USPS delivered my tape pros at 5:47AM this morning. I guess theyāre starting really early in my neighborhood now.
First impression, pretty cool accessory set, I really like the cable.
Unfortunately the sound doesnāt match my current music preferences. Off my BTR5, thereās really nice bass quantity, and vocals are totally acceptable, but something is a little lacking in the mid instrument ranges compared to what Iām used to, like the L3/L5. String plucks donāt sound particularly special to me. I donāt know how to explain, coherently but it kinda sounds like if instruments could have a sinus infection, itās just not natural enough for my liking. I donāt see myself using this set super often which is disappointing.
I think this set bangs out on EDM and Rap, Run the Jewels actually caves my skull in the best way possible though. So far, one of my favorite tracks to play through this set is Dead, by Sakuzyo.
I donāt really believe that burn in will make me like this set significantly more. Itās likely that Iāll find more and more tracks that I like on this set, but I donāt think this will overtake my Thie/Moondrop preferences.
*Edit: Swapped default filter off. The default black filter has a rubber or foam dampener while the red filter has a through hole with some mesh I think. I canāt be super sure because I donāt have my glasses on. Iāve started to strip the screws on these plugs because of being virtually blind. I think I prefer the red plug instead of the black one. I might be insane but I think it takes away a little bass but fixes some of the nasally mids.
Before, the TP reminded me of sitting next to the huge loudspeakers in my high school gym, but swapping the filters was more like sitting in the front row of the Yamaha tuned speakers in my high school auditorium. Fits my personal library preferences more, but still doesnāt dethrone my favorite set right now.
AB testing with filter swapped TP against the L5, L5 brought me to tears again. L5 sounds more natural so I guess itās more immersive on some tracks (I crumbled down on Mineva by Hiroyuki Sawano). Iām not here to slay the TP though. I think thereās plenty of reasons to pick up the TP over something like the L3 or the Starfield. The ability to adjust/tune the most aggressive aspect of the TP is such a good tool.
