TOP & EW200 REVIEW
So, finally the TOP. Let’s just jump into it as I do think it lives up to the hype.
The overall sound of the TOP is bright leaning with a sub-bass boost. The main star of the show is not actually the bass, but the treble. If you like sparkly, airy, and lively highs then you’re gonna love the TOP. It’s great for mid volume listening, fills in the scoop of the variations, and doesn’t have the wispy treble from it as well, so an overall better Variations in that regard. I will say though the Variations does have tighter and bouncier sub-bass where the TOP can be a bit boomy at times, still clean in the midrange but just not as tight.
However, Vocals on the TOP are much more natural - bright and energetic without getting thin and light compared to the Variations. Although male vocals aren’t as textured or heavy as the DM or Tea 2 - they aren’t pushed back or buried either and extend fully as the midrange is clear and open with detailed instrument separation and layering. Stagewise it’s airy with a great sense of space, not holographic, but things are nicely laid out in front of you. Resolution and clarity wise it’s right up there with the Variations and very similar with the Ultras, but the 7K peak in the Ultra does make notes sound a little sharper and more “resolving”. Overall though very very similar tech wise with the TOP having punchier bass and more forward vocals.
A/Bing it with the EJ07M I prefer the EJ07M more, and they’re still my pick as the best all-rounder before the Monarch MK2. The stage on the EJ is more holographic with a tighter and more resolving and textured sub-bass. It’s overall more balanced and clean vs the energetic and lively sound of the TOP, however, the TOP does have more air and the stage feels more open than 3D with sharper notes, but you can’t go wrong with either just really depends on what you prioritize. With a 300 mesh filter applied, the TOP actually scales very well and the bass tightens up a bit as well.
As for the EW200… Nothing much to say here, it’s another harman tuned budget IEM. Very similar to the Waner and cadenza but with more uppermids and treble focus. It’s essentially a zero with more low-end, so in that regard it’s an upgrade to the OG zero as it tames the highs and adds more body to the notes. You also get a sturdier metal build, and higher quality detachable cable - is it worth double the price? Sure? The driver does sound faster and notes feel overall sharper, but if you wanted more low-end you can also apply a filter on top of the OG zero.
VS it’s younger brother the EW100 the 200 has a little more sub-bass and slightly sharper resolution. It’s technically an upgrade, however, I do still prefer the more natural and balanced tuning of the EW100, and they’re still my favourite before the RED. Overall the EW200 gets a B-, and as for the TOP it gets an A+ for tonality, and S- for tech, which brings it to an overall score of A+.
As for vocals the Studio 4s are better than the TOP, more powerful, clear, and natural, but the TOP overall is a slight bump in technical performance with solid vocals as well, high B.
Anyhow, thanks for reading and I hope everyone has a great weekend!
