đŸ”¶ Sennheiser HD58x Jubilee

Was listening to these again the other day after extensive listening with the Phantoms and DT1990s and I immediately noticed grain on them. Its gone away now. Was I imagining it or are these headphones ever so slightly grainy?

They got treble. Treble above 10khz. Neutral/natural treble extending all the way to 20khz+ and more. Something basically no headphones have. So it will sound “grainy” if the seal isn’t perfect, if the headphones aren’t tight enough on your head.

Leave them on a yoga block for 4 hours and you’ll never hear the grain again. 8 hours and they’ll sound “tubey”. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well it’s probably because you were listing to the 1990 which is more detailed in that area and then going to something less resolving

So does less resolving = grain or is that too much of a stretch?

I’m now tempted to see what the 6XX sound like.

It depends, because the term grain can mean different things to different people

I think at some point there was a discussion about this on here at one point but I can’t find it

Why can’t audio just be simple

Because subjectivism lol

Lol it was even in this thread

I’ve gone and like now
 Lol.

Also - Threads repeat themselves every x number of posts. That’s rule 7 of the internet.

You can’t talk about the 58x and grain without a mention of metal751, rule #157

Rule #751 : HD58Xs has grain.

(No, it doesn’t) :stuck_out_tongue:

My opinion about the grain thing.

This is grain. This is stock HD58Xs with a bad seal. Extend the left and right metal parts of the headband, twist these so they tighten more. And if you still hear grain, leave these on a yoga block for 4 hours.

This is the result. This is what HD580s sounded like years ago, and what HD58Xs should sound like. No possible grain when the treble is as perfect as this.

Also, notice the numbers at the right of this last graph. 20khz. 30khz! Impressive treble extension from 5khz to 20khz.

Those are different graphs from different sources, so not really an accurate comparison. Also what do you point to as being grain

Ah, m0n ami! Since it seems LeDechaine is unfortunately not with us at the moment allow me to venture a response. This he can correct when he returns.

Let us assume that the jaggies on the right past 5 kHz in the top graph are grainy and the same area in the bottom graph are relatively less grainy. I believe M. LeDechaine is offering the bottom graph as a visual illustration of what his ears are telling him has changed and does not intend it to be taken as literal truth.

Ahhh ok my bad then, was just confused for a sec

Also I wonder if he was talking about the 580 Jubilee or the 580 Precision

Yeah, that’s it.

Also, treble (especially 15khz and above!) alone at sufficiently (too) high volume is always grain, lol. Crank the volume on any track with no bass with any headphones and all you’ll get will be harshness. My HD58X went from “sandpaper sounding” to “tubey goodness” after headband/pad adjusrments.

What did you do to the pads and headband again? Also yeah seal is important for some headphones lol

Also twisted the headband (left/right metal parts) a bit because they were too wide for my head.

I feel like most people throw their money away and don’t even do that
I don’t get it. It’s like buying great speakers, putting them on a table and saying “nope, they suck”. I mean, move them, place them, put them at an angle using a book or something before selling perfect, but not perfectly aligned to your ears, speakers
 and headphones.

Ah, ok gotcha. All I felt I had to do was reduce the clamp and everything else was fine

These are currently my main headphones which I bought like a year ago+ ago as an upgrade to my hd 598 (the old beige ones).

I was immediately surprised because pretty much everything was a noticeable upgrade with the exception of soundstage
except these gets better imaging because of it and I realised I was completely happy with this trade-off. It’s also interesting because I paid the 598 more than the 58x when I bought them. I even recommended them to a streamer I know who happened to have the same 598 than me and the only complain they had was the clamp, but they got over it considering how much better than sounded.

The way I would describe them (subjectively at least) compared to the 598 is the bass comes up a lot more, but it is still very controlled so I found it more pleasing. The BIGGEST upgrade however was the imaging and the treble. I never realised the treble was so
high (not harsh
but def higher than optimal comfort) on the 598 until I tried the 58x. It was to the point where I could instantly notice a huge difference, night and day basically.

For the imaging, this was overall very noticeable, but on some OST (I primarily listen to VGM), it was shocking. The main one was the Earthbound OST (it’s a snes rpg game, would recommend btw) which for some reasons I felt the songs were much more
intimate. It’s a strange feeling because the 598 felt very wide due to the soundstage while the 58x felt closer, but much more precise.

So I would definitely recommend them. Not sure if I will need to upgrade them at some point (I got a fulltime job since I bought them), but for now, I am pretty pleased by them
