Let's talk about computers

Well, main workstation is-

  • AMD Threadripper 1920X
  • 72Gbytes ECC memory
  • 512Gb Samsung SSD 970 PRO for the operating system
  • 6 x 4TB of spinning rust as the main storage (ZFS pool)
  • 4 x 224GB Toshiba SATA SSDs and 2x Samsung SATA SSDs as ZFS “special” cache.
  • AMD ATI Radeon Pro WX 5100 with 5120x2160, 3840x2160 displays
  • Topping DX7s for music connected to a M1060 headphone or a Yamaha soundbar (am I about to be banned?).

This isn’t for games (although it does that half-way well); to give a hint I’ve been running John the Ripper solidly for about 2 weeks (pegging all cores at 100% constantly). There’s also an ancient Macbook Pro (from work), two old ThinkPads, and a more modern Xiami mini laptop. All except for the Macbook run Linux, although there’s a few Windows VMs on the main machine.

I’d be very nervous about using compressed air because it’s not just air, and it’s very variable. I’ve heard some horror stories amongst the photographic community about camera sensors being damaged. I’d stick to a rocket blower (a handheld/pumped blower shaped like a rocket) or an air blower.

Well the prices seem to be a bit better than anticipated.
3080 for $699, 3070 for $499. Still expensive, but if there’s a nice bundled game I dunno… I mean… Who knows…

Im happy with the prices to say the 3070 is better than a 2080ti and half the price im happy

For anyone who missed it

Are they?
They just moved everything down a notch and bolted the xx90 on top.

Did they announce anything else, or just “here are some GPUs with a wierd 12-pin” ?

Ahhh so me selling my 2080ti for decent money seems to be less likely than i thought.

Well I, and I know I’m not the only one, did not expect the msrp to be lower than the previous launch, so they are a bit better.

Only the 3090 has the 12pin. The GPUS are miles better than 2000. Announced DLSS 2.0 Some broadcaster stuff and machinae stuff too. And something that makes the GPU interact with the storage instead of CPU to increase load times, similar to PS5. And some other stuff for reduced latency in games.

And UK price im happy with

I’m pretty sure they are factoring in ray tracing with that. Without it, it’s likely much less impressive

Have to see what AMD bring out with Big navi but this was big

I see what youre saying with price. As someone who builds 1 pc to last 5 years + the 3090 is something i crave but man is it more expensive than i imagined, but as expected as it was said its really replacing the titan. Looks like its time to wait for the suplimental “super” or “ti” cards. Or the inevitable amd announcements that shake pricing a little.

But if the 3070 does indeed pass a 2080ti for less than half the price then its very interesting.

I just feel there is a big performance leap forward here due to 20xx series cards being a bit mehhhh

Why would MSI, SeaSonic and a third PSU maker then leak adapters for the 12-pin thing?
Wierd…

3rd party benchmarks

Vaseline on screen-mode was fun the first time round. Let’s hope they improved on it.

AMD Vega had that aswell. Did not matter ever because nobody used it. Maybe Nvidia sticking cash and engineers into developers helps.

Quick reminder:

And for the 30-series:

The 3090 isnt for gamers tho thats the thing. So ill just ignore that. But they showed it playing 8k 60fps with RTX on. So damn

Yeah I really wish there was a 3080 Ti. I don’t need anything thing close to 24 Gb of vram lol

Yeah obvisously wait for benchmarks but all im saying is it looks good  Also the cards comes with adapters anyway so no need for the new psu’s. But people will buy them XD

3080 seems good enough for me 4k 60 with RTX on.

I am part of several computer hardware forums, the panic is insane…
I need more popcorn.

Mmmm. Finally I can start to think about building a new PC. 4790K + GTX980 are showing their age on 1440p@165Hz

Haha i be getting a new PSU as i need one mines nearing 5 years but probably wont buy a nvidia 12pin one.

Yeah fxaa off always even if i have to break a config for it. More and more like to sneak bad aa with a general post processing option or just forcing it and its eye cancer.

At 1440p aa is much less needed and soon resolutions may be high enough we can trash the smudgy options 100%
