šŸ”· Modhouse ARGON MkIII

Thank you! I will wait patiently.

Lol, I’ll try, I’m not the most discerning person when it comes to audio.

What game is this btw? Looks a little like a D3 clone.

Livelock. Fun sounding.

Tried asking elsewhere and contacting modhouse but no answers so far. I’m running a Monoprice 11567 with the sdac, will this setup be able to run the Argon with any success? I’ve heard mixed reviews on the power hungry nature of it with some people saying the o2 is enough to power it and some saying that level of juice just isn’t enough. the o2 is rated for 613mw at 33ohms while the monoprice is rated at >900mw at 32 ohms so am hoping it would be enough but don’t want to buy a $300 pair of headphones that I can’t even run.

I think it would get the job done, but in the future you might want a higher quality amp imo. The o2 can also run them but it’s not as ideal. Both will get loud, but with more power the frequency response events out and dynamic range increases, and it just gets more impact

As of now I’ve only been running tin p1s and 58x on them so haven’t even had to consider a new amp until I started looking for a closed back more bass emphasized pair of headphones. As far as upgrading the amp, most amps I see online with substantially more power are over twice the price so was hoping it could wait a bit haha.

Yeah I think when you upgrade something like the schiit asgard 3 would be a good choice to upgrade, but for now the monoprice will make do :+1:

Ok, had a listen and here is my unprofessional opinion. To double check, I also rewatched the Inception trailer for the BRAAMM haha.

Argons have more thump and rumble. The guns sound more impactful. On the other hand, I think the Nighthawk sounds clearer so the melee whoosh is sharper (airier?) on them. The whoosh on the Argons is more meaty and duller.

Nighthawk has a kinda 3d, cavernous soundstage. Argon soundstage is very left-right wide.

I think I prefer the Argons for chunky, satisfying sounds. Immersion may be better on Nighthawks.
Other factors to consider of course are Argon’s wait time, higher price, and being harder to drive. There are other headphones that may fit your needs too but I assume you narrowed it down to these two.

Apologies for the non-audiophile words.
Side note: I don’t know how people avoid confirmation bias, I tried my best to be objective.

You did a fantabulous job, thank you so much! If you have other favorite headphones to test the video clip with and recommend them please do so. You proved my initial hunch about the Argon MK3 being meatier. Then you say the Nighthawk is more immersive. Ahhhh…I own 4 open-back cans for competitive gaming and are very thin sounding and I am craving a closed or semi-closed can that is meaty but not muddy for single player gaming.

Which pads do you have on your Argons?

Unfortunately, I haven’t had much time to play games after I got these headphones, though dying to try. I do play primarily single player games and I think generally I’d lean towards Nighthawk for FPS and third person, and Argons for other genres (I think it would be super awesome to play Diablo with Argons).

Regarding FPS and third person though, for my personal preference, I would probably use Argons to play, for example, Gears of War (the chainsaw), CoD (gunshots and explosions), Sekiro (deathblows), Diablo (shit happening all the time) because it would sound so visceral and satisfying. Conversely, I would use Nighthawks to play Breath of the Wild, Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, and Bioshock. Maybe that helps?

Argons have protein pads, Nighthawks have suede pads, both were hooked up balanced to THX 789 + SU8.

Edit: I saw that you asked about Witcher 3 on the Nighthawk thread. Haven’t had time to play that, but I would probably lean towards Nighthawk for Witcher 1, because I don’t recall the combat really benefiting from impactful bass and it’d be more immersive.
Honestly though, I’m not that picky and I’d be happy with either.

That’s going to be awesome! That Black Label is the next thing I want to save up for in audio gear. It would be an all-in-one solution for me!
How do you like yours?

It has exceeded my expectations. It really can do it all. I plan on using it mainly as a desktop solution. The fact i can walk away with it is the biggest appealing factor. Being able to sit in front of my TV with an optical plugged in is amazing. Also Argons on the go and for flights will be a fun thing to be able to do. The best way i can say it is ā€œit is everything i have heard/read about it and moreā€.

Hey Soren, I want to say I saw a Black Label on /AVExchange. If you are interested, I would browse through it and see if it works out.
