I would not go with hexOS; if you dont mind paying for the OS I would go with unraid for sure.
Otherwise if you want free consider TrueNAS (hexos is based on), OpenMediaVault or CasaOS.
Na for the NAS i already have a case for that, some no name brand M-ATX case that im going to put a 3d printer HDD caddy since it has a lot of free space in it.
Iv’e tried messing around in the past with sort of stuff and got a bit overwhelmed, im mostly a hardware guy (i think it was TrueNas but it was a while ago). so im things will be simpler with HexOS (i already bought it since i like the basic idea of it), i know its still in beta but i think its worth a try
One i buy all of the hard drives and the network cards get here ill consider it.
Funny thing i spent an hour or so trying to troubleshoot it, Turns out everything seems to works great, except one small part… The front IO, that includes the power button… but if you use the jumpers it all works fine - So i ordered an external power button off aliexpress
64GB of RAM is definitely overkill for most gaming, but if your PC is also a workstation or part of your home / test lab, then it’s probably just right.
the 5800X3D is still a very potent CPU and paired with a RTX 3080, there is very little reason to upgrade your PC. AM4 boards are very affordable, so if you want to reduce your case footprint, then getting a solid mATX, or possible even ITX board with the X570 chipset would be quite affordable.
now, if you have money to burn and just want something newer, I’m more than happy to share my thoughts, but with a rig as good as what you have right now, there’s a lot of other cool stuff (AUDIO! AUDIO! AUDIO!) you could look at.
one…maybe two slots, generally a PCIe x2 slot. ITX exist for a reason and they’re so popular that they often command a premium price too.
@CTOXmas the latest iteration of MS Flight Sim is supposed to hit upwards of 42GB with everything turned to max @ 4K. that’s probably why they came out with non-binary RAM! buuut, 2x 24GB (48GB) kits usually cost more than 2x 32GB (64GB) kits. non-binary RAM is best because 48GB sticks ARE less than 64GB sticks, but the bigger selling point is very few boards are rated for 64GB sticks. with teh popularity of 48GB DIMM though, they have better availability for the top end performance boards taht can max out at 256GB instead of the previous 192GB…which is oodles better than the previous max of 128GB.
Yeah that is way too little and they usually have like 2 ram slots instead of 4 and not many nvme slots either…
Dont think they are worth the relatively small (no pun intended) size difference with mATX.
Not to mention the worse airflow → more fan speed needed → louder. As well as the natural disadvantage of a smaller case being louder overall…(acoustics)
In most cases its the ITX tax that’s the bigger issue, everything just cost more, from the cases, the PSUs, the motherboards, hell even finding the right cooler can be an issue. The lack of certain features is a bummer but most folks can mange without it (Normally they have 2-3 nvme slots same as ATX).
Iv’e built a few system noise hasnt been an issue from my experience, if you plan things out correctly and tune the fan curve correctly
Thank you, I will keep that in mind. For now I am not sure when will I able to get a new AM5 build for I’ve just recently bought a new phone after all. But I will keep that recommendation in mind.
