In my quest for good closed backs that could travel well, I tried these and returned them. Then tried several others in the same range, and bought these again.
These are really great cans. everything everyone else has said, in terms of detail, and if they do have a bit of a bass boost I donât mind. Fantastic build quality, good isolation for travel, and look fine to non audiophiles.
I got these 7/24 but unfortunately I returned them 7/26. The comfort was the deal breaker and 10 mins in I wanted to take them off. I tried to make these love me. I tried to stretch the circle pads a bit, I tried tucking my upper and lower ear lobes in better, and finally I just tried to make myself tough it out and get used to them. Less than an hour in I was focusing less on the music and more on my ears. This was a letdown because I have small ears and thought they would fit in the pads better but the clamp on my ear is maddening. A good simulation of the feeling is very lightly touch the top of your ear with your index finger and the lower lobe with your thumb, bring the fingers together with the pressure you would use to pick up an empty soda can and finally press into the head with pressure of a broken in HD600. That gets annoying and it gets warm fairly quickly but not as warm as the feeling of your fingers touching your ears. I liked the sound and they sounded like some of the best studio monitors Iâve ever heard and thatâs the problem. I got all this detail with little impact and the headphone lacked a musical quality that my closed back Focal Elegia and higher cost Eikon have. If the Neumann was comfortable I would have kept it as an endgame monitor but I couldnât get past the poor comfort.
I can understand it. I used it for 2 weeks without setting the headband to a higher size⌠It was a torture. I have a big head and I am a tall thin person⌠noticed the head size when I was skiing in my 10th grade I think. I extended the band to its max now it works fine. I should have like 400h of use.
The ear pad thing is different to velour imo. The MDH like to press on the ear like an on-ear headphone to produce the awsome sound / sealing the ear. I cant even listen to the Jubilees (only music - games are fine) because I am so spoiled by its sound
It seems that comfort is a deal breaker for some and a non issue for others. Ear size seems the limiting factor. My ears fit (with no extra room to spare). If they were just a touch bigger i would be uncomfortable as well.
Itâs said that the cartilage in the ears grow continuously your whole life. So at some point my ears will outgrow these cans. Check back with me in 10 or 15 or so years of youâre interested in buying a used set!!
I also agree that the ndh20s have too much bass if you want to call them neutral. It can be eqâd out if needed, but itâs a little too much if you are trying to mix/master imo
Yeah, itâs elevated tastefully I would say but likewise, I wouldnât use them for production work. Speaking of which, Iâm not actually sure I have ever come across a closed-back headphone worthy of the title of being neutral except the HP-50 from NAD.
I think the elegia is the best closed back for mixing/mastering Iâve heard, so I had to get one. It can be eqâd to perfection (neutralness in this usage case) or sounds natural enough to be used without
Edit: but I think the ndh20 is a bit more enjoyable for non mixing/mastering related listening
I do a bit of mastering on the side. Its more what I prefer and am used to. I feel that the ndh20 is definitely good for mixing, but tend to find that my masters come out better on something really flat. Itâs definitely I would recommend because itâs great performance for the price. I just donât feel the need to have one because of what I already own and how I prefer to work
I prefer to use the clear (got the professional version but itâs just different colored pads), and itâs my personal standard for a neutral headphone. I also use an ether c flow 1.1 for checking for some errors, since it tends to emphasize some flaws that most people wonât hear, but itâs good to know that I corrected them. I used to use a 600, still do from time to time. The elegia is pretty close to the clear imo, and works great. I use it if I need some isolation, but usually I prefer open. I test the final on everything else I own (headphones, speakers, and on a couple of friends car systems)
Lot of talk about the use of the NDH 20 for mixing⌠how about for just listening enjoyment as compared to other closed-backs?
So far I am really enjoying the isolation and sound quality, but I am always on the lookout for the perfect closed-back for music. Just want to know if I am missing out⌠though itâs very subjective of course.
I bought mine to use as a tool, and theyâre great for what I use them for. To me, theyâre a little boring for music. I always pick Ananda, Blue, 6XX, or 4XX before these when itâs time to relax and enjoy some music. If the time comes to buy a closed back for music, 1770 is at the top of my list.
