Let's talk about computers

At this point I’m stuck on… Well, what else fits the performance/budget/aestetic I want? I’ve got Gigabyte and ASRock to look at for Motherboards… And I’m looking through my options, annnnnnnnndddddd… FUCK…

As a person who’s built 3 computers in the last year and done way more research into this stuff than I’m willing to admit, at some point you realize every component vendor has its flaws.

For motherboard vendors off the top of my head:
Gigabyte - Worst RMA team ever
Asus - Overpriced incompetence
MSI - Shady behind-the-scenes dealings
Asrock - Cheap components, poor price/performance usually
EVGA - What’s an AMD? (they make good GPUs though)

Even then it’s still: AMD? Who dat?

I guess I am going to stick with MSI for my B450M Bazooka plus has been doing me well.

The dremel some holes to fix thermals… I am very close to doing the same mod to my HP notebook.
Removing the optical drive improves thermals by 15°C

Sapphire for AMD GPUs

I just avoid AMD GPUs. Way too many driver issues. And no, AMD’s “FineWine” is not good enough.

For the hours I clock in on Linux, AMD is better.

And my workloads don’t need CUDA, so YMMV

What driver issues??? From the pcs ive built using 5800xts and stuff and amd gpus in past ive had 0 driver issues. Ive had more with nvidia and ive had my fair share from both vendors. I just dont get the saying amd has bad drivers as not had it personally.

I agree there aren’t driver issues like I had when I had my NVIDIA card years ago, but AMD is usually not as optimized by game designers so it’s not just AMD putting out drivers you have to worry about. I still can’t get RD2 to run consistently

Sigh… here’s the fuss about the 5700XT. Keep in mind this is a GPU that released in July 2019. If your GPU takes almost a year after launch to run smoothly, I am not interested.

and the fuss about the 5600XT related to VBIOS

Oh, and driver issues still persist on r/AMD. Like all the time:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/gy04vx/q320_tech_support_megathread/

And yes I’ve have black screens and BSODs. Not delving any further into this.

I had a notebook a long while ago with an AMD APU and AMD GPU, the driver would regularly crap out and recover after a 2 second black screen. Kind of scary the first few times, got used to it and the last update before EOL fixed that behaviour.

Keep in mind Nvidia is 13.3k people most working on GPUs, AMD is 11k working on GPUs, CPUs and semi-custom chips. Market share also plays its role.

Want me to dig out articles about Nvidia drivers shutting off the fan when reaching 85°C?

I am part of 3 tech forums filled with issues about EVERY SINGLE company that makes any sort of PC related hardware. From Korean monitors with stuck pixels, fan failures in corsair cases, broken RGB controlers, DOA Display ports, missing M.2 stand offs and more.

What is your point?

This may seem overly harsh, I am just so tired of the main argument against any of the big three desktop parts makers being “they have issues” as if that was a unique problem.

I never claimed Nvidia (or any company) is some saint in regards to drivers. I’m going off my experience and research. And are you just going to ignore my videos I linked? Sigh.

My point is I will go with what works for me. I experienced AMD driver issues like many others. Troubleshooted, didn’t help. Switched to an Nvidia GPU and they went away. My experience.

Of course other people will have their own separate issues. This is tech 101. Just like anything else, YMMV.

I mean isnt an item expected to have issues on launch as there is no way the bug team can find all errors and such. As well as AMD was spending most of their resources i can bet fighting intel at that point. U must give amd credit where its due they have so many less employees compared to intel, nvidia yet they still manage to be competative in all those markets. And i aint no amd fan boy or anything in the computer indusry fanboyism is rediculous as the companys dont care.

Ive ownd at lot from all sides from intel, amd, nvidia and not just cheap shit. I can say not one of them were perfect but in my experience ive had to fix more nvidia driver isses than amds. Singleing one or two cards out, does not mean the whole companys drivers are shite.

haha I got a good laugh out of that.

Must say i miss me me good old antec cases. Still have my antec 900 from 2006 only just upgraded. It was such a badarse case for the time.

Indeed. I went from Antec to several different Fractal Design and later Corsair Carbide Air. Most likely going for something completely different next build as the whole field seems to be a bit of a eh, clusterfuck. Some cases just seem to ignore airflow altogether, which makes it kind of funny when they mount AIO’s against blocked off sides or fronts (looking at you, NZXT).

Buddy was messaging me about his gf’S PC over heating and thus BSOD’s. I went to check it out just a ryzen 2600 on stock cooler system itself is virtually dust free. Im like yikes but Ive ran the stock cooler before on ryzen 5s and didnt get absurd. run aida 64 wait 10 minutes thing maxed @ 95 degrees C and stable at 93 that is by far the highest I’ve seen a ryzen cpu go. we ended up ordering a noctua nhd 15 chromax. but Jesus they should have shipped that cpu with at least a wraith spire not a wraith stealth.

Antec made some nice cases, then failed to update and missed some trends. Damn shame.

My next build is likely going to be in a Supermicro case and cooled with Noctua or Delta fans, the rest is one big question mark.

might as well go all out and run threadripper
