🔷 Meze 99 Classic/Neo/Noir

For portable, I personally prefer the 1More Triple Driver, Sony MDR-1A for bassy cans, or in a higher price bracket the Campfire Audio Cascades.

what was it about them you didnt like?

yeah i have these and they are very good headphones. but they’er on ear.

Ive heard of these, are they dark?

The MDR-1A (1st gen) are warm and bassy. Probably not sharp enough in the treble for you’re tastes IMO. But for a portable, they work well as they are light, comfortable, easy to drive, etc.

Way too much treble. If I want to have a listening session of more than hour, I need to EQ or use a very “soft” amp.

The word piercing comes to mind.

That sounds attractive to me I’m missing a sickiningly bassy headphone in the collection

I know some people like to complain about the treble response on them

Just found this review at Resolve Reviews. I love the way this guys describes the bass on these. the way people talk about it you get the impression its out of control. And its always bugged me cause i never perceived that about this headphone. ive always liked the bass. im not a basshead but i do love bass in a headphone. And i love these headphones. I got the Nior. And i think this is the best closed back at this price point $200. Anyway check it out and also he has some pad recommendations at the end of the video. Some of them bring down the bass.

Its too bad about that silent pad revision as it seems the old ones were a nice match

My oldest set of headphones are my Meze 99 Classic’s (I won’t count my ten year old Bose 'phones as I haven’t travelled in nine years ).

I have always enjoyed them as my out about headphones and for lunch hours at work. I have always said, and believed, that these headphones do not scale up, but I was wrong. With a proper tube amp, the sound improves noticeably. Instruments seem more spread out and the bass cleans up and focuses.

There are like the Liquid Spark in that they are so cheap and so good it just doesn’t make sense to ever sell them, IMO.

The old ones for me was :scream: horrible. They had no firmness. So your ear rested on the speaker and they sounded just bad. The other pads are a little bigger but firmer. and they sounded great with these. I would really like to swap some more pads with these but im not sure which. Like he said in the video i would like some that are the right size.

Wow, i gotta try them on my darkvoice then :grinning: i got mine for 160$ on drop

You may not care for the results. I bought a low impedance tube amp, so they sound Great.

On all my other SS and hybrid amps, I was never impressed.

What amp is it?

I bought an amp aimed at my 32 Ohm Grado’s. My research got down to:

  1. Mapletree Audio Design in Canada - Ear+ HD II
    And
  2. Hagerman Audio in Hawaii - Tuba

While they are similar in some ways, I chose MAD because they were cheaper, they are Canadian and the builder listens to Grado’s. But I think that the Tuba is likely as good, if not better. I like buying from mom and pop operations when I can. I had my own business for fourteen years and I know what goes into it.

Either amp is a nice get for very efficient headphones. Mine also worked wonders on the HD600!

But they do have a different sound to them in terms of signature and what they do imo, both are pretty great

I corrected my post!

Mine are supposed to ship today!

Just saw this headphone. looks like Microsoft ripped off Meze’s design lol:
