i just thought they didn’t sell these individually

Easiest mod ever? More soundstage (just remove the foam).

After using only my T50RPs for weeks, I tried my HD58Xs again. Oddly enough, it sounded like they got less soundstage than my closed-back T50RPs with “shoulder-wide” soundstage. So, with pictures, here’s how to add soundstage to your HD58Xs.

Step 1: Find a knife or something similar, locate the little separation, open (someone did it with their fingernails but oh god I don’t recommend that – guitar picks maybe?).

Step 2: Remove the foam.

Now you can listen to music like that and see (
hear) what you prefer. Graphs show it does not change anything to the frequency response anyway. It will just add soundstage
 and instrument separation, maybe.

Just, play music and block the hole with your fingers and you will know why removing the foam can make a difference.

Step 3: It just clicks back in place.

That’s it! If you like the result, as a bonus, you now have two pieces of foam for your future audiophile experiments.

Also, now, you can just put your fingers on the grills, and hear the difference the foam (or lack of foam) makes – and why. Now you got really open-back headphones!
(And yeah, actually, T50RPs are technically semi-open. Why? Because there’s a one square centimeter grill. And that’s also one of the reasons why they don’t sound closed/muffled.)

Also, funny shit: I found an old thread on Reddit, people were arguing “it changes nothing, it’s just placebo, FR graph is the same, audiofool” – And I’m thinking: Yeah
could you tell me where soundstage is on a frequency response graph? )

Enjoy! :headphones:

I would recommend doing the felt mod on the drivers where you take a piece of felt or foam and double sided tape to put over the hole on the driver to prevent dust or hair getting in. One of the purposes of The foam on the chassis is to act like a filter

Wouldn’t it do the exact opposite and remove all the soundstage? lol.
Just don’t do it if you’re worried about dust, IMO.

I personally didn’t notice any difference with or without foam so I leave it in to keep dust out and hide my ugly TP mod. I also don’t really care about soundstage as much as many others so maybe that’s why I don’t notice any difference.

Also the mod @RiceGuru described would affect the frequency response but not the possible added soundstage as it ONLY coveres the hole in the magnet and not the entire back of the headphones like the stock foam (I did this mod but with TP, not foam/felt). Since it’s a porouse material it’s not like covering the hike with your finger as air can still move, just less than without the mod. It lessens the bass which I find makes dekoni elite velour pads sound like stock.

I honestly hate that the first thing people do is remove foam from open back headphones. That foam is protecting your drivers. Too much risk versus the gain in soundstage imo.

It’s not really a gain in soundstage, it’s more a gain in physical openness

I understand
I just don’t like the risk for minimal gains
especially considering my luck, lol.

Yeah that’s the only reason why I did this. Spent some time A/B-ing, testing, left ear with foam and right without and vice-versa. Confirmed added soundstage and possibly better instrument separation.

Oh, right. I might just
cut a round piece of this foam and stick it there (blu-tac, glue, whatever).

Is it that risky? I honestly don’t know.

It is much more risky with a planar magnetic, but still risky
especially with my luck, lol

Even more risky with estats lol, very risky

Are you the one who stuck a screwdriver inside his T50RPs? :stuck_out_tongue:

No, I’m the one that had 2 schiit fires in the past and 3 hifiman qc/build issue failures, lol

Once I purchased a power conditioner though, I have had 0 issues. Knock on wood, my Bifrost 2 has been going strong for almost a month now.

Hifiman though
I believe I’m on Dr. Fang’s blacklist somewhere, lol.

You’re right, by the way. It’s subtle. Definitely doesn’t make it sound twice as wide. 10% more maybe. No difference on soundstage on some songs even, probably. But you hear the sound is
“free”. Therefore it’s a really subtle thing
that totally removes the impression your head is “in a bowling ball” when the soundstage on some songs is not enough. I’m not going back.

P.S.: No, HD58Xs are not “claustrophobic” by any means, with or without the foams
 they’re open-backs dang it! :stuck_out_tongue:
