IEM discussion thread (Part 1)

That’s a pretty sick spread to listen to. Love it!

Been listening for about 5 minutes. Extremely impressed. Haha giving my lz a6 a run for its money?!? First thought…Smooth criminal?? :male_detective: So far it’s like honey to my ears. Uffff

Would anyone with a Q5K and the Kiwi Ears Cadenza mind trying out something? If it matters I’m using FA Type E tips. With the stock cable switch between normal and high output power. Is it just me or do vocals significantly change? I swear it feels like it smooths them out more. Need y’all to let me know if I’m going crazy or not.

My candeza is on the way, should be able to test that out with Q5K and the type e tips once it arrives.

Hot take UM Multiverse Mentor might be the most overpriced IEM I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I say pleasure because it is in fact a pretty good IEM, but it would be amongst peers in the $1500 to $2000 range. $4500 is a BIG stretch!

How are you liking the candeza so far?

Dang well if someone is willing to pay for it. But still 4500, that better perform. Although being honest I have sorta given up on summitfi iems :(. Maybe I’ll find one I like in the future, but in my experience I get disappointed too often. Definitely a niche market.

What do you guys think? Should I trade my practically brand new HD800S for the Mest Mk2 and the Clairs? Dude certainly knows how to make an attractive trade offer…

I have seen prices on the mk2 for about 800 and 450 for the clairs. Adorama was selling the hd800s for about 1200 recently. Price wise might be right on the money but sonically I’m not sure.

Depends on use case and existing collections:

  1. Do you use IEMs or headphones more often?
  2. Does the HD800S or the MEST/Clair fill a specific niche in your collection of either headphones or IEMs? Do you already have a solid collection where adding now may be redundant?
That’s what I would ask myself in order to have a definitive answer the question. Like @Jawsq said, I think that it’s basically a wash on price either way if you later changed your mind.

Quick impressions, Hexa is a sea of smoothness with tasteful bass. The Hugo 2 makes a HUGE difference vs anything else so far (mojo 2/ original mojo / q5k). Mids are just beautiful and don’t mind the treble extension. Very pleasant indeed, I can listen to these for hours. Now if you want to party thats the LZ a6, but i can only listen to these for about 3-4 hours, ears get hot! Different sound. Both excellent from my point of hearing.

For @Ohmboy when I listen to the A12t versus the U12t the A12t come across just a little less warm in those lower mids with a slightly quicker rise into the mid bass which seems maybe a touch more linear as it extends into the subbass. Basically it sounds like you end up with a slightly faster rise to the bass shelf and a slightly flattened mid bass hump versus the U12t which has a slight but noticeable midbass emphasis and a more gradual slope to the mids. I have to emphasize that all these differences are quite subtle and could very well just be attributed to differences in the fit though I do believe I am getting a great fit and seal with the U12t.

The mids sound identical to me after the completed transition from the bass. The treble seems to also have a bit more energy in the presence region, but this is again pretty subtle. One thing that surprised me is that I do seem to be picking up a bid more detail retrieval on the A12t and the bass seems to be a touch tighter and more articulate.

To the guys who answered regarding the trade, I ultimately decided to keep my HD800Ss for now though I am letting him take my OG Monarchs home for a few days while I keep his Clairs because I’m actually really diggin’ what the Clairs are doing with some of my favorite prog/neo-prog tracks right now.

Interesting…

Just a quick added thought: Even though the differences are subtle they do seem to increase perceived separation and detail, giving the listener a more strictly defined and layered effect which I imagine will the very useful for use in actual monitoring circumstances, particularly live. Up to now, my live monitor of choice has been the A18s, but I do plan on giving the A12ts a run on a few shows on tour starting in January to see how they stack up. One of the reasons I got them is that another drummer friend of mine that uses 64 Audio IEMs says that he prefers the way the A12ts present the low end/rhythm section compared to the A18s/A18t. It’ll be interesting to find out and if you guys are interested I can certainly keep you all posted.

It’s very hard and takes a toll, but you get used to it. Having clear thoughts laid down with actual evidence to better give an idea (or just cover your back) takes way more time than people realize. Getting impressions is fast, putting pieces together takes time. This is why I think youtube has thr upperhand.

After a while, problem is more related to time management as a writter. There was a period this year I had a lot of free time and nothing interesting to talk about other than regulars, due to poor releases.

Now i have absolutely zero time due to unproceeded circustances and I got like 30 iems in a row… You know you are cooked once you start to decline stuff.

@rattlingblanketwoman and @Tonytex_Teixeira, you two agree on a lot of aspects about the Serial! Between you two, I wouldnt be surprised if you’ve heard 95% of decent DD sets released in the last couple years :joy:

Thanks you mean. I don’t fall into despair: the set is still away for surgery. It won’t come back exactly how it went, but maybe it is for the best, we’ll see.

For the tech attachment, I totally get it. For the tea, it really is special as it the Cult set, the one that kick-started nymz in the hobby.

I usually don’t really get attached to tech. The inconvenient thing is that if something breaks, I am really tempted to buy something even more expensive in replacement. So it can escalate quite quickly.

LOL

A graph is a graph, I don’t think this guy got the memo, brother  does he think Crin is altering graphs forrrrr what reason?

He just had butthurt that Crin heavily monetized his schtick and thinks he’s a shill.

Never did answer me why his feelings have anything to do with the graphs, though

I Definitely get that, there are some threads that have small communities of dudes that are cool and unlike a lot of what’s on the other threads - I like hanging around the discovery thread just to see what’s new and what people are listening to now but some of these dudes can be unbearable, hence why I rarely comment. Most of the time that I do comment, it’s mostly to you or if someone is asking a question that I could potentially answer - that’s it - I can’t take much more of those dudes to be honest

I think here we do truly have a lot of mutual respect and friendship like relationships with one another, it does feel like I come here everyday just to hang out with a few of my buddies and talk audio and general life - this website has changed my life for the better as cheesy as that sounds.

That listening session was today? Nice - always looking forward to your conclusions! Enjoy the listen, my friend
