IEM discussion thread (Part 1)

That makes sense, I picked that up during my time in the Army, but it was eons ago.

He used to say it as an imitation of the dude in Top Gun who says Negative Ghost Rider, the pattern is full to Maverick when he requests a fly-by before he buzzes the tower. He was a good, funny dude, a great CO, and an awesome Marine to be in a tight corner with.

Edit: BTW, nice to see yet another vet on here. I had no clue there was a little clique of us on here.

This was an absolutely epic write-up, dude, thank you! I hope you also found some enjoyment with the tracks. I didnā€™t mean to come off as a douche earlier btw asking for your impressions, I was just genuinely curious and I wanted to maybe rec some new stuff, just in case you hadnā€™t heard it yet.

That Parcels track sneaks up on you, doesnā€™t it? Itā€™s a tough track for an IEM to playback properly from start to finish. Some of my sets do an amazing job with the first 2/3s, like the OG DMs, but then once that ridiculous Sub bass drop hits towards the end, it just doesnā€™t have enough energy. The closest thing I have to a proper playback on that song comes out of the Monarch MKII. Seriously crazy imaging and fairly wide stage to support the vocals and instruments in the beginning, then BOOOF crazy bass notes to rattle the olā€™ skull.

Thanks again, brother!

no problem at all! the Daft Punk tracks are some of my favorite and it was cool hearing some new bands. I can totally see that Parcels track being a tricky one to do right all the way through. I can see a tuning like the Monarchā€™s working really well for it!

Very nice headphone amp as I am a mini fan of KAEI which is why I bought it. I bought the regular version and then swapped in an OPA828 but the standard is an OPA also, 2132 iirc. I have been a big fan of these affordable headphone amps to supplement whatever dac you have, from dongles to my other KAEI/TRI TK2 which I set line out to TAP2. I do think the tubes are slightly smoother but more important is the on/off switch. On the cheaper hybrid amps, not always possible to power off the tube like the Aune Flamingo. Still nice to have options on a $100usd amp with the tube, h/l gain, and your choice of opamps.

Legato update:
One of the tuners comments on some of the youtube reviews and on the Ian Fann one they mentioned that the Legato can take a +20db boost without distorting!!! so naturally I started EQing haha. I never got that close since it doesnā€™t need any boost but I did try to EQ to the Maestro FR and while it sounds really good. I think I prefer the original tuning. Maybe I am becoming a mid bass fan??

Hey measurement gurus was wondering if you could help me troubleshoot this problem Iā€™m having trying to take measurements in REW. Seems the measurements Iā€™m getting are lacking bass?

Here are my preferences

And hereā€™s my setup. Iā€™m running it through a USB dongle thingy. I hope thatā€™s OK

Oh mods sorry if this is an inappropriate thread to discuss this but I canā€™t seem to make a new thread

First off, I donā€™t own any measuring rig nor have any experience in the matter, but I fiddle with REW and so will make some guesses assumptions from what I know about these things.

I think such a device has to have a calibration file with it that ā€œcorrectsā€ some measuring issues it could have. I donā€™t know if you did that as I canā€™t see the parameter from the screenshot, so it could be worth a check, even though I think such a bass behaviour canā€™t be explained by a calibration file.

to me, it seems like you have no seal in your rig. I would fiddle with insertion depth and tips to get something more ā€œaccurateā€.

take a look if the input device and ā€œinputā€ looks the same.
Change the ā€œoutputā€ to only a single channel (L or R depending on which u are measuring).

Besides that I dont see anything wrongā€¦if possible try the coupler connected with something else to see if its better or different.

Not the biggest fan of this guy and most of what he says, but Iā€™ll give this a watch I suppose.

Tbh thereā€™s a lot of terminology - gets hard to digest with an 1 hour video. Watching it in short chapters helps. Some useful stuff tho.

Thanks for the help! I did that and the measurements look worse somehow, haha
Blue is the single output measurement.

Ahhh this makes sense! I put on foam tips and the measurements look the same and thereā€™s definitely a seal now but maybe my rig is leaking elsewhere. Iā€™ll try taping it up, haha

Edit: so I covered everything except the top in electrical tape and still get the same issue. Looks like itā€™s just plain broken :pensive:
Ok, sorry everyone back to the usual discussion thanks for trying to help me out though! :hugs:

I agree usually but this video is very informative. I am interested in investigating this whole inverted polarity thing in IEMsā€¦

If you flip only one side.
L
negative
positive

R
positive
negative

OR

L
Positive
Negative

R
Negative
Positive

Then you will hear a big difference (out of phase).

Doesnt matter if they are both consistent though.

I meant that sharur mentioned some multi driver IEMs are wired where one or more of the drivers are wired with inverted polarity (if Iā€™m understanding it correctly)

Kz for example seemed to do that Wirth dq6 and zex pro. Was it intentional or not, I donā€™t know.

Buying a set of Penon Serial tomorrow the hype better be legit!

Things I enjoy about it:

  • DD timbre
  • Comfortable shell
  • Sub-bass has a sort of attack that makes it my preferred sub-bass out of many. Some subwoofery sets have a lot of sub-bass but it sort of exists underneath everything separately, like a sort of supporting mists. I feel the sub-bass is very connected to the mid bass.
  • I like netural sets and I like bassy sets, and the Serial just seems like the best of both for me
  • I donā€™t feel treble is lacking, a treble head would
  • They sound very natural. The majority of sets I listen to donā€™t have the ā€œsound made from wood and brass and stringā€ feel these do, I guess folks would say ā€œorganicā€
  • They donā€™t take high volume as well as some even darker sets, but they get comfortably loud, and itā€™s worth the trade-off for them not to be too dark
  • Vocals never seem to forward or too distance. I like intimate vocals, but not every day.
  • Stage is at best a little above average, Iā€™m never disappointed by it but itā€™s not going to have stage/imaging as its calling card like some sets.
*At used prices - the value. When they do show up (less and less) they are a little over $200, and thatā€™s great value. Anything more than that and I couldnā€™t justify keeping them because I could move to something cheaper and put the money back into the family. Tthe way I see it mine would probably only go for $160-180 as the connectors are a little loose (never a problem when wearing, but they can drop of the cable while untangling) and thereā€™s nothing at that price I would happily swap them for after trying lots of things at that price and higher.
