Looks like they reduced nozzle damping and reduced DD vent damping.

So while u could probably get closer to the OG one with 1k+ area with added nozzle damping. You would need to open it to increase the damping on the DD vent.

I appreciate the expertise!

So if I understand rightly, just adjusting the nozzle damping would result in still having an elevated low end?

Exactly. You might risk the bass shelf as a whole being increased a bit depending on what you do with the nozzle as well. Since you are reducing the airflow by blocking it off with more damping.

Tbh a DM with elevated bass doesnā€™t sound like a loss to meā€¦ food for thought for now!

Feel like Iā€™m past the honeymoon phase on the OG DM. Definitely going to say itā€™s the best single DD IEM Iā€™ve heard to date for my preferences and library. Even further it so far appears, after a lot of A/Bing to other favorites, it may go down as my favorite IEM to date. Absolutely in my top 3 for best all arounders. Midbass and mids presentation is truly something special. Paired with smooth fatigue free treble these are a game changer for me. DM is the first IEM to bring me back towards the beginning of my IEM journey hearing the UP.

You cant. They made internal differences and without opening it, you cant.

Redeyes has been trying for months now.

Thanks for the certainty! Keep this fool safe.

Edit alsoā€¦. WHY? Why take everyoneā€™s favorite IEM and change a damn thing? Itā€™s not worth anything now, at least certainly not what the OG was. Stupid.

Iā€™m still loving my OG DM on a daily basis, and Iā€™m quite happy with it overall.

Wifeā€™s bday is in a few weeks so I picked up a Monarch mk2 IEM and a Sony NW-WM1ZM2 DAP. I look forward to testing the DM on the Sony DAP, as well as seeing how the DM compares to this legendary mk2. Iā€™m excited to add to our repertoire!!!

I love how your wifeā€™s bday present sounds more like a Milkman present

Fortunately it is exactly what she wants and Iā€™ve already got what I want. Its weird when male and female partners like the same thing, eh? lol The western world has fallen ohnoesss!

Our Dark Magician saga continues. Ill post more about these items in another thread, but I also wanted to comment about my new DAPs and IEMs here because they relate to my experience with the DM.

We just picked up 2x Shangling M3X units (for the kids) and 1x Sony Walkman WM1AM2 (for her) and 1x Thieaudio Monarch MK2 (mentioned above, for her).

Iā€™ll leave some feedback for the M3X DAPs soon, but we havent really used them yet because they are Xmas presents for the kids! However the WM1AM2 + DM Im here to talk about. We tried to get the Sony NW-WM1ZM2 but were not able to because there was no stock. Nobody anywhere had this device, so we went with the $1300 WM1AM2 instead of the $3600 1ZM2. (I think about it all the time, none the less)

The DAP instantly elevates our IEM and headphone game, as expected. Iā€™ll be honest ā€“ I am on the fenceā€¦ between the DM and the MK2. I will explain. There are things I like about both. I will write more about what we did to test the DAP and IEMs elsewhere, but I can summarize by saying the warmth and punch of the DM feels heavier and beefier, but not by a lot, over the MK2. The MK2 is precise, expansive, and holographic in a way that places it a(small) notch above the DM, but I feel like the DM is a really fun daily driver sort of IEM that makes my music sound more the way I like it.

This also reveals my own taste, which is that the warmth and slam of a track is almost more important to me than precision and space. ALMOST. =P I wish the MK2 had a littttttle bit more slam and beef, and then it would be perfect imo. However: tips! We have bought comply, spinfit, and used the tips included with our IEMs (silicone and memory foam, 1 each). The memory foam tips on the MK2 seem to be the reason why the slam/beef is a little reduced over the DM. The DM currently have Spinfit W1 installed. When I put those same tips on the MK2, it beefs up a little. Tips make a big difference!

DM stands up well against other IEMs (for me, having only tried 3 so far haha) and really comes to life with a better DAP or DAC. The L&P W2 is great, but the Sony DAP smokes it in terms of pretty much everything and this is the DAP we were waiting for to really see what our Dark Magician could do! : )

I have the DM (revision) and by far out of all the iemā€™s I have had these are just amazing. They do vocals in such an intimate way that I just donā€™t want to take them out. Hot damn, I wish more people would get a chance to listen to the OG and Revision.

It cannot be overstated how much it sucks that the OG DM isnā€™t being produced anymore. This IEM is the equivalent of watching 3D IMAX.

Itā€™s got a theatre sound with shit flying all around you. Itā€™s got BA level imaging and staging but with supercharged DD coherency and dynamism. All done with the most perfect, emotionally intimate mids I ever heard.

Absolutely incredible.

Your probably going to have to be the one letting us know if the Simgot EM500 gets us a taste of that Dark Magic! Cheers TDM.

I can already pretty much confirm the EA500 isnā€™t a mini-DM. Itā€™s too energetic in the upper-midrange/treble.

But fear not, I think thereā€™s a different comparison that may be relevant

Bad news Good news ok. I have a EA500 incoming so it is what it is but nice to be different from all the other Harman Tuned fish.
TDM.

I havenā€™t heard Illumination, but EA500 has to be closer to that than Dark Magician. It isnā€™t as smooth as DM, but I imagine that EA500 is more a taste of Illumination

Cheaper stuff ā€¦
