đŸ”¶ Koss KPH30i

You could give the Kramer mod a go. Just go slow. Every video I watched on the KSC75 mod before I did it, the first thing they did was drill a big hole in the middle, then complain it was too sharp.

Have a good long listen first, identify the areas that seem to be lacking (Lennon’s solo albums led me to fix the crater in the mids on my 75s, could barely hear his voice before), then drill one hole and listen, advancing only if you need to.

If you mess it up you can always buy a pair of KSC75s for a replacement grill, they all use the same one. Shame they don’t all use the same headband mount.

Gosh this headphone really is weird. Porta Pro is cool and all, but this really is ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆. I wasn’t able to appreciate it fully when I first tried it along with my first Porta Pro. Now that I’ve had one to keep for several days, I feel like I really get what the KPH30i is about.

If I try to critically listen, I can clearly tell it is lacking in resolution and awfully dark for my taste. But damn, it just somehow always seems to sound good when I let my mind wander off with the music or get preoccupied with other activities. To me, it’s not headphones for the sake of enjoying it as headphones, but for the sake of actually enjoying music.

I’m jusy going to keep mine (maybe I’ll mod a second pair) stock. I definitely can make them sound better and feel better with mods, but
why would I need to. It’s like modded Miata vs stock Miata. Modded is great, but there is just something about being able to accept stock for all its strengths and weakness and simply enjoy the pureness of the experience.

Just sold them on ebay to someone that will get more use out of them than I would have.

They are a great budget set, and can really hold their own, but I already own the PX-100 II, which to me are the absolute king of budget headphones. They do everything better than the Koss range, which just shows how impressive they really are as that is no easy feat.

Still, if you want a cheap, great sounding pair of headphones, you really can’t go wrong with these. They make shit like the Grado range even more laughable.

I bought a couple sets of Yaxi Pads back in March and have been enjoying the sound a lot. To my ears they have a great balanced sound across the board.

I was bored so I picked up a set of the Grado pads along with some HD 25 pads and did some tinkering yesterday. So far I have not been able to match the sound I get with the Yaxi’s.

Luckily they only cost me $20 so I am not going to sweat that part of it. I need to do some more brainstorming to see what other things I can try that might get these sounding better.

I may have to get Yaxis just because the stock pads are permanently indented with my ear shape after only 5 days

Definitely less comfortable now than on day one now that the pads don’t exactly cushion the main pressure points on the ear.

Yaxis don’t change sound much, yes?

The stock Koss pads are so rough. I bought a big bag of cheapo pads for $5 and they’re sooo much softer and don’t rip on the teeth. Yaxi’s are like little pillows.

@Not_Daijoubu For me, yaxis diminish just a bit of midrange( vocals) clarity.
However, the comfort more than makes them worthwhile.

Hmm, alright. I experienced similar with the Porta Pro, so I guess it’s worth a go.

Only if I can cleanly unclip the pad mounts. I already broke a shitton of pins on day 2 when I tried to remove them with pads intact. :cold_sweat:

Ha
I haven’t tried them on the 30i for that very reason. Maybe someday I will
feel bold and give it a shot! The yaxis don’t stretch quite far enough to fit around the whole housing, imo.

Need to open them up to fit. It’s really easy to do when you know where the clips arw located. There is a guide pinned in here somewhere.

Go careful and it’s a breeze.

Got the Koss, 2 actually, yesterday from Amazon US x Germany, so I did not have to pay import taxes separately.
The bass is really slamming, mids at least comparable 85% to 58x and treble is nice. For less than 30€ it is awesome.
The really noticeable thing is the soundstage. It is not as detailed but very similar and is surprisingly big for such a small 60 ohm (?) driver. The second pair goes to my dad for xmas. DMS and me can wear these no problem. I have very similar giant head, so thumps up even for chubby people same as 58x. NHD20 is too small 1-3 centimetres are missing to be on the safe side. I never had issues with Beyerdynamic headband sizes.

If the KHP30i pop up on EU Amazon buy it and force some of your friends to witness the great sound.

Please excuse me, I need to play 2077 with 58x. It is the most audiophile game I ever played so far. 2nd place goes to Escape from Tarkov and Squad. 3rd might be Stalker with mods like Misery and Anomaly.

are you going to do the Grado pad mod’s?

I am not sure, would need to import it but I would recommend it for sure. KHP30i are at least 80% of the 58x to me but less neutral. I get OCD just from thinking Cyberpunk 2077 is audiophile. I sit here in my car (in game) and the radio stations are so good. entering a club you hear the bass in the distance coming in boom. Gesaffelstein maybe is also in the game. (I cant play. GTA made it hard to stop the radio but this is too much)

if you can buy off Amazon, there are a number of third party brands for a lot less.

Just did the Grado pad swap on my 2nd pair of KPH30i (Original pair has Yaxi pads). I’m loving life right now. Need to do the mmcx cable mod next.

Overall, I like the Grado pad swap better. The Yaxi pad swap took some of the sparkle in the highs for me. Completely swapping out the original pads for the Grado pads really does bring the treble back. It is way more comfortable too.

Some people on Zeo’s video said to put the Grado pads in hot water for 15 seconds to soften the pads up. Has anyone tried this?

I’m curious to know the answer to this too. I wonder why they limit it to ‘15 seconds’.

I’ve washed new(er) pads this way with no issue. But I tried it with an older set that was very dirty, and they started falling apart. So YMMV, but if the pads are in good shape, it has worked well for me.

Is that the ear pad of a Focal Clear Professional?

Feeling like quite the “genius” today

A couple weeks ago I posted about not liking the sound of the Grado pad mod. Of course I realized today that I bought the wrong pads (much smaller than the cushion pads), and now the shipping times for all of the correct ones are a few weeks.

Looking forward to getting the correct pads and trying again.

Decided to try out the Grado pads on a second (non Yaxi) set I had around. Definitely gets a little more width, imaging, and low-end compared to the Yaxi pads. I’ll be doing an MMCX mod in this pair as well as possibly different tuning (foam maybe try to close them idk yet).
Probably wouldn’t recommend them over the Yaxi pads but they’re fun if you’re just looking to mess around.
