IEM discussion thread (Part 1)

maybe in like 6 years I could afford it lol

Talking about saving money. I’m not sure what my next move should be: buy a $200 IEM in the next few months OR keep saving to buy a $500+ IEM in a year or so?
I have Timeless, P1 Plus and other cheaper IEMs.

Neither one nor the other  .

If you have the Timeless (and like it), I’d say wait for a good upgrade.

Save up, brother. $500-$650 I think is the right territory for the upgrade coming from the timeless.

or wait for a steal on something secondhand that you otherwise wouldn’t consider

I am glad you qualified it as the used price. A new Clairvoyance is $739, that is a tough comparison to the Penon Serial, at only $299.

Always. I never said I would look only at new sets.

Looks like 4 configs are possible on the Erasmus: 00, 01, 10, 11. Review here: Akros Xinhs Erasmus Review - Mobileaudiophile

Oh totally forgot to measure it. Will get to it shortly. Here you can listen to the Erasmus on 00

oolala! thanks for this!

As I initially said there are only to possible settings. 00 = 10 and 11 = 01.
Ignore the 109 dB that’s not the actual level I measured at.

I’m not sure the Clairvoyant justifies its price after all the new offerings, including TWS  . This is a bit off topic, sorry .

I really thought the ā€œin this rare case, at basically the same priceā€ would sum up that usually it wouldn’t be the same price, but it looks like it’s been read several ways.
In this unusual case the Clairvoyant used was the same as a new Serial. Otherwise Serial would easily still win on value.

Thank you for the measurements! I’m quite surprised that 00 = 10, and 11 = 01. @Tonytex_Teixeira, did you measure all 4 combos and see a difference between all of them?

Listening to your sound demos, I’m kinda surprised how much I prefer the Vortex over the other three, especially on the more ā€œpopā€ kind of music. Tell me if I’m wrong, but the other three are all flavors of relaxed from 4-8k, where Vortex has more clarity there.

Vortex has lots of detail and clarity, a great upper end - somehow no sibilance, at least for my ears.

I definitely want to try it, but I don’t want to spend the money on it (secondhand or from Penon) and get stuck with it

Side question: you’ve tried Kai right? Considering how closely Kai can graph to Serial of course Serial is an upgrade, but how BIG an upgrade is it, to jump up 3x the price?

I haven’t actually. I considered it but I asked Chris and he said Kai was drier than Serial. On rare occasions I find part of what the Serial is doing can be a little dry for my tastes, so I didn’t want to spend money on something I knew wouldn’t be able to replace it.

I won’t buy to compare and then return either. atm I’m hoping there’s a chance for me to pass a UPS store before Nov 4 to drop the Rosefinch off because that method was one of only two actually free return options with Amazon (as long as an honest reason for return is given, which I did). I’m realizing all these small purchases are what’s killing me trying to sell things off given the relative shipping cost, and that they’re so affordable bought new, vs. some bigger ticket items.
