🔷 Neumann NDH20

Had a listening Sessions at munich high end 2019.
I was a bit dissappointed. Not that wide soundstage and to flat. And I prefer flat!
The Adam Audio SP 5 is a collaboration with ultrasone.
Slightly more musically tuned. More modern tricks for better soundstage.
HEDD Audio on the other hand is an ex adam Audio engineer… they had a 2k prototyp… very heavy and very interesting sound like a mix between stax and something strange. But not bad at all

Ultrasone is 30km away from munich(hometown) - they invited me to come by. And perhaps I come and buy if the other closed back pro model is more musical and has a better soundstage

any updates on cables that will work with NDH20??? the stock cables are the only issue i have with these … and the pads could be a bit deeper

Do you thinking changing pads would be a negative on these? I like the signature but wouldn’t want them to change for the worse in case they wear down throughout the years

I was supposed to receive these today, but even though they have made it to my city, there was a delay in delivery and I won’t have them today. I’m going to assume the mailman is currently enjoying them.

Someone try this song on these headphones and let me know how it sounds haha. Preferably you can download it or listen to it somewhere with less compression than youtube, but if not its still very nice

Can anyone check if replacement cables for the Sennheiser HD6 Mix, HD7 DJ, HD8 DJ work with these Neumann headphones? They look exactly like the two cables that come in the box:

On eBay you can find them in 1.2 m, 1.5 m, 1.8 m, 2.5 m and 3 m length.

Im going to give one of these a shot. Look like the closest thing.

I had a four hour gaming session on these last night and my only issue is that they hurt. They physically hurt where they contact my ears.

I think it depends on ear size since I normally game 2 to 4 hours straight and had slight discomfort under the ear on the upper jaw

Agreed, I wish these had DT1990 earpads that would be rad; but, these may be too expensive to put up with the discomfort. I will continue to evaluate.

Brace yourself, a new player joined the church of Neumann.

I’m a total noob, switching from a Beyerdynamic MMX 300 from 5 years ago. I was torn between HD660S,DT1990 or Focal Elex for more than 3 months. But Z’s review made me go “fuck off lets go closed back again”.

First impressions are AMAZING for what its worth (Grace SDAC-JDS Atom). Using them for more than one hour no pain at all, will comment once used for longer period. And I have quite big ears (I’m 198cm or 6’5’’ for imperials). I allready have the Brainwavz XL replacement in case of need.

Next step will most likely be a Monolith THX in a few months. Or maybe a DarkVoice to tube them ? Oh god what have I done… (also 3 IEM in their ways)

Been testing the NDH20 for the last hour. Have mixed feelings about them so far. They have great detail but everything sounds like it has veil over them (dark? muffled?). It has plenty of bass but its extension seems to be excessive (listen to some male speaking voices). Hits all the highs it needs without being harsh but has no sparkle to them. These headphones sound very clinical with a exaggerated bass.

I understand that these are suppose to be monitor headphones but how to do explain the bass?

I would be wary recommending these to people blindly, this is not a swiss army knife of headphones.

That bass you’re hearing for the first time is the bass that’s been missing on whatever gear you’ve been listening to. Welcome to neutrality. These are professional mastering headphones for a reason. Make sure you’re not EQing extra bass into these. No EQ necessary.

I believe you’ve got some Sendy Aiva’s? If you’re used to those, those have a very exaggerated upper mid range and boosted high frequencies. Give your ears time to adjust to these.

Sorry but no. The Bass is exaggerated. That is why i put in parentheses to listen to male speaking voice. You’ll hear the end of sound way too boomy. Unless God is speaking to me (not religious) in no way should it sound like that. I many headphones to compare it to. I did do a A/B with my Campfire Cascade which are bassy headphone and it doesn’t have this issue. The NDH20 clearly extends the bass and bleeding into the mids.

Before listening to these I have been mostly listening to my Campfire Solaris. All ran on a ADI-2 DAC and the Monolith THX Desktop amp.

The NDH20 doesn’t fall into a weird space between Pro monitors and Audiophile grade headphones. Not too musical but not too clinical.

Disagree. FYI… I do professional audio engineering as part of my job. Send your Neumann’s back and put the Aiva’s back on your head if that’s your thing.

Didn’t Zeos say “I trust these with my life for neutrality”, “these are the best closed cans in my building”?

Funny how you keep bringing up the Aiva like i put them on a pedestal. Where do you see anywhere i mention them like they are the 2nd coming of Christ (again not religious)? There is a time a place for them as well as NDH20. I don’t preach about them to anyone. My opinion on the Aiva is more of a warning to would be buyers. They have there pros and cons just like the NDH20.

Rather than posting your job occupation and quote from your All Mighty Savior, why not post something more constructive like your own opinion.

I ended up picking up the monolith THX AAA dac/amp. I probs would’ve opted for the massdrop 789 if it didn’t take months for it to ship but I said fuck it. God damn I really can’t imagine anything being much better than my monolith thx. At least considering it was ~$500 and has a great dac included. I’ve used the 650s for a couple years and decided to pick up the M1060Cs which are ok (not bad but uncomfortable and not as natural sounding vocals as the 650s) but I’m returning them and going for the NDH 20. It kinda seems like the NDH 20 keeps he neutrality and natural sound of Sennheiser but puts it in a closed back which sounds perfect for me.

To be fair, you can disagree all you want, but there are objective means to test these things. And by accounts of the tests, the bass is exaggerated and the mids are scooped. This is definitely not a neutral reference headphone.

Also, quoting Z when it comes to “technical” aspects of headphones probably isn’t the best thing to do. I’m assuming we all enjoy his reviews and value his opinion. However, he almost always goes by “his ears,” which is what people should do for their enjoyment but it’s an awful way to determine a reference headphone.

What are your favorite headphones? Do you like the Cascades? I got the Argons but they bleed into the mids a lot and are a bit shrill at 10khz. Do the cascades have good subbass but move into the mids more naturally?

They look neutral in regards to the Harman target.
