My introduction to hifi

You will be paying a pretty penny for them lol

I don’t get what is with a bunch of vendors who sell cables always having balanced 2.5mm and 4.4mm for instance, but almost always just have 3.5mm trs and not 3.5mm trrs.

3.5 trrs is very uncommon. ifi used it for a while but it never cought on. 2.5 trrs is like legacy standard now since it is just suck a small and fragile connector. 4.4 pentacon is the the new standard and what you most likely see in any portable device that has balanced since it is distinct from 3.5 (so no confusion of what port does what) and far more robust than 2.5.

3.5 trrs has usually been for headphones/ear buds with an inline microphone, which is not to be confused for a balanced audio cable.

You will see 3.5mm trrs cables for use with phones and communication. It is not commonly used as a balanced audio cable, probably so the average user doesn’t mix that up. It has completely different wiring, or “pin out”.

Are there people who can paint your headphones? Is that how someone got their HD58X to be black and white?

Zeos made a video showing how he painted his 600. Doesn’t seem too difficult but definitely a commitment.

There are a few companies that offer custom airbrushing etc like…

Is there a way to make my pc use the off board dac when I’m just playing something through my pc’s speakers?

Not really no, and even if you could you most likely wouldn’t be able to tell the difference if it was through a laptop speaker or something

I feel like I might be trying to over exaggerate how obvious forward and behind is and I should maybe try to focus on it more. There is such a thing as spatial awareness deafness, but It doesn’t sound like it has anything to do with me as apparently it makes it hard to hear speech with background noise. I feel like I need to run some kind of real world test, because I’m not sure how obvious forward and behind really is for me in real life. Wouldn’t it be safe to assume though, that with the way our ears are placed on our head that it would be easier to discern left and right than forward and behind? I almost feel as if I should be studying sound, how our ears hear sound, and how sound interacts with the environment now. (Such as bats on the latter when they judge where something is in the environment based upon the interaction of the sound they emit and how it interacts with their surroundings.) The latter makes me wonder about room acoustics and if or how you might be able to tell what kind of room someone is playing in when listening to music and how it sounds different if they’re playing outside with no walls for sound to bounce off of. I couldn’t even imagine what it might be like if somehow, someone, could hear like a bat to picture where everything is in the room space, BUT, also know what that object is and tell you what make and model of guitar or amp they’re using in that room. Maybe even tell the height of the people in the room or whether they’re sitting or standing. Imagine if they’re guitar had a giant cosmetic defect and by knowing how sounds interact with the environment, you could picture it. One that is actually realistic in my mind though, is clothing. Have any of you been able to hear someone’s clothing in a recording before and maybe be able to tell what they’re wearing or what kind of fabric it is based off of that? I wonder if there are any cases of blind people gaining really good listening skills they can use when listening to music.

I’m logged into my account on my phone but not my pc and apparently I can’t remember my password and I can’t get into my email to reset it. :pensive:

Oh man, that took me like 10 minutes but I managed to guess my own password xD

I think you need to step back and chill. Imaging and soundstage are things you need to kind of learn how to hear. When I first got into this hobby I literally couldn’t hear soundstage. Now that I’ve tried a few headphones and directly experienced one of those headphones gaining soundstage with a pad swap I now know what to listen for to recognize soundstage. Like I think @M0N already said, yosi horikawa is good for imaging. Maybe try listening to some of his stuff on some crappy headphones then try with your Elex and see if you notice the difference.

I guess the way my mind was trying to imagine it when reading everything was as if somehow it was going to sound as if you weren’t even wearing headphones and just as if you were in the room with them, but that’s probably not even possible with headphones I’m guessing.

Hmm, maybe that’s an unrealistic expectation. I have heard people describe headphones that way but it seems like a very subjective feeling that would vary from person to person. To me, the physical weight and feel of the cans keep me from completely feeling as if I’m immersed in a room. Maybe you want that big space feel that headphones 3 times the price of the elex can offer but not sure if you will be satisfied with that either. I would say try to demo them to see if that’s the sound you’re looking for. As for the Elex, I’m listening to Yosi Horikawa right now and I can definitely tell the 3D-like sound from all directions but it’s still more intimate than something like a HD800 or high end Hifiman if you’re looking for BIG soundstage.

I think I did have unrealistic expectations. I am enjoying these headphones quite a bit though. I think maybe I’m just trying to bring myself back down and ground myself in reality atm.

Headphones always sound like headphones.
Spatial presentation, sound in front of and behind comes from the way sound hits your ears and is occluded by your Head. It’s possible to encode this into a recording for headphones, but the same recording wouldn’t sound good on speakers.
Various headphones to certain degrees will present the elements of a recording differently in space, wider, taller, more clear separation, or with more precise positioning, but they still sound like headphones.
The one exception to this might be the RAAL’s, since they are positioned differently relative to the ears.

This spatial presentation is why I will always prefer a good pair of speakers in a well setup room to headphones, but the former is hard to come by and the latter is extremely convenient, and just a different experience.

Even with speakers, near field listening always sounds like near field listening.

I prefer both headphones and speakers and iems, you just have to realize they give you a different experience and enjoy them for the experiences you get

Any headphones exist where the cups sort of curve around to the front and back of your head a little?
