Anyone know if an iFi Zen DAC is enough? I already have one, but I’m planning on getting a Zen CAN if it isn’t enough. I’ll also have to wait a couple of months to get in line, then wait a few more months to actually get it. Lol.
You’ll need at least the tr60 balanced and the corresponding cables for the zen DAC otherwise I would recommend a more powerful amp than the zen DAC
Thanks. I found Audio Science Reviews and decided to get the Topping A50s and D50s and sell my iFi Zen DAC locally.
Do the Argons get hot to the ears? My room temps range from 25-33 degrees C (77-91 F).
They didn’t bother me in our hot muggy summer, but it was just July and August. They recommend the Oval suedes and that’s what I went with. Feel like two little pillows on my ears.
Which reminds me, I really gotta get these back on my head.
She is thiiiccc boi
T60 argon with cowhides seems the most warm dark and most controlled out of all of them if you want a different flavor
Yeah I might pad roll at some point. The suede has been pretty good, though I find they get a little uncomfortable after a couple hours due to the thickness of the pads. Cowhide might be good to try if they are a little thinner
I was initially confident upgrading my Magni 2 and Modi 3 to Asgard 3/Modius, but the asgard 3 was faulty 4 times in a row and I’ve sent them back for a return. Eating a 15% hit to the cost and $35 shipping back.
I’ve ordered the Sp200/m200 just to test it out to see the difference between the magni 2, but I’m thinking I’ll likely just sit back and make do with the magni 2 unless it really struggles with the T60 RP argon.
They take SO well to bass boost! I have to get back on to these soon.
May not be the best comparison since their sound signatures are pretty different, but how do they compare to focal elex? Deciding which pair to get between the 2.
I would go with the Elex as I find that a more complete headphone. As stated elsewhere, they are very W-shaped and give you lots of treble, mids and bass in a great combination. To me, the T60 Argon’s more of a bass thing with good mids.
If I was on a tear of listening to clean, clear music such as Florence and the Machine, Tears for Fears, Steely Dan, etc., I grab the Elex’s.
I grab the Argons, less frequently, when I want to listen to some loud, fun, bassy music.
Of course there is a large price difference. My Elex’s cost me about $1K, landed in Canada. The Argons total was about $660.00, in Canuck bucks.
Just to follow up on my previous post, I decided to put on the T60 Argons today. Wow, did they sound good!
Pretty clear and lots of fun. Doesn’t have the fullness of the Elex’s and HE6se V2’s, but they are are a different kind of fun.
These take to bass boost SO well. I was drifting through my collection and enjoying the bassier stuff even more.
As I was going alphabetically, I ran into Bob Moses. He is know for electronica and dance music. I have two of his songs, Tearing Me Up (2015) and Heaven Only Knows (2018). Both are pretty long at 7:50 and 6:35 respectively.
The Argons with the iFi and bass boost sound awesome on these tracks! I got curious and pulled out my Cascades and did a head to head except, that I had to drop the power to low gain and the bass boost down to 20hz. The Cascade just doesn’t sound as clean and punchy. Lots of bass, but it’s not as clear.
These Argons certainly have their own little niche. They do need AND love bass boost though, IMO.
Nice to look back at a cheaper set and go, “Yeah, I think I’ll be keeping these.”
Then right into some Bob Seger. Nice way to spend a rainy Thursday.
@ShaneD I’m really curious about your recommendations for an Amp/Dac around the $400-$600 price point. Can stretch it if worth.
I ended up going through five Asgard 3/Modius combos before eating $100 on the return due to them all being DOA.
I’ll be getting my T60 Argons in the next week and i’ll be running them off of a Magni 2 and Modi 3.
Love your impressions so far.
My favourite amp in that price category is the Monoprice Liquid Platinum. I got mine on sale for $599.00 last year. There will definitely be sales on Black Friday through Boxing Day.
For my T60 Argons I Love my iFi Pro iCAN, but it is stupid expensive. I bought mine used and it still the most expensive headfi item I ever bought.
I don’t find these Argons very bassy, but MAN do they take to bass boost! I wonder if any of the cheaper iFi’s could power them? Might be worth looking into.
If I didn’t have the Pro iCAN, I would be using my Schiit Loki with my LP and grinning from ear to ear.
On the downside with the LP, it has so much gain that IEM’s and very efficient headphones are not a great match. Think Grado’s, Cascades and Meze 99’s.
PS: Thanks for the compliment! I just try to help with my limited knowledge. All I can really do is relate my experiences.
Ah, I suppose I’d also need to find a balanced dac to run with it,
Since the Asgard 3 issues i want to see how much my Magni 2 struggles.
I’ve been eyeing the SMSL Lineup like the SH-9 or something.
With the LP balanced and non balanced inputs are treated equally. To get the very best sound out of it, you need a balanced headphone cable.
I used to have an SMSL SP200, but was not impressed.
Hm, The Liquid Platinum is tempting, but I’d have to get a new DAC for it and that goes way out of my budget.
Seriously tempted though. Kinda hoping I can find the Magni 2 satisfying enough as I don’t see a lot of good clear upgrade options for $600-ish (for dac+amp)
You can definitely use the modi 3 with the Liquid Platinum since it has both single ended and balanced inputs. With the LP however, the balanced headphone output is significantly better than the single ended headphone out.
Any recommendations for a balanced DAC with the LP?
I could upgrade to the balanced option after doing some overtime.
