Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee Headphones

I agree they aren’t stylish or luxurious, but they are durable, comfortable and sound good.

I don’t know… Can it even be measured, for headphones?
If I trust the sound level meter in my room, 90dB is painful for me, with speakers. So, yeah, lower than that. I also went to a lot of metal shows and it was always a bit too loud for me (but never painful – otherwise I’d wear earplugs or GTFO).

I believe some amps have a dB scale tied to their volume dial. But there are also smartphone apps that measure loudness. I had one on my Android phone. Thought it was useful until I noticed that it never showed a higher number than 80 dB no matter how high I cranked my headphone, lol.

IAC, I ask because I’m curious about the relationship between treble sensitivity and listening loudness. The Fletcher-Munson / equal loudness curves tell us that bass and treble loudness requires more sound pressure to achieve the louder we listen.

If we knew at what loudness levels people listen to we might find a meaningful correlation to their preference for the sort of recessed upper mids that we find in Audeze headphones and in the 58X over the 650 and the 650 over the 600. This would be useful in making buying decisions and in recommending headphone models here on the forum.

I bought a cheap decibel meter from Amazon, just to see if I was listening too loud.
I put a piece of cardboard (with a small hole cut in the middle) over one cup and stick the head of the meter through. My chosen listening level works out to a max of 76/77 decibels. Most of the music in in the 65 to 75db range. I just track the max numbers it hits.

It is great for volume matching when you are comparing headphones or amps, which I seem to be doing constantly.

P.S. : I only paid $25.00 and would recommend one to any hardcore listener. If you screw up your hearing, you will never get it back.

Lol, I typically don’t listen that loud for most music listening, but for studio work I listen around 85-90db lol. It’s really what you want for studio critical listening levels, even though it can be loud at times. But don’t do that for regular listening, it’s not needed

So, what is your sitting back in the lazy boy listening level?

Pretty much around the 75 db and 80db if I really want to jam out

Don’t worry, the music I listen to with my headphones is way quieter than the metal shows I go to… :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, I hear more bass with my left ear, and more high treble with my right ear, so if a show is too loud one day, there’s a 50% chance my ears get equal, lol!

I am new to higher end headphones so i’m going to explain it in the only way I can and use examples that I had on hand to compare to.

The midrange is very well defined and so is the treble. The bass reminds me of the Ikko OH10 very precise not muddy It’s Crispy. I like the bass on them more then my DT770 Pro 250Ohm. They feel like they have a comparable soundstage to my Ikko OH10 and I enjoy how Instruments are layered out for you. If this is what imaging is wow… It takes what the Ikko’s have going for them and turns it up a notch.

Hooked up to the Little Bear B4X Portable amp adds this butter smooth warmth to them and wakes them up a bit.

I’m excited to see if eq’ing them makes them even better. First pair of open backs I am quite pleased with what these can do. They make my DT770 Jealous.

I’m gonna have to get Hart Cable soon…
