New 350$ Planars -Thieaudio Phantom

This is like IKEA of the headphone world…

Woah… why is this the first time I’m seeing this. Awesome!

Anybody taken these out?

Burn in, Pad change, Remove foam under pads and leave circular foam under grilles after removing the mesh that’s glued to them. Other than that, swap the garbage headband out

Oh yeah, and fuzzor mod, if you’re so inclined

Long, long ago. That was one of the first things we all did haha

That’s the one I was asking about!

Think I took the wrong ones out - I took out the circular ones :stuck_out_tongue:

Let us know how it improves! The more input the better

After reading about removing on this forum, I did, It seems to me to make a different.

Tube amps ,SOMETIMES don’t play nice with planar for some odd reason .If you have the means to try another amp do so and see if that makes a difference .

Yeah I’ve been using the EL AMP the whole time - Just tried the little dot to see what would happen.

It’s because an otl tube amp will have a higher output impedance and can effect the frequency response of headphones that need more current in lower impedance ranges. It won’t necessarily harm the amp or the headphones, it just might not sound right or sound off.

@ConnorG & @mico Definitely agree - Taking out the rectangular foam, changing the stock pads and removing the mesh sounds the best to my ears - By far!

Will give it some time with burn in.

But so far, not my cup of tea. Hopefully that changes…

Just waiting for a set of pads. Done all the mods that Connor suggestted and I’m loving them. Need more burn in time, but i’m sold.

If you go vert, just make sure speaker terminals don’t touch grille.
I had to bend one just a tad bit .

I have them them back in the little dot - Swopped the opamp with a MUSES 2. MUCH less muffled now.

Think these might play nicely on lively and bright amps and dacs.

on mine I moved the rectangle piece of foam and moved it behind the grill(got rid of the circle foam).

The rectangular piece of foam is the main culprit here for sure. I was also thinking of moving it to the back for a more even distribution of the foam - although they might be too thick.

This is actually an amazing piece of kit value for money wise - You can mod so many things to get exactly what you are looking for - even more if you have tubes (hybrid amp) and opamps to play with.

The pad change was the key for me to change the muffled sound.

Are we 100% sure the metal grills (after removing the mesh) don’t impact sound?

Connor has measurements to support that in his upcoming review I think
