Let's talk about computers

Some quick thoughts on this keyboard if anyone is interested…

I came from a board with Cherry MX Blue switches. Those switches are great for physical comfort but clickety-clackety as all hell. I really like the tactile feel of them tho and just learned to live with the fact that everyone in the house knew I was typing. The optical-mechancial switches on this board are very quiet - they might be even quieter than most membrane keyboards at that. The most notable sound is a metallic ring of the springs pushing the caps back up…but it’s very quiet. I don’t hear this one above my headphones like ever, where I used to hear the blue switches almost all the time. They aren’t quite as satisfying to press as the MX Blue switches, but they’re growing on me. By feel it’s almost like the characters are rolling out instead of being hammered out…if that makes any kind of sense. This keyboard also has lots of light settings, both color and brightness, for those who are into that sort of thing. So, it’s growing on me. It looks cool, it’s well made, and the feel seems like something I could get used to and appreciate over the long haul. It’s still under $53 when it’s normally $110 if anyone is still interested.

Yeah, if you can touch-type I think linear/optical switches are actually better than tactile/clicky. You don’t get the feedback, sure, but it feels like you’re typing words rather than letters. It’s kinda like superlight mice. At first they feel like they’ll fly out of your hand every time, but when you get used to it you’ll be more precise than you ever could be with a weighted mouse.

so we’re going to get a really bad GPU shortage that includes any GPU using GDDR6 as all the product manufactured has been used up and no more to be found. the forecast I read said this should ease and get better in February.

I have Kailh Speed Silvers, and for that exact reason.

wooo! just secured a Ryzen 5 5600X!

Congrats! It’s such a mess at the moment. I tried a week or two ago and gave up when the order was cancelled.

I was fortunate…a member on a forum I frequent placed back orders across several stores and he got a notification of his 5600X being ready, while he had already gotten one from another store. so he put a post up on the forum and I was the first respondent.

Awesome!

I just got lucky when I thought “why not check on the 5800X”. More money, but still a single chiplet. I just finished ordering all the other parts to build the new computer I’ve been waiting ages for… Fingers crossed (or thumbs pressed, as the Germans say) it all arrives before Christmas, since there’s a full lockdown here and I can’t see family or friends, so I need something to do.

Had to get an RTX 2080 instead of the 3070 that I wanted, but as we know with HiFi, one can always upgrade
Nope, even that’s out of stock or nearly €1k everywhere

This talk got me a little interested… Only it acually went somewhere, and I’m not 100% sure how I feel about the outcome. Ran the built in benchmark in CPU-Z and ran validation:

I’ll admit, I also spent a few hours dialing in an OC JTC style (Afterburner and Heaven), then ran validation on GPU-Z:

I don’t think the CPU is looking bad for what it is, but GPU, I’m guessing (ASIC quality is 73.8%, app claims better then 40.4% of similar GPUs in the validation database) is fairly middle of the road.

That should be good enough to hold you down for a while if you hop on to 1440p if your not on it yet as well

To be honest, I’m either running on a 55" 4K TV, or a 24" 144Hz 1080p IPS monitor. The TV usually gets used for anime, movies, YouTube, general use, and those few games that framerate don’t exactly make that big of a difference (CIV and AOE are just a couple examples). Even then, I sometimes run at 1080p because of how the resolution scales.
Besides, upgrading is a bit out of the question right now given availability and pricing. Not to mention prioritizing a vehicle first.

I secured an RTX 3070!

Looking forward to being able to build a new system next week.

so…I would really love to have the P-ATX as the case for my Ryzen build…but the damned thing is just too expensive. after exchange, I’;d be looking at $300. so…I gave in and bought the Define C Mini. and I want Bluetooth support, so bought the Asus USB-BT500 dongle as well.

sooo…this happened.

Hey all, how are you guys finding hardware?
Trackers are usually late or break and dont report. I have gotten no inventory notifications via the actual sites. Retail sites usually break when drops happen and i cant get back in before they sell out.

Trying to get a 5900x hoping a mobo and r wont sell as fast once listed.

Get excited for technology, not for products.
Being on the bleeding edge is only fun for two, maybe three generations. After that, meh.

I guess I got lucky. I would check my build on pcpartpicker.com everyday, once I saw the CPU available, I grabbed it. First order cancelled, second time lucky. With the graphics card, it was even more luck. I received a dispatch notification from a seller for some other parts at 10pm, which I thought was an odd time (especially here in Germany). I decided to search for the 3070 on their site. Lo and behold, they had some available for a not-terrible price. I was beside myself when the order was confirmed and again once I got the shipping notification. Everything was delivered before Christmas.

But i need to get the product to enjoy the technology. Im building a new computer as mine is 6 years old and is now not keeping up with what i need. The old pc will hopefully be converted to a really nice nas.

I am not rushing or looking to over pay, just seeing what others have done to find things. I could of rebuilt 2 summers ago when i had a 3900x in hand but i decided to wait and i sold that. I do wish i bought a new mobo at the time but i thought even though the socket is the same we may of seen x670 boards.

Im picking up parts where i can with 2 ssds waiting since 2 years ago and on the flip side i cant even get a block manufacturer to respond to a Q about a loose time frame of when theyll be stocked again.

Yeah newer boards are supposed to have better power delivery for the AM4 socket. But seeing that you got a IIRC 3080, 3900x + 2080 build would’ve been pretty decent. Are you air cooling or water cooling, if so AIO or custom loop?

As far as I have seen, now is not an ideal time to upgrade. New parts have been tempting me as well, specially since my rig is 6-7 years old. I’ve seen the cheapest RTX 3060Ti on sale for 600€ which is supposed to be a 400€ MSRP card. And I know MSRP doesn’t mean it’s meant to sell at 400€, but still 50% mark-up is a lot.
