Yes, specifically the R10 bass heavy
Wait so bass heavy is literally in the model number?
So no, but the later versions that were fixed to address the lack of bass in the previous units was addressed
Ahhh okay, what was the time period these were being sold out of curiosity
I think 1989 but I donāt know when they stopped
Also I forgot to add that the tonality and organic sound is impressive
Can anyone tell me how the HD 280 Pro with 64 ohms sound connected to an OTL amp (like the Darkvoice Zeoās used in his review of these headphones). Z said the sound improved when used with an OTL? I have a Bottlehead crack, and Doc recommends to use at least 200 ohms cans.
Thanks.
Imo it will mess with it a ton. Personally I didnāt really think the 280 pro on a tube including the darkvoice was all that special tbh, personally preferred it on solid state. I havenāt tried it on a crack, but the crack has an output impedance of 120 ohms which will really fuck with the sound (mostly in a not positive way) of the 280 pro
I see, thank you for your input M0N
I think if you are interested in the headphones, they are good and perhaps worth a try (but I wouldnāt put too much stock into them on a tube personally). I would say if you donāt have one of the tried and true tube champs like a hd600 or 650/6xx or the dt880 600 ohm those might be worth picking up imo
The HD 600 perform nicely with the Bottlehead Crack, which I have currently own a pair. I am trying to find a pair of closed backed headphones that would pair well with the BH crack. The HD 280 Pro have such great ambient noise attenuation, and when I saw Z plug it into his Darkvoice I was
Ahhh gotcha. Well, hmm I can think of some closed backs that preform well on a tube but they are much more expensive than the 280 pro lol. I think it might be worth a try then, should be an easy return if you end up not liking them if you get from amazon or something
i have no experience with the 280 pros on a tube but ive been using them a ton on solid state and im honestly blown away for the $100 they cost. Kind of shocked they arenāt recommended more for price to performance. I have a hybrid tube here, but ive wanted to get 100% familiar with them on solid state before plugging them into the hybrid tube.
I got them specifically for a headphone to throw in my bag when i go to work or anywhere else, nice cheap set that if something happened to them i wouldnt be extremely upset. That was the original plan, but now i enjoy them so much i think i would be fairly upset if they broke. That being said, they are cheap enough that replacing them with a new set wouldnt be the end of the world.
I think for the price, they are very much worth a shot.
Just out of curiosity, what would happen to something like the Nighthawk Carbon or other biodynamics on the BH Crack tube amp?
It would be real strange, I have tried them on some of my otl tube amps and they do go nuts, the bass is just really screwed up, the presentation gets somewhat scrambled, and it just kinda sounds confused if that makes sense
Hmm okay so a no go then. I suppose a hybrid might work better then.
I would say so, or perhaps a transformer coupled tube amp with lower output impedance, but imo I think a hybrid or more colored solid state is my pick
Just got a pair of these in today because I was tired of having an AudioTechnica ATH_M50x as my only closed back.
So far from my minimal listening, they sound surprisingly detailed for $100. Everything seems to sound pretty well balanced and I think it will be a good monitoring can but I also think itās pretty enjoyable to just listen to on itās own. The downfall of them is they are really uncomfortable. I wear glasses so maybe it wonāt be as bad otherwise, but the clamp is extremely tight and the pads just generally arenāt the greatest. I might leave them to stretch out over night because it really is rough.
Other than the comfort complaint though, these are definitely worth the money Iād say. Not sure if pad swapping with drastically change the sound signature, but I am assuming it probably will. I picked them up for $80 so I really canāt complain much.
yeah i left them to sgtretch out a bit on my desk speakers and the clamp loosened up a decent amount where they no longer bother me. I also want to try some different pads on mine strictly because of the material used on the stock pads.
Yeah I think I will stretch them overnight and see if that helps, but I donāt want to loosen the clamp too much. I did an overnight with my M50x and it helped a lot, so I will probably do the same for these.
I am curious if anyone has pad swapped these. I feel like it would change the sound too much, but I also have no idea because I donāt have extra pads laying around haha.
same here, im not sure what pads would fit on them nicely
