Rant thread - share your grievances, not just audio

I hate it most when they put the bass in only one channel. Treble and even the mids are tolerable, but bass just creates this horrible unbalanced pressure effect for me.

Coltrane’s Giant Steps is such a good recording but man, I can’t listen to the whole album without frequent breaks. A squealing sax in one ear, only bass in the other.

i think i have an irrational fear of buying used because i have this weird thought that if i do i will end up messing up and buying something broken or something that was stolen or whatever… safety is hard with used and i am paranoid about a lot of things

so I just dipped my toe into reddit for the first time… No I’m not a boomer I’ve just never logged into reddit before and tended to not like their site format when browsing. The layout of threads and posts up/downed don’t really do it for me.

needless to say I tried the r/headphones/ area and JFC I think I’ve found a crowd that I disdain worse than ASR worse than the jagoffs at super best friend whatever place. Reddit is basically 100k millenials and gen z’ers taking emo photos while wearing their headphones and everybody circle jerking over the best ones.

examples:

Not sure why anybody would want to go back to that hell hole.

Judging from seeing what a community is like in one day.

The selfie posts only happened since yesterday for some reason, but in general Reddit format leads to shallow discussions, linking to forum posts and news, and other non-meaningful content. It’s not a proper forum, but more of a social media group, I think.

I find reddit good for some things but audio hasnt been one of them. Video games, men’s footwear, buy/sell for numerous hobbies. I prefer this place for good audio discussions as people seem more interested in learning and discussing than anything else.

Reddit “enthusiast” forums are just people posting pictures of their stuff. Not only in audio, but almost any hobby that involves buying some expensive thing.
Nobody goes there expecting elevated discussions going into technical depth, it happens sometimes, but it’s not the norm.
If you accept that, it’s fine.

Measurements

I know old hat, but hear me out!

Your typical Op-Amp from a name brand like Analog Devices, Texas Instruments, etc. comes with a couple of pages filled with measurements and the parameters under which those measurements were taken right next to them.

Example:
AD OP275

Has a couple of things, open-loop gain, common-mode rejection, output swing @ frequency, etc.
Important parameters when you want to pick an Op-Amp to fit your circuit.

And now you are telling me the only important one is this?

Because that is what FR-measurements boil down to. Ignore all the fine detail like overshoot, ignore all the time-domain stuff like transient response. Just provide a convenient oversimplified answer to a super complex problem!

And this is just “in a bubble”, completely ignoring that a headphone (or anything else) by itself will not produce any sound.

Is there a way you could make these pictures even smaller? Cause it’s bit hard to figure out what’s going on.
Or maybe crop bigger images or just link to material.

My small rant for the thread.

Can certainly reduce resolution if you like

Begins on page 4, the circled graph is “Closed Loop Gain vs Frequency”

I think i might be losing my hearing in the left ear, and i noticed it right around the time i got new headphones, first i blamed them, then i changed back to my old headphones and started blaming the amp, then i listened to another amp, and it was all the same, i got visit my doctor soon…

When your folks ask for a bit of help with a bill cause they’re a bit short, failing to tell you that they are litterally asking you the last fucking day to pay it, knowing you don’t get paid till the next day, and your car payment is due, but your phone has been off cause the phone company didn’t bother taking that payment out, so now you’re having to pay almost double what the bill you where asked to pay was supposed to be, and can’t fucking pay your phone bill, let alone put gas in your truck that’s got just under half a tank in it currently, and you still need to make a trip into town on Friday for a 3 FUCKING HOUR EXAM, and have enough gas to get you to the next paycheck when you’ve got just over $3 left… FUCK MY GOD DAMN LIFE RIGHT NOW!!!

Over the past few days I’ve found out that researching a new furnace sucks. The good news is that I’m doing it proactively just due to the age of my current unit. Still, just about every bit of information I’m coming across feels like “Slick Willie” level marketing-speak or just outright negativity about the whole process. I’m also getting the impression that a lot of residential HVAC contractors are about as trustworthy as the stereotypical used car salesman reputation from decades past.

Getting sick of trying to source a PS5 now, feels like I’ve been trying for ages, every time I get a stock alert they’re sold out before I can manage to get to payment.

Hopefully just a wax blockage. I’ve had a real problem with that for the last year or so.

I think it is, I’m gonna get it checked in a few days

i feel like i will never understand soundstage at all

people say the FH3 is a very wise soundstage headphone but it doesn’t feel like music is far away or upwards or down or anything… just that its like maybe a few centimeters around my head… that’s not really what everyone was implying with soundstage as a kind of headphone VR and I just don’t hear much differences…

I would not worry since what you wrote is pretty much the truth.
Getting the audio source more away, forward and to wider, get’s or set’s bigger soundstage.
Something literally in ear canal, cannot be that wide or much forward.
If the comparison is something like speakers that are across the room with in the triangle of happiness.

If the comparison is another IEM or headphones, it really is tiny or small movement.
Nothing is that sound just between the ears, if it’s bigger. It goes few centimeters away, maybe even around the head would be pretty wide soundstage.

RIP right part of my BLON BL03s, it can no longer emit sounds for no reason at all. For 2 years, you have been a good and fun set of IEMs to have while you were alive. I guess it’s time for me to get a new set of BL03s again.
