New 350$ Planars -Thieaudio Phantom

$25 and under: Thrilled with purchase
$30 - $35: Would buy it but wouldn’t think anything either way (just shower and try to forget)
$40 - $50: Would not be happy with myself for buying (but I would anyway )

Gaming is pretty fun with them and I’ve also noticed that when I’m not listening to music (reddit, youtube, twitter, etc), I typically have to take off the Argons and I go to something lighter like the Porta Pros. With the Phantom I find myself not having to take them off and I enjoy listening to accuracy of the voices in the videos. Nice, unexpected element.

I meant to thank you for your updated assessment yesterday. First I’m glad you’re not as disappointed with them as you were initially. I was starting to question my own hearing. It’s also great for people like me who are newer to the hobby and haven’t heard the higher-end headphones to get this feedback. Much appreciated.

Do you have a link to your list of headphones (swore I saw it posted somewhere) or would you mind listing the three you place ahead of the Phantom (I’m keeping in mind your explanation that it’s not just a cut and dried answer and also that Grado RS2e is likely one of the three). It will give me a couple more to research for possible future purchases (although I’m hopeful the Phantom will last me for a little bit).

Thanks again!

Yeah when I switch off listen to music as well sometimes, tend to string instruments, just hits me out of nowhere and I’m like “Oh! Ok… Touche’”

I wonder if they even listened to the headphone before releasing it. It’s like just threw it together. It only sounds good after moding it. Too many different thoughts on this headphone.

The HD800 only sounded well with a specific tube amp… People still sucked its dick. Same could therefore be said to Sennheiser.

HD800 or the HD800s? I thought that the 800s did fairly well with most higher end amps

HD800. I think at least…

I could see that then, it was way too much on the treble if you had it on some amps

Glad I bought into this headphone actually… Love a good controversial piece of kit.

Why is this soldering job so trashy, I kinda just want to be able to hide it from myself.

Outside of that I like it even before modding. I removed all the foam and the sheet from the grill and def sounds better, until I get the right foam imma use it bare naked I don’t mind the piercing highs honestly.

Really cool. Thanks for sharing. I want them all.

labor probably low cost

As someone who owns both the Argons and Phantoms, how do you think they compare? I’ve got my next cans down to those two (or maybe Verum 1s or 1060Cs), but haven’t seen an explicit comparison. Do you have a clear favourite?

Hi all, trying out the poll feature here -
I’m going to design and 3D print various mods for the phantoms to potentially sell if there’s interest. If you’re interested in any of these things please check the box, I’d be curious to know!

  • diffusion grids, or ‘fazors’
  • grills
  • closed-back cups
  • something else? (reply or pm)

I got mine on Friday and throughout my extensive use of it for both music listening, gaming, and YouTube watching I can say that they sound great after I swapped the pads with the ZMF oval suedes. My only complaint at the moment is the headband as Conner had said earlier I think. Has anyone found a replacement that’s more comfortable yet? It seems like it wasn’t made with the heft of the drivers in mind. I saw that he also swapped it with the band off the m1060’s, but you can’t purchase the headband individually and I don’t want to spend an extra few hundred bucks on a headband.

@s_beck Its interesting that strings sounded the worst as a lot of people say that is the strength of the Phantoms, or i suppose planars in general. But I appreciate your feedback.

Makes me want to get the 6XX as well so I have a similar reference to 75% of the people out there. Sometimes it feels like im the only one without a 6XX, HD600 or HD650.

Keep it coming people!

@XyleFBB No matter what others say, what matters is that you are happy with what you are hearing! if you like the sound dont be bothered by what other people think about it;sound preference is personal.

It doesnt matter if its a $2000 pair that all the reviewers are raving about, in the end its you who are spending the money and listening to the music, right?
