🔷 Orchard Audio x Z Reviews | Valencia Headphone Power Amp

Valencia was brought into this world with purpose…

  • Be the world’s first dedicated Headphone Power Amplifier

  • Be one of the world’s cleanest measuring headphone amplifiers

  • Be one of the most powerful headphone amplifiers available today.

These were a few of the requests put forth when Orchard Audio teamed up with long time audio commentator Z Reviews before designing Valencia. We here at Orchard Audio are proud to present what we were able to achieve.

A refined class AB design able to accurately and effortlessly push any modern headphone from 16Ω to 600Ω inside an absolutely pitch black noise envelope. We minimized systems internal component counts and eliminated all complications to the signal path. You won’t find a Gain Selector, Secondary Inputs, or Volume Control on Valencia. It has become Purely a Power-Amp.

Measuring a Sinad of 118db, Valencia is the pinnacle of what a modern transparent amplifier should strive to attain. Never before has the final amplification stage of a headphone system been able to pass-through the signature of the source gear preceding it with so little interference. Audiophiles will often ask if an amplifier is warm, sibilant, or adds weight & depth to the Sound. Valencia strives to add nothing of the sort. No noise, No distortions, No Limitations.

A power-amp for headphones introduces some new challenges for audio enthusiasts. While a standard practice in high-end 2-channel systems, using a power-amp simply means you must control the volume gain via pre-amp or other means. Your choice of DAC, pre-amp, be it solid-state Class-A, or a tube, will greatly affect the sound of your headphones when running off of Valencia. Having 15 watts (@32Ω) of extremely clean power puts responsibility on the listener. Control of the input voltage to prevent possible damage to both a headphone and your hearing are required. With care, Valencia can run even the most sensitive IEMs in a black background if the Source Gear shares a near-Zero Noise Floor and precise control.

Valencia features a single set of Balanced XLR inputs on the rear and a single 4-pin XLR output on the front. A 4-pin XLR to 4.4 Pentaconn adapter is provided with every unit. Single-Ended connections (1/4" \ 6.35mm) are not supported by Valencia.

Optionally, you can use RCA to XLR adapters for the rear inputs, these will lower the potential output power of the amp which may benefit some users of more sensitive headphones. Alternatively, should your source be only RCA and you wish to use the full power of Valencia, Orchard Audio sells a Voltage Booster RCA to XLR adapter for this use case.

Additionally, a complete set of four speaker-style banana taps are located on the rear of the unit. These can be used for highly efficient speakers (95db/w) as Valencia supports as low as an 8 ohm load with a ~5 watt output maintaining the same inky black background that headphones enjoy. NOTE: These taps are active at the same time as the headphones jack so it is NOT recommended to use both simultaneously!

These taps can also be used with impedance adapter boxes [sold elsewhere] to give you a second output for easy to drive headphones and IEMs if desired.

A soft-off, white LED power button is located on the angled front fascia and a hard-off power supply switch is located above the 90 to 265 Volt AC input on the rear, making Valencia worldwide compliant directly out of the box.

Imagining how my SJY Audio headphones would sound powered by it.

This is really interesting headphone amp. I love their power amp, so I know I will most likely love their headphone amp. Curious since this requires a preamp, but is there any good solid-state preamp recommendation to go along with this? I already have a good tube preamp, but I wanted a solid-state preamp so I can use this if I don’t feel like burning tubes.

I know Z has some issues with power switch placement, but the Schiit Audio Saga 2 is possibly a good option. I guess we shall find out once the amp gets out into the wild.

I was looking into it and found the Topping Pre90 is a good choice. That preamp is also known to be transparent sounding, so it might be a really good option with the Valencia amp.

In my case I would most likely use my Mjolnir 3 on my desk as the preamp which is hooked up to a Yggdrasil MIB. Granted that I am not in the market for a new SS amp at the moment. This power amp does look tempting though, and I will be keeping an eye out for more information on it as it becomes available. Although, the above testimonial peaks my interest (maybe after a few more headphone purchases I will circle back around to this amp )

A70 Pro is a million times better than the Pre90. That new volume stage in the new Topping stuff is incredibly good and the A70 Pro has it and the Pre90 doesn’t. It’s a night and day difference.

Thanks! I will look into review videos for those. On paper, it does look a little more appealing in some areas with a plus being the cheaper price. What I really like is the low gain and high gain (it looks like it has those) which might be nice when running iem for the Valencia.

After doing some reading, the Topping A70 pro does seem like a really nice as a preamp. Do you own a Schiit Midgard? I currently own one and wonder how it compares as a preamp to Topping A70 pro. My only gripes with the Midgard as a preamp is that there is no remote which will be really nice if pairing a preamp with Orchard Audio Valencia. I also use the Schiit Midgard to power my power amp Schiit Rekkr that power my Tiny Radials speakers.

Literally a good part of the reason I bought one, I don’t have anything that I feel properly pushes my SN2. My old A90 comes the closest but still feels like it is not quite enough power.

I’m super excited for Valencia, especially for being able to turn my OTL tubes into basically hybrids so I can run planars.

My SN V1 first run is well controlled/powered by my MJ3, but that headphone does like extra headroom. So I can imagine them benefiting from a headphone power amp that has lots of power on tap.

Decided to strike up a conversation about the Valencia in a thread on another forum I frequent . I will report back if anything interesting comes up (quite a few of these guys have systems ranging $15k and up in that thread).
