IEM discussion thread (Part 1)

Maybe something like this for portable?

I dont take multiple iems out so I dont need any cases like that.

Ain’t that the truth?..

Ahhhh…I’ve been dithering about with IEM sources and set upgrades…Hugo2 or Cayin n6ii or IEM next tier blah blah…the UM MEST is the new big bang for buck :man_shrugging: n6ii versatile, Hugo2 always awesome or the Z1R solid but maybe fit issues…what’s a man to do?

Answer Amazon :metal:

Plus payments over 5 months are interest free and returnable if fit is an issue

Here is my opinion on why having multiple iems instead of a single iem is actually better.

  1. If your iem dies/breaks/stolen it will hurt you much more. (and you wont have a backup if that happens, so you be stuck waiting for your replacement)

  2. Much higher risk of being dissatisfied due to not knowing exactly what you want in an iem, if you have multiple you start to see what you want and dont want.

  3. Fit, if you cant try it out before you buy it and it turns out it wont fit or is uncomfortable, it is essentially a waste of money because if it is uncomfortable you wont want to use it for long or if it doesnt fit you wont get the full potential out of it.

  4. You might get bored of hearing the same iem, in which case having multiple iems in a rotation of some sort will help alleviate it and keep it fresh.

Ok here is my take/replies on this…

1 I have quite a few IEM’s and my expensive audio kit is individually insured.

2 See above and my recent purchase is returnable.

3 Fit?..yeah that’s a biggy for sure, but the only problem IEM’s I’ve encountered are my P1’s and my ex 03’s…and the Z1R is returnable :+1:

4 If you have just one and one source then maybe?..but it’s still all about the music :metal:

Not everything is available on amazon (some dont even ship to me lol).

And they are also more expensive there.

Amazon UK was cheaper than UK Sony dealers by Ā£400, even close to secondhand/suitcase imported sets, with 5 months interest free, returnable and full warranty…Gift horse imho.

Nice. Although I am only looking at Chi-fi so might be different from western/others.

Congratulations! Truly the endgame. I want your reactions. I’ve been thinking about the same thing for a while.

BTW… I got to hear the Andromeda. It sounds great but I’m going to take a pass on it. For me, I need a DD in there. For the price tag, I expected more. :sob: Could be since all my IEMs have a DD for the bass, that’s what I’m used to and without it, there’s something missing.

Yup DD is a must for me in the bass (planar also sounds good).

Thats why I dont like all BA setups.

What source were you using with the Andro’s? and as you well know tips and fit :+1:

I brought my Fiio Q5s to try it out along with a bunch of my tips. It wasn’t the 2020 Andromeda which is the one I really wanted to hear, but what I heard didn’t make me want to drop the cash for it, even used. My favorite genre of music is very technical progressive metal. Having that hard hitting bass is essential and I wasn’t feeling it. It’s a beautiful tuning.

I love my Andro’s they are my go to for my serious listening but the Vega’s are stupidly fun and now grab half my listening time…wonder where the Z1R’s will fit in :man_shrugging:t2:

I hear ya. I have a feeling the Z1R is going to make your Andromeda obsolete. I at least hope you love it that much.

I think all these Fiio IEMs are going to keep me busy until I feel comfortable purchasing the Z1R. I’m still just unsure of that fit. It scares me. I’m already dying to hear your reactions. I’m jealous! I want photos too.

You’d fucking love the Vega’s then lol… but the treble my be a bit much for you but depending on source and tips I reckon you’d be :metal:t2:

Ugh, another one to add to my list. The Mangird Tea is teaching me to appreciate treble done well. As long as it didn’t bother me, I didn’t care about treble. Until you have an IEM with lackluster treble (my L3) do you begin to understand what you’re missing. When I first heard the Tea, it was shy in the upper bass and bright. It was right on the edge of my comfort zone. Since, I’ve come to really enjoy everything about the Mangird Tea. It might not be my ideal tuning, but I really enjoy it now and love it’s treble more than all my IEMs.

Don’t think that will ever happen tbh, the Andro’s have a magical way with their mid and treble presentation… best IEM ever? nah but they do come close for me sometimes though

Reserve judgement till you get that Z1R.

I continue to be amazed by what continues to be done with this tiny thing that is stuck into your ears. When I don’t think anything can sound better, something else rears its head and forces me to re-evaluate everything. Probably no one should take any advise I put out there since I’m still in the learning process and still excited to be on this IEM journey.

Example… I have this FH7 sitting here and the FH3 clearly sounds better to me for 1/4 the cost. I haven’t spoken much about my reactions regarding the new FD1 I have, but needless to say, it’s completely different than my first. I am actually afraid to compare it back to back with the FH3 for what I might find, and it’s only 60 bucks!

If it can get better from here, I’m all for it.

In terms of fit, give it time until you judge if it’s really bad. Took me a few days or so until I was able to wear it comfortably for longer periods of time.

I did a fair amount of research on higher-end DAPs recently. I talked with M0N some and he recommended the Cayin with E01 amp. The other great one in that range I found if you’re just looking for raw IEM performance is the A&K SE200, the one with multiple DACs in it. Apparently that sounds very close in quality to their $3,500 flagship.

The tricky thing about Campfire stuff is that they are extremely sensitive to sources and tips. It’s a potential big downside to them. The frequency response on Campfires varies pretty wildly depending on the source you’re using. If you’re feeding them from a good source (under 1ohm impedance) and have tips that seal well, Andros are not bass light in the slightest.
