Looking for recomendations on audio(total noob) with a flexible budget $500~

DT1990? I mean stuff like the ad1000x as well imo. Sundara does surprisingly well too

I know but it’s a Beyer I meant beyerdynamics in general are my recc unless you got HD 800s cash cause the imaging on those are great. Haven’t tried the 1000 and I would pick the 880 over the Sundara for imaging

So many times since I use the Dt1990 with my Xbox I’ve heard people hiding in the bushes in Battlefield V… And killed them… :sunglasses:

the ad900x is selling for 150$ though i found their was little clamp on the headband

Almost forgot to ask. The thing with the audible like hissing sound/white noise is that just because I have it too loud? I can hear it mostly when listening to music that happens to have quiet portions or in between words when people speak to me over discord and such.

lol I’ve also now started to notice discord sounds super weird.

Both the headphones and the amp are pretty revealing. There is sort of always a noise floor of some sort with higher end gear that is revealing. Also ask @M0N if you have questions about that.

Essentially yes, the amp is on higher gain so it will also amplify unwanted noise. To really get a portable capable of driving the 880 600 ohm without a hitch whatsoever you would want to look for an ifi idsd micro black label or something of the sort, as the 600 ohms are pretty hungry. If you were bothered you would want to switch to middle gain but you loose some volume. If it’s a large dealbreaker for you I would suggest sending the xd05 plus back and getting a suitable desktop amp, but then you loose out on portability

Ahhh in the first place I wasn’t really looking for portability but since the xduuo does have desktop use I figured it’d be fine if I get something to go out with later down the road.

What are suitable desktop amps/dacs I should look at in the meantime because I would definitely prefer it if I couldn’t hear that hissing as loud when listening to music at the least.

I mean there are a fair bit, something like the schiit magni heresy or asgard 3 will do the job more than well. You can keep the portable and use it as a dac if you want if you got the magni heresy (to stay in some sort of a budget)

You have LOTS of options. But, after listening to the DT880 for awhile with music, what do you think about their treble? Is it sharp? Do you hear frequent overly sibilant sounds - meaning “sssss” or “t” or “ch” sounds? Answering that questions will help you make a good decision about what amp to get. If you hear that treble sharpness and it bothers you, your best option is probably to get a separate DAC and amp with an amp that’s a little warmer sounding with a gentle roll-off in the treble.

Assuming you’re OK with the DT880’s treble performance as is, the entry budget DAC/AMP combo unit would be the Fiio K5 Pro for ~$150. The next combo unit worth considering jumps up to the $350-400 range with the Schiit Asgaard 3 with dac card or the JDS Labs Element II.

For DACs in this price range you should look at the SMSL M100 or Topping D10. For just a little more you could get an iFi Zen dac and have the option of MQA if you ever want to stream Tidal Masters someday. For amps, just about any of the Schiit Magni 3+, Schiit Heresy, JDS Labs Atom, Topping A50, or Geshelli Archel will handle the DT880’s well and give a neutral-to-analytical sound signature - athough Zeos just called the Magni 3+ and A50 warmer units (I can’t comfirm this with my own ears yet).

The Monoprice Monolith Liquid Spark would be your best option to roll off the DT880’s highs if they bother you.

The Schiit Asgaard amp at $200 will also give you all the power you need to explore the world of headphones out there that you’re just entering. It has the muscle to drive pretty much everything no questions asked.

Having just seen @M0N’s reply, it too is a good one. You can keep the XD-05 and use it’s line out to drive any of the amps I just mentioned. Then you have a mobile option and a quiet desktop amp at the ready.

Enjoy!

The element II is a very nice all in one (actually would recommend it more than the A3 with the dac card for the 880 600)

Yes if you have issues with treble the liquid spark will warm up the 880 and also roll of the treble a bit to give it a smoother sound at the expense of a bit of detail

And this is one reason we audiophiles bleed money into this hobby. Do we want rolled-off highs for super enjoyable music listening or do we want brutal honesty with pinpoint imaging for playing games? The answer is yes! And that’s why I have 2 different DACs and 4 different amps sitting on my desk right now and that’s not even my entire collection!

In less than one year you will change the dt990 for a dt1990, get a desktop DAC/amp setup, buy several affordable (200 bucks) headphones more, a Dap and then you will go for a very expensive planar can.

I know because it happened to me lol!

@WaveTheory To answer your question it’s mostly just a low sssss sound. It’s only loud when I’m playing something very loud. Like I can hear it throughout the song but not enough to be super noticeable however if that loud song ever happens to go very quiet for even a moment it rears it’s head and is very audible then for the rest of the song my ears just focus on that.

One of the instrumentals I listened to also had a strange crackly/grainy sound but only when played with the knob at 12 o clock with the middle gain. When i drop it to it’s lowest gain setting I don’t hear that as much. Overall though in games it’s certainly a good match for me so no problems there lol.

Does that happen at normal listening level? Or only when you are really listening loud. Also are you listening to lossless material?

The hiss you’re noticing is not what I’m referring to. It sounds like there is some noise in your signal chain bleeding in. But, since you’re not getting what I’m saying I’m guessing you’re not noticing it as a problem. The “s” noises I’m talking about are not a signal noise problem, they’re an artifact of some headphones having a bit of a peak in the 8-12Khz range. It’s a sonic trait called “sibilance”. Again, since you’re not complaining about that you’re probably not noticing it. So a neutral-to-analytical amp will work well for you.

At normal listening levels it’s only slight. When I’m listening loud I can hear it throughout the song. I’m listening to my youtube playlists.

Gotcha, ok then, that’s just the noise floor. Yeah getting something like a magni heresy or liquid spark and using your xduoo as a dac would be an effective solution imo. Or you could just go full desktop
