I am not the biggest fan of the Meze 109 Pro - even i was at the first place.
Somehow i do not like the treble. Like they ramp up to quickly and get annoying easily. They are up for sale.
Well, the A30 Pro does offer quite a lot of power. 2x6W@16Ohm
Sure, the Soloist will be a better choice. Here in Europe the cheapest price i can find is 1350€ - nothing i am willing to effort (at the moment).
I didn’t mean the Soloist, but class A amps in general. Class A amps are always on so they have instant power provided to the headphone, but they also use a lot more power than class D and class A/B amps. Topping amps normally fall under Class D and are over all more power efficient. There are other class A amps out there that are below $1,000 now and depending on the brand might be found for sub 1,000 euros as well. So I would shop around prior to pulling the trigger if/when you are ready to upgrade. The issue with powering Moonlight is not just power, my 2 x Gjallarhorns (class A/B) are supplying between 10 and 30 watts of power per channel into Moonlight. The overall design of the Amp Class, layout, and component choices all play a factor.
- Jut hooked up the stock Moonlight cable, and running Moonlight single ended off of the Soloist @ 4w per channel into 16 ohms I am still getting similar sound quality to going off the balanced connection which is double that. So more watts won’t make a huge difference with them past a certain point, and then it just comes down to amp design. 2.5 watts per channel and up will do the trick and that is why I will be picking up this 2.6 watt hybrid amp next year xDuoo TA20 Plus Balanced Tube Headphone Amplifier – Apos Audio
It sounds good on the TA-22
That was one of the amps I was looking at, but then they came out with the TA20 Plus. lol
I’m watching this amp. also in another forum i read just postive things.
Hmmm, TA-22 or TA-20 Plus…
Z basically said that he would pick the TA-20 Plus over the TA-22, but I would say it comes down to whether or not you need an DAC/Amp combo or not.
In my case I have a Bifrost 2/64, so that is why I will go with the TA-20 Plus.
I would go with the ta 20 plus
If you have an OTL amp using that as a pre amp to a class A takes these headphones to another level but it seems to do that with all planars I’ve tried it with.
This pairing might have made this one of my favorite pairs of planars.
So in my case you think it would be better to go with an OTL amp and switch my Soloist into power amp mode?
I like it more, on my singxer sa-1 I think investing in an otl even if for nothing more than a pre amp is a better investment than the ta-20 plus or ta-22 and can be much cheaper.
I have a Soloist for sale in Europe for €1000,- if thats something you are interested in.
I just got the e-mail confirming my Moonlight is on the way. Very curious!
Considering biting the bullet and saving up to go for a higher tier tube amp to drive Moonlight and the rest of my headphone collection. Woo Audio WA22 2nd Gen Fully-balanced Tube Headphone Amplifier – Headphones.com
I still have time to decide, but very tempting.
I picked up one of these
I have enjoyed it quite a bit. Had the ta-26 before this. Wa22 would be a beast though.
Nice amp! It will be a while before I pick up the WA22 2nd gen (unless I go with another option) as I have to save up some money first so I don’t throw it all on the credit card, lol. Hopefully sometime late next year. I will be keeping my Soloist 3XP and using the WA22 as a preamp for any headphones that struggle running strait out of the WA22. The Soloist 3XP sounds better in power amp mode anyway (IMO).
Once I have a tube amp on my desk I will have most bases covered: Tube Amp/Preamp, SS Headphone Power Amp, Mono Block Power Amps, and a “Good DAC”. The following year I will start building up a collection of Tubes to start Tube rolling to get things to my liking. I will of course spend time with the stock tubes to see what if anything I would like to change. It will be fun trying out Moonlight and Starry Night v1 on that setup.
Some early morning low volume listening streaming 24 bit / 192khz FLAC via AMHD, and I am defiantly liking it over the Arya for that use case. Running it off the Soloist 3XP in medium gain @ 20 to 45% volume (yes that is low for this headphone when listening to some tracks, lol).
Hi guys. I was wondering how much sound does leak from them? Why do I ask? Well T50rp Argons are semi open back but you can’t hear a thing outside of them. Sundaras or HD800 are open back and you can hear a lot. They’re quite noisy outside of the cups. ZMF atrium are open backs, but have some dumping in the cups significantly lowering the noise coming outside of the cups (so I heard). How do these do? Are they fully open as Sundars so you can hear it all, or not? Thanks
They do leak a considerable amount of sound, not as much as the Sundaras though.
Just finished my first listening session. I really like them a lot. They are relaxed to listen to, but have suprising amounts of detail and a nice soundstage. I agree with most others these are very neutral and good across the frequency spectrum.
Coming from the ZMF atrium, notes have less weight - are a little thinner, soundstage is smaller and all across the Moonlight sounds less big and smooth. Which ofcourse is no surprise comparing them to a headphone thats costs way more. I didnt really like the sound signature of the Atrium and really appreciate the Moonlight. Happy with my impulse purchase.
congrats, the color came out nice.
