🔷 Modhouse ARGON MkIII

i dont realy know. my gole is to end up with one realy grate set of headphones that will last me a realy long time provided i look after them. Argons sound super cool but if I need a chunky 300$ amp in my pocket then Its probly not what im looking for.
Thanks

Btr5 or a qudelik 5k can drive them balanced but not Shure if you get everything out of the Argons
Otherwise a xduoo xd05 class like amp should suffice ( so a clunky one :stuck_out_tongue: ) or a more powerful dap cause lots of people say you’ll need 1w of power to drive them properly but I think 500mw could also do the trick if it has to be portable
A 3k is definitely not enough even balanced cause I did try it and it did make the t60rp sound sibilant

sorry if this is a silly question but what is it I woldent be geting out of them. is the difrence between a btr5 and the next step up just the last 5% or is it something my untraned ears wont evan notice. the only headphone i have ever had is m50x.
also if you have any dap recomendations i wold love to know.
Thanks

For iem the difference between a btr5 and a good dap is maybe 10% but for Argons it’s more the power difference that matters if Argons don’t get enough juice they will sound sibilant and won’t have that lovely bass
But if you want to know more about dap better ask @Ohmboy or someone else with more experience in that regard
And for a good beginner dap i have my eyes on the shanglin m3x but maybe some has a better recommendation ?

ok thanks i think im starting to understand it a bit better. so i gess my question shold be: whats the chepised portable option to power argons so thay sound good (for my untraned ears).
thanks and sorry for all the beginer questions i didnt evan know what a dap was untill now.

Xduoo XD 05 basic for 120€ or so and if you want Bluetooth an extra 50€ for that module
If I’m not wrong it has 500mw power and if you want to be on the safe side the xduoo xd05 pro for 200€ has 1w
Those are the cheapest option that come to my mind right now at least

Just remembered the ifi hip DAC should also do the trick but all in all I’m not Shure if the Argons are the best HP for portable use if you tell us what you want to upgrade from your mx50 maybe we can find a HP or iem for you that’s more portable

yea i think it might be looking that way. I was also looking at the dt 177x and 99 neo. Im not interested in iem but wold love other recomendations.

So from your choices i would say you like your bass :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
What kind of music do you listen to and any other experience with HP than the Mx50?
And how important is comfort for you/ how long do you plan to listen to them :face_with_monocle:

I lissen to all genre i think. and yes i tend to lissen to music all day. never used any other headphone im afrade.
thanks

Hm, all your recommendations are valid options if you want ultimate comfort look for used Dan Clark aeon RT closed most say those are the most comfortable HP they ever had, sound wise they should be Harman tuned so more or less neutral with slight Bass shelf but think you’ll need at least a btr5 balanced to drive them so the 177x or meze neo/noir could be better for portable use;)

Campfire Cascade would also be a good fit but those are a bit more pricey :money_mouth_face:

between the 177x, argons and aeon rt, witch do you think is regarded as sounding best?
thanks

Ah the most feared question XD and like always it depends :stuck_out_tongue:
First things first i do not have any of those HP so take my impressions with a huge grain of salt
I only have modded t60rp a collection of different beyers (770 880 990 tygr ) and want to take a look at the top models and the aeon RT are also on my list

None of those HP are the best in technicalitys or have the most details retrieval or the best timbre
But everyone does somethings better than the other

Argons give you bass quantity and soundstage with a tamed treble response
The 177x are the Beyer v shape with what I heard tamed Beyer peaks and lots of bass
Aeon RT give you that planar bass slam but less quantity of it and are otherwise more Harman tuned so you won’t run into the possible treble problems the other two could give you and like I said they’re an all day set of cans ^^

But maybe someone else here has more experience with those exact HP and can help you more, or you simply create a topic and ask specific this question

If you don’t want an amplifier then the DT 177X, I have a pair and they sound good powered from any source. If you don’t mind an amplifier then the planars might have better resolution.

I have a T50RP but not an Argon or an Aeon.

What are you looking for in a headphone; specific signature, resolution, comfort, etc? If you prioritise one of those or if you like a certain type of sound then we can guide you to one or the other or even suggest something else that would suit your preference.

yea im leaning towords the 177x.
I listen to all kinds of music but not super critacly.
I dont realy know what kind of sound I like, im unable to try diferent headphones becose of lockdown. I do like base and I realy like lisening to good singers. sorry i dont realy know how to describe my prefrence more then that.
I tend to have headphones on all day, at home and walking/ bussing/ studying at uni, so something kinda comfy. Also probably no big chunky portable amp.

sorry if that is super vage. I dont realy want to go down the audeo rabit hole just have one splash on something real cool that i can injoy for a long time.
thanks

Based on that I would think it be a choice between the 177X and Meze 99.

The Meze has more bass, is more comfortable and easier to drive (the device output does not need to be as high to get to the same level). The more focus on the bass will mean that it can be worn for longer durations without any fatigue but it can over power some of the other frequencies.

The 177X has more clarity in terms of detail and is more suited for guitars and vocals. It still has bass but not as much as the Meze. It is also easy to drive. The sound of this is an overall pleasing signature.

The 177X feels better built but I haven’t had issues with either. The Beyerdynamic are built like a tank though.

I would personally take the 177X (I have both) as a more general all rounder and better built headphone for everyday usage. But it’s up to you in the end, we can help with any questions or recommendations. In the end enjoy the music.

If you have other questions on either of these I would move it to the headphone specific threads instead of the Argon one.
