šŸ”¶ Koss KPH30i

Drop has them now for $20. Reg, not clear.

Got mine yesterday, they sound good but people that keep comparing them to 58x are silly.
I own 598s and even tho they sound quite different its obvious that 598s does everything better, Soundstage separation and detail are not even close.
Kph30i makes everything sound together.
Overall I like them tho.
Do they really sound close to 58x but like warmer?

@ServedHot I have heard both. IMO 58x is definitely a better hp overall, however the soundstage is narrow for m_ taste. The Koss ā€œtrioā€ all do better in that regard. I like the ksc 75 best ( on a parts express headband for a bit better bass response.)

Has anyone done any headband mods, or placed the drivers in other headphones ?
Just wondering as I have already noticed the odd white mark appearing in the plastic in certain areas. I have been incredibly careful with them so far too. No portable use or anything that would put strain on them.
Like my PX-100, theyā€™ll solely be for indoor use. Hopefully they can hold up as Iā€™m going to the trouble of re-cabling and putting some Yaxi pads on.

Why am I using cheap portable headphones for home use only ?, well, because it is impossible to find top tier open or closed backed headphones that have comfort levels that these do. You get great materials and durability at the cost of being much larger, a lot of added weight, all resulting in more discomfort. Exactly what I donā€™t want. That is why I look for great sounding portable sets.

These sound nothing like the HD58X imo. The kph30i are boomy, bloated, muddy, muffled, and overall unclear in every way. To me they are just bad porta pros. The HD58X has less mid bass but is better extended, the mids are far and away better in every aspect, and the highs have actual definition and are rather well extended. Sound stage and imaging also go clearly to the HD58X, not for a wider stage, but a much more open sounding stage with great imaging. I donā€™t say this because itā€™s a $30 headphone vs a $150 headphone. I say this because even when I compare them to the porta pros and tin t2 the kph30i come out bloodied and beaten. Iā€™ve said it before in this thread, but I just donā€™t understand why some people LOVE the kph30i. The porta pro seem to be the exact same signature, just better.

Personal preference, sometimes people say better about headphones but most of the time they compare very different headphones that do different things but still gonna call one better than another
Thatā€™s kinda ignorant imo.
Most of the time its like saying NBA is better than fifa
I think kph30i are very good for the price I enjoy them but beside being nice because of the Walkman vibe I canā€™t say that they do anything better than what I already experienced.
They are not portable either imo cuz you gonna hear everything around you and that gonna ruin all the sound.

But NBA is way better than fifaā€¦
I agree with you, except that the term ā€œgod-tierā€ is used too loosely with inexpensive Koss. Invites comparisons.

The Koss range do offer incredible sounding drivers for the price, especially considering you have popular more expensive alternatives like Grado E series, SR60,80,125 all getting pissed over by the the cheap little Koss in terms of all-round better sound. Itā€™s an achievement indeed.

That being said, it was possible to get better sound and build qaulity than the Koss range at the Koss price just a few years ago with the PX-100 II. Truly incredibly little pair of headphones. Sennheiser were fucking crazy to stop making them. Probably becuase these actually DO sound better than the HD58x, and also every other headphone they currently make sub Ā£200.

@ServedHot
I realize what I wrote wasnā€™t exactly clear.
I didnā€™t mean that the Koss competes with the 58X, it doesnā€™t. It has a similar sound signature/tonality, as in warm bass and smooth mids and highs with no frequency peaks. Obviously in terms of technical performance, the 58X is much better. And that does also have to do with limitations of the small on ear design. But it does sound better than the KSC75 and Porta Pro to me, as well as many IEMs costing much more.

Donā€™t worry I was just saying in general, Ive seen multiple people to compare them with 58x, usually they call them baby 58x, or some would even say I have these these and these headphones and now that I got kph30i I look at all of them and I ask myself why do I have all of this.
I feel like people are overselling them to much.
Good headphones but camonā€¦
K371 were special in bed theseā€¦ Are just normal.

So I got a replacement pair of 30iā€™s today, while shuffling on foobar this came up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ClCaPmAA7s
and it may be my new track to show these off to people.
The imaging on the drums is superb and in the heavier sections it doesnā€™t seem to lose detail in any part of the mix. Speaking of those heavier sections they absolutely thump!

Other opinions much welcome!

Looks sleek, is this a part swap from other colors or a custom paint job?

Iā€™ve also said that I feel like my pair is a lemon, but at the same time nothing seems broken, so I have no clue. I really like the porta pros though.

Grabbed some 2-pin and mmcx adapters but Iā€™m just going to go with fixed cable. Much more durable and theyā€™re not being used for portable use anyway. If you donā€™t care about the original pads, I highly recommend cutting them off so you can see exactly where the clips are that you need to press. More likely to brake them trying to feel around for it.

The silicone strap was taken from the beige colored KPH30i. The silicone sides I painted, and the pads are black YAXI pads.

@kcrack so there is a way to safely remove the silicone strap! Mind sharing some tips?

Iā€™ve been trying to do it too so I could spray paint and sand my repaired headband cos the epoxy job i did is pretty messy.
Also like to try something like this from Z:

I have no idea how the headband didnā€™t snap with that middle bend lol?

The silicone strap is held in place with an oval hook. Just unhook it. Zeos used a heat gun to melt his headband.

Could someone link me the video of V modding his pair, please.
Can only find the review in his channel
