fun” thanks to the bass, and i find string instruments more enjoyable on IE600. Not sure whether due to the tuning or just how it is.

IE900 feels like a more neutral IE600, which seems to be the intention. But to me, IE900 have the hot treble but lack the sweet midrange & vocal from IE600. It feels like punishment without reward. I’m standing near a hot grill but there’s no meat on the grill. I’m sure some people would prefer the more neutral IE900 but it’s not for me.

Definitely recommend and well worth the pretty steep price😅. I can totally understand the hype now. Cable alil microphonic tho.

Latest review of the Yanyin Aladdin:

Yanyin knows how to tune! @rattlingblanketwoman first showed me the light last year, and now I’ve tried 2 of their 4 products. I can’t afford the Moonlight yet, but I’m happy with the Canon for now

Thought I’d share my post on BGVP eartips: Lets talk about your tips! ;) - #780 by ttorbic. Hot take: they make knock-offs of Final Type E and possibly AZLA

I mentioned on “what you’re listening to tonight” that the bass on a track made me feel like the Serial must be what bone conduction bass is like.

I didn’t expect to get a chance to see if I was right, but with a set that uses BC alongside a 10mm DLC for bass, for sure that is exactly what the Serial is somehow doing with its biocellulose bass driver.

The IEM with BC is the closest I have to replicating Serial bass, except here’s the thing - Serial bass is still better. Less fuzzy around the edges, and far more cohesive. The other set can be tuned with nozzles and filters to have higher quantity, that’s all.

Still reckon Serial’s complete tuning, very organic, is still what’s best for me right now.

Been spending the last two days playing with the squigs equalizer feature (shout-out to @hawaiibadboy for having so many graphs) and my favorite so far for the Serial has been a hybrid of the Serial and Olina double mesh mod graph. It adds just enough treble back in without changing what the goodness of the Serial
